This invention relates to a device for trimming the type lines produced by matrix composing and type line casting machines and is described hereinaiter as applied to the type of composing ma- 5 chines selected as example, in which more par ticularly only the type-face edges are subjected to such lateral trimming operations. Heretofore, only stationary knives have been employed both for cutting and also for the above-mentioned pur 10 pose of lateral trimming of the type line face edges of metal type lines cast in matrix-setting and type line casting machines. Such stationary knives, particularly in machines of the kind selected as constructional example for explaining 15 the invention, are normally connected to a knife slide, Whichxis longitudinally slidable on guides of the casting mould and is moved by the machine,
such connection being effected, for example, by means of a special knife block'carrying the knives, and they are moved along the casting mould on the cast type line, the type-face side of which projects from the mould. An inherent characteristic of such stationary knives, however, is their sliding out which, in consequence of the compres- 25 sion of material occurring at the cut edges, readily results in injuries to delicate fine or long ascending and descending parts or accents and punctuation marks of a cast type line.
The new trimming device obviates these disadvantages by the application of rotatably mounted circular knives which permit a shearing cut operating on the type line edges from above and directed obliquely downward. Even in the case of a complicated, delicate composition, type lines undamaged on the face are the result of the satisfactory cutting operation produced by this new circular knife arrangement. In addition, in consequence of the longer cutting edges present in 40 the case of circular knives, re-grinding is necessary much less frequently than in the case of stationary knives with straight cutting edges.
The new circular knives are adjusted to the exact dimensions exactly like the stationary knives heretofore by lateral application against a cast typeline and tightening of their fixing screws. It is, however, also possible, for example by providing a spacing ring corresponding to the thickness of the type line to be cut, to provide ac- 50 curate adjustment, common to both knives, without the assistance of a type line body.
The invention is shown diagrammatically in several constructional examples on the drawings, wherein:

The knife block 3 (Figures 4, 5 and 6) carrying the circular trimming knives 2 is accurately guided in a longitudinally slidable manner by means of its supporting ledges t on the casting mould I mounted in the machine. Its movements in the longitudinal direction of the type line are effected in known manner by the knife slide 5 actuated by the machine driving mechanism, for which purpose a hook 6 pivoted on the said slide engages in the operative position a retaining pin I fixed to the knife block 3. The free space 9 of the knife block 3 recessed above the casting slot of the casting mould 1 receiving the type line 8 serves for accommodating the circular knives 2. On both sides of the space 9 are situated the cheeks Id of the knife block 3, in which are provided the preferably quadrangular recesses I I for receiving the bearing blocks I2 longitudinally slidable therein for the pivots I3 carrying the cir cular knives 2.
The bearing blocks I2, by means of their longitudinal slots l4 permitting the sliding thereof, are carried on the screws [5 serving for their attachment and adapted to be screwed tight in the lateral cheeks IU of the knife block 3. The pivots l3 of the circular knives 2 are inserted on both sides into bores I6 of the bearing blocks 42 and are there secured by split pins 13 in such a manner that the circular knives 2 may readily rotate but without lateral play. The circular knives 2 on their sides facing the type line 8 to be trimmed are held fast in each case by the heads iii of the pivots l3 entering corresponding recesses ll of the circular knives 2. Towards the outside, the bearing blocks 12 adjustably guided on their fixing screws l5 by means of their longitudinal slots N form the supports of the circular knives 2 in every case, that is to say, for every thickness of the type line 8.
When changing from one type line thickness to another, it is merely necessary, after loosening the screws E5, to press the circular knives 2 by means of the bearing blocks 12, in the manner known in the case of stationary knives, against a type line body introduced into the casting slot of the mould l and corresponding in respect of its thickness to the type lines to be cast, and to secure the circular knives in this position by tightening the screws l5.
Even though adjustment of the circular knives entirely or almost entirely parallel to the side faces of the type lines has been found advantageous, it is, however, possible in the arrangement shown to give to the knives an inclination relatively to the type lines, which may be the same for both or even different, but in each case any desired inclination. In order to produce a more or less tapered cut of the type lines, it is possible by means of a suitably oblique arrangement of the recesses I! provided in the knife block 3 for the bearing blocks i2 to impart to the knives an inclination shown by way of, example in Figures '7 to 9. correspondingly, the knives may also be set obliquely to the longitudinal direction of the type line as shown in Figure 10, either simultaneously with the inclination indicated in Figures '7 to 9 or without such inclination.
