1 Claim.
are made from a. rather coarse knitted material.
These are bulky, and are not dressy, and therefore, are confined more or less to childrens wear.
An object of the present invention isv to provide a garment adapted for use in cold weather, which is preferably made of wool or some other suitable material having warmth, which may be slipped over the stockings and usual under garments of the wearer, and whose leg portions are so fashioned, that when the garment is on a figure, the exposed leg portions thereof will simulate full-fashioned hose, whereby the garment presents a very attractive and dressy appearance, and will not have the appearance of an ordinary slip-on garment.
A further object of the'invention is to provide a garment of the character disclosed, which is warm and light in weight, and which is so fashioned that the leg portions thereof will snugly fit the legs of the wearer in such a manner as to simulate stockings.
A further object is to provide a garment of the class described, which may be conveniently slipped on or off, which is not bulky and/or unsightly, when worn, and which when not in use,
may be folded into a small bundle whichmay be conveniently stored in. a small space as, for instance, an ordinary hand bag.
Features of the invention reside in. the unique formation of the leg portions of the garment whereby they will snugly fit the legs of the wearer and simulate full-fashioned hose; in the construction of the garment, as a whole, whereby the entire body and leg portions thereof are made from two similar blanks of material suitably stitched together; in the means provided at the bottoms of the leg portions of the garment and at the upper portion of the body thereof for retaining the garment in position upon the wearer; and in the provision of a garment of the class described whose use is not limited to any particular age range, but which may readily be worn by individuals of all ages as an added protection against cold.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description and accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claim. I
In the accompanying drawings there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out the various objects of the invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact features shown as various changes may be made within the scope of the claim which follows.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view showing the garment positioned on. a figure;
Figure 2 is a View showing the garmento-n a figure and illustrating its hose-like appearance on the legs of the wearer; v
Figure 3 is a front view of the garment as when laid out flat upon a table or flat surface;
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the rear of the garment;
Figure 5 is a side view of the garment showing the full-fashioned shaping of the leg portions thereof; and
Figure 6 is a View showing the blanks from which the garment is made.
The novel garment herein disclosed is shown comprising an upper body portion 2 having leg portions 3 open at their lower ends and provided with suitable straps 4 adapted to engage the bottoms of the feet, thereby to prevent the leg portions from creeping upwardly, and thus retaining them in proper position upon the legs of the wearer, as best illustrated in Figure 1. An elastic band is embodied in the upper portion of the garment, as shown at 5, and cooperates with the straps 4 to support the garment upon the body of the wearer.
An important feature of the present invention resides in the unique fashioning of the leg portions 3 of the garment. As best illustrated in Figure 6, the blanks 6 from which the garment is made, have leg portions 1, the opposite edges of which are outwardly curved or convexed so that when brought together and suitably united by stitching the legs of the garment will have the appearance of full-fashioned hose, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. This is brought about by the unique shape of the leg portions of the blank and whereby a seam is disposed at the back of each leg in the manner of full-fashioned hose.
The lower extremities of theleg portions of the blank are preferably formed as shown at 8 in Figure 6 to facilitate the formation of openings ment for receiving the feet and ankles of the wearer, as shown in Figure 1. The straps 4 provided at the bottoms of the legs fit around the bottoms of the feet or shoes and prevent the leg portions from creeping upwardly.
The garment is composed of two blanks of similar shape, made right and left hand. The leg portion of each blank has its outer upright edges outwardly curved, as shown at l2 in Figure 6. Each blank is also provided with an upwardly and outwardly projecting portion l3, which, in the finished garment, constitutes a portion of the crotch.
In constructing the garment, each leg portion is folded upon itself substantially along the dotted line A in Figure 6, whereby the outwardly curved edges l2 are brought together, and the outer edge In of the projection I3 is brought into registration with the curved edge I4 on the opposite side of the blank. These edges are then suitably secured together by a seam l5, which extends from the heel of each leg of the garment to the point B, shown in Figure 4. The two completed leg portions are then secured together by a single seam 16 extending downwardly from the top of the front of the garment and through the crotch and up the back to the waist band 5, as clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. It will thus be seen that the construction of the garment is greatly simplified by the unique shapes of the two blanks from which it is composed. Also, by thus constructing the garment, the use of inserts and other separable pieces in the construction thereof, is eliminated, and a garment is provided which is form-fitting and will be found very comfortable to the wearer.
The fashioning of the leg portions of the garment is an important feature, in that it gives to them. the appearance of a full-fashioned hose, when the garment is worn on the figure. By so constructing the leg portions, they present a very neat and dressy appearance and the garment is not conspicuous, as are the conventional slipon garments now on the market. The garment is made of a relatively light weight wool material which will offer maximum warmth, without bulkiness, and whereby the garment may be conveniently worn over the usual stockings and under clothing of the wearer, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The inherent stretchability of the material is such that it may readily be slipped on and off the figure without difficulty, and when on the figure, the leg portions thereof will be snug fitting so that they have the appearance of full-fashioned hose.
I claim as my invention: A form fitting tights type garment for wome and children comprising form-fitting trunks and form-fitting full fashioned leg portions integral with the trunks adapted to be worn as outer coverings for the legs and having the appearance and shape of full fashioned stockings, said garment being formed of two pieces of elastic fabric, each piece forming one half of the form-fitting trunks and being joined to the other piece in the trunk portion in medial front and rear seams which extend downwardly from the upper end of the garment and meet at the crotch, the fabric of each piece below the crotch being shaped as a complete form-fitting full fashioned stocking leg blank and having the opposite edges thereof joined together in a rear seam, the rear seamed edges of the stockings having extensions extending upwardly into the trunksv which converge in the seat area and meet each other at the medial rear seam at a point between the crotch and the upper end of the trunks, foot engaging parts at the lower ends of the stocking legs, and an elastic waist band at the upper end of, the trunks.
FLORENCE C. BARNARD.
