(or. 131-184) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tobacco pipes and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner ashereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a novel meansfor cleaning the base portion of the stem which, as is well known is the portion which most frequently becomes clogged. Another very important object of the invenw tion is to provide a pipe. of the aforementioned character wherein the cleaning means constitutes a permanent part of said pipe. Other objects of the invention are to provide a pipe of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, dur-' able, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through a tobacco pipe constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Figure 3 is a view principally in vertical longitudinal section, showing the cleaning means in use.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen'that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises abowl I from the lower portion of which a stem 2 projects, said stem having extending longitudinally therethrough a smoke passage 3. Mounted on the stem 2 is a conventional bit 4.

Formed longitudinally in the upper portion of the stem 2 and communicating with. the smoke passage 3 is a groove or channel 5. Also formed longitudinally in the upper portion of thestem .2 and communicating with the groove or channel 5 is a comparativelyshort slot 6.

'Should the base portion of the stem- 2 become project into the lower portion of the bowl I. The member 1 may then'be returned to the groove or channel 5'and secured by tightening the thumb nut l0.

Itis believed that the many advantages of a tobacco pipe constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is: 1. A tobacco pipe comprising a stem having a smoke passage therein and further having a groove therein communicating with the smoke passage, said stem still further having a slot therein communicating with the groove, a' cleaning member slidable in the smoke passage and engageable in the groove when not in use, means operable in the slot for actuating the member and for securing said member in the groove when not in use, said means including a shank fixed on the member and rising therefrom, and a thumb nut threaded on said shank and engageable with the stem for securing the member in the groove.

2. A tobacco pipe comprising a stem having a smokepassage therein, said stem further having a longitudinal groove in the upperportion thereof communicating with the smoke passage, said stem still further having a longitudinal slot in the upper portion thereof communicating with Fig. 3 of the drawing, the member I is adapted to the groove, a cleaning member slidable in the smoke passage and engageable in the groove when not in use, a rib on said cleaning member engageable in the slot, a shank fixed on the cleaning member and operable in the slot, and a nut threaded on the shank and engageable with the stem for releasably securing the cleaning member in the groove, said nut and the shank also constituting means for actuating the cleaning member.
