A portable top for open cars comprising upright supports, means for removably securing the supports to the upper edges of an open freight car, brackets at the upper ends of the supports, each of said brackets comprising a substantially U-shaped member, telescoping supporting bars resting on the brackets, said U-shaped members having aligning openings, and securing pins adapted to be extended through the openings in engagement with. the bars held therein, securing the bars within the U-shaped members, and a canvas covering adapted to be stretched over said bars.
