Description
June 11, 1940. w, s ENQCH 2,204,076
DISPLAY DEVICE Filed Oct. 26, 1939 Patented June 11, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to display devices, and pertains more particularly to decorative articles in the form of columns and pedestals used for window display and the like.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a construction which is inexpensive in manufacture, which is easy to assemble and disassemble, and which, when assembled, is firmly supported and unlikely to collapse.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a column embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the base of said column.
Figure 3 is a similar view, partly broken away, of a half-round column embodying my invention.
Figure dis a similar view of the base of said half round column.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, the column comprises a cylindrical member I, a top 2 and a base 3, all of said parts being preferably made of paper or cardboard or similar light weight, inexpensive material. The cylindrical member is preferably made in fluted or corrugated form for decorative purposes, as, for example, in the manner described in Patent No. 2,077,513.
The base of the full round column illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 is square and of suitable depth, and the top and bottom panels 4 and 5 are provided with apertures 6 and 1 respectively. The aperture 1 may be of any suitable shape, but the aperture 6 should be circular.
In cutting the panel 4 to form the aperture 6, part of the central portion of the panel is retained to form the tab 8 which extends outwardly in the plane of the panel 4 and is supported by a depending portion 9 and an inturned portion I0 secured to the bottom panel 5.
The tab 8 is alsoprovided with notches H and I2 extending inwardly from the side edges thereof. These notches engage the longitudinal edges of the cylindrical member and support the same firmly in the base in the manner indicated in Figure 2. The process of assembling the cylindrical member in the base is exceedingly simple, and is facilitated by the provision of the aperture 1, which enables the assembler to insert his hand to adjust the cylindrical member.
It will be observed that the longitudinal edges of the cylindrical member are spaced by the tab 8. This not only facilitates assembly, but also provides a space for the-insertion of background panels such as are commonly used in window displays.
It will be understood that the top 2, while not illustrated in detail in the drawing, is constructed in the same manner as the base, except that in some cases the aperture 1 is omitted in order to provide a fiat top panel.
In the half round column illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the base 3 is similar to that illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, except that the aperture 6 is only a semi-circle. The tab 8 is formed in substantially the same manner and the notches II and I2 engage and support the edges of the cylindrical member I" as before. In this form also it is unnecessary to provide the aperture I in the base as the wide space between the edges of the cylindrical member afford ample room for the hands.
It will be understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A display device comprising, in combination, a cylindrical member and a base therefor, said base being hollow and provided with an aperture in its top panel, a tab extending forwardly into said aperture, and notches formed in the sides of said tab to engage and hold the longitudinal edges of said cylindrical member.
2. A display device comprising, in combination, a cylindrical member and a, base therefor, said base being hollow and provided with an aperture in its top panel, a tab extending forwardly into said aperture, and notches formed in the sides of said tab'to engage and hold the longitudinal edges of said cylindrical member, said tab having a depending portion extending downwardly to the bottom panel of the base and supporting said tab.
3. A display device comprising, in combination, a cylindrical member and a base therefor, said base being hollow and provided with an aperture in its top panel, a tab extending forwardly into said'aperture, and notches formed in the sides of said tab to engage and hold the longitudinal edges of said cylindrical member, the ends of said notches being spaced so as to space the edges of said cylindrical member.
4. A display device comprising, in combination, a cylindrical member and a base therefor, said base being hollow and provided with apertures in its top and bottom panels, a tab extending forwardly into the aperture in said top panel, and notches formed in the sides of said tab to engage and hold the longitudinal edges of said cylindrical member.
