Description

June 11, 1940. F, FERRARY 2,204,078
TOY
Filed Dec. 50, 1958 Fig. 5
INVENTOR FERCHNAND FFERRARY v BY J ATTORNEY Patented June 11, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOY Ferdinand F. Ferrary, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to J. Pressman & 00., Inc., Brooklyn, N. Y., a corporation of New York The invention relates to the game of quoits and hasparticular reference to the target or post employed in the pastime of ring quoits in that instead of tossing the ring loops toward and at a fixed object said target consists of a supporting base having disposed therein a movable target or stake whereat the rubber or rope rings are projected at such movable target or stake capable of movement in order to effect a more difficult game and one having vaster interest to the participants thereof.
The object of the invention lies in the providing of a target or stake for the game of ring 'quoits consisting of a stationary supporting base having mounted therein a stake-post aflixed thereto by a spring, attaching same to said base in order that the post portion becomes movable in all directions with relation to said base to effect a more elusive object at which the rings employed in the game may be projected.
In the following there is described the general embodiment of the invention the essential features thereof being more-clearly defined hereinafter in the claim.
In the drawing Figure l is a plan elevation of the quoit post-target; Figure 2 is a side elevation of the target structure showing the post portion thereof. in dotted lines the latter being one of the numerous portions assumed by said post when struck or contacted by the rings projected at it; Figure 3 is a cross sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 of the target-post and its means of aflixment to the base therefor; and Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of target structure disposed on the line 44 of Figure 3 of the drawing forming part hereof.
Similar numerals of. reference indicate similar and like parts throughout the several views of the drawing. 7 p
In the drawing l designates a supporting block or base having cut therein or otherwise formed therein an aperture 2 at or near its center thereof said aperture 3 being enlarged on the bottom side of said base I into a recess 3 and having driven into said base body a staple 4 to which one end of a tightly coiled spring 5 is attached the other end of said spring 5 being permanently attached to the end of post or target stakeo in aperture 1 and to said stake or post 6 by means of pin 8 driven into the body of said stake ii.
Said target or quoit stake 6 is rounded on its bottom end at 9 engaging the surface of. base I to permit of the easy rocking motion desired in the stake 6 when struck with or contacted by one of the quoit rings with which the game is played, the upper end of said stake 6 being formed into a double pyramidal head piece 10 in order to provide said target stake, with a suitable reception end thereof for catching the quoit rings when projected thereat.
The game of quoits as played with the new form of target stake as described herein varies greatly with the usual game of that name, since the structure as defined herein alters the object of throwing rings at a fixed stake and effects instead the act of throwing rings at apparently What is a fixed target, but what is in fact a moving and mobile target to further decrease the possibilities of making ringers in the game of indoor quoits.
It is obvious that the device may be varied in manifold ways without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A device of the character described comprising a supporting base member having cut therein an aperture, an anchoring staple mounted in said base and spanning said aperture, a single target pin having disposed in its lower end a coil spring attached to said anchoring staple arranged to permit the circumferential rotation of said target pin when struck with a quoit, said spring being adapted to reset and stop the movement of said pin after being encircled or struck by a quoit thrust at it.
