UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. KENDALL, OF GRESTON, IOIVA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,388, dated October 7, 1879; application filed October 18, 1877.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. KENDALL, of Oreston, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in portable washing apparatus, and consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a construction embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical horizontal sectional view.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents a rectangular or other suitably-shaped box, provided with a lid, 0., and seated on Wheels B and truck 0, having a tongue, D.
E is a furnace or fire-box located in the bottom, transverse center, and at one end of the box A, and provided with a door, 0, in one end of the box A, and a removable ash-box, e.
F is a series of pipes leading from the furnace E to the other end of the box A, and thence upward to a common discharge-flue, F.
G is a slat bottom, removably seated in the box A, a short distance above the furnace E; and H is a perforated casing surrounding the vertical parts of the pipes F.
The device may be operated in the house or out of doors, and may be readily and easily moved from place to place on its supportin gwheels.
The box A being filled with water up to or above the slat frame G, and the clothes to be cleansed being placed upon said slatframe, fire may be made in the furnace E, and the furnace casing and flues F, being in contact with the water, will heat it, and the lid abeing closed, the contained clothes may be subjected to any desired amount of boiling. When sufficien tly boiled, the clothes may be removed.
The furnace, being located in the middle of the box A, will heat the adjacent water, which, rising, will descend at the sides of the box, as shown by the arrows at Fig. 3, and thus deposit the sediment, so that several washings may be done without changing the Water.
The clothes being first removed, the slat bottom G may then be taken out, and the water being drawn off by any suitable spout, the sediment may be removed.
I am aware that a wash-boiler consisting of a box containing a removable furnace inclosed by a casing, a perforated shelf for the support of the clothes, and a perforated casing surrounding the smoke-stack has heretofore been used, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The portable boiler herein described, consisting of the box A, mounted on wheels, furnace E, having a water-space on three of its sides, series of bent pipes F, extending from the inner end of the furnace to the rear of the box, perforated casing H, surrounding the smoke-stack, removable slatted shelf G, and lid a, the whole constructed, arranged, and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. KENDALL.
Witnesses W. B. RICHARDS, THoMAs MGKEE.