A further arrangement of the circular knives which is expedient in special cases, is shown in Figures 12 to 14. Here the circular knives 2 are rotatably mounted on a common spindle 19, which is rotatable at both ends in the bores l6 of the bearing blocks l2, and is also longitudinally slidable in certain limits ensuring a reliable guiding at each position of the bearing blocks i2 corresponding to the thickness of the type lines 8. Between the circular knives 2 is a spacing ring 20 situated on their spindle IS on which it is easily slidable and having its width exactly corresponding to the particular type line thickness. When changing from one type line thickness to another, it is thus merely necessary, after loosening the screws Hi, to replace the existing spacing ring 20 by another spacing ring corresponding to the intended line thickness, and then to press the two bearing blocks firmly against one another or rather against the circular knives 2 and secure them in this position by tightening the screws i5. This last-described constructional form equipped with the spacing ring 20, as shown in Figures 12 to 14, permits however only the application of knives exactly parallel to the type line body, while in most cases it is advantageous to arrange the knives inclined to a very slight extent to the type lines. In addition, the application of the spacing ring necessitates an always satisfactory and accurate guiding of all the parts participating in the cutting operation, and a further condition is that the composition of the casting metal should be carefully supervised, since in consequence of the invariability of the spacing ring, the formation of burrs may readily occur in the case of varying shrinkage of the solidifying metal lines.
It is, of course, immaterial for the invention, which relates to the application of rotatably mounted circular knives in place 01' the stationary knives heretofore usual for trimming the type lines of a matrix composing and type line casting machine, whether the type lines to be out are stationary during the cutting operation and the rotatably mounted circular knives, for this purpose longitudinally slidable, are moved along them, or Whether for realising the inventive idea, the converse arrangement is selected. Thus, in particular, without departing from the scope of the invention, the type lines to be trimmed could be movable, that is to say, longitudinally slidable and could be moved along past the circular knives, in such a case arranged stationary, that is to say, not longitudinally slidable, but rotatably mounted.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A type line trimming device for matrix composing and type line casting machines adapted 33 to trim the type line edges on both sides, comprising a vertically recessed knife block slidable longitudinally on the top of a casting mould, and
a pair of horizontally spaced circular knives rotatably and adjustably mounted in said block and having bevelled cutting edges directed toward each other, said knives lying in the recessed portion of said block and operable from above, whereby a shearing cut is directed obliquely downwardly on the type line edges.
2. A type line trimming device for matrix composing and type line casting machines adapted to trim the type line edges on both sides, comprising a knife block slidable longitudinally on a casting mould, a pair of. cheeks on one side of said block, a transverse bore in each of said cheeks, pivot members longitudinally adjustable in said bores, oppositely disposed circular knives on the free ends of said pivot members adapted to engage the edges of a type line, whereby a shearing cut is directed obliquely downwardly on the latter, and means for adjustably securing the inner ends of said pivot members in said bores for selectively positioning said knives with respect to each other.
3. A type line trimming device as claimed in claim 2 wherein said bores are angularly disposed with respect to each other.

A type line trimming device for matrix composing and type line casting machines adapted to trim the type line edges on both sides, comprising a knife block slidable longitudinally on a casting mould, a pair of cheeks on one side of said block, a transverse quadrangular recess in each of said cheeks, bearing blocks slidable longitudinally in said recesses, pivot members supported in said bearing blocks, oppositely disposed circular knives on the free ends of said pivot members adapted to engage the edges of a type line, whereby a shearing cut is directed obliquely downwardly on the type line edges, and means for adjustably securing each of said bearing blocks in said recesses for positioning said knives with respect to each other.
5. A type line trimming device as claimed in 75 claim 4 wherein said quadrangular recesses and said circular knives are angularly disposed with respect to each other.
6. A type line trimming device as claimed in claim 4 including split pins extending transversely through drilled openings in said bearing blocks and complementary openings in said pivot members, for, securing the inner ends of said pivot members in said blocks.
7. A type line trimming device for matrix composing and type line casting machines adapted to trim the type line edges on both sides, comprising a knife block, a pair of cheeks on one side of said block, a transverse quadrangular recess in each of said cheeks, bearing blocks slidable longitudinally in said recesses, pivot members supported in said bearing blocks, a transversely drilled opening in each of said bearing blocks, a complementary opening adjacentthe inner end of each of said pivot members, split pins cooperating with said openings for securing the inner ends of said pivot members in said bearing blocks, oppositely disposed circular knives on the free ends of said pivot members adapted to engage the edges of a type line, whereby a shearing cut is directed obliquely downwardly on the type line edges, a head on the free end of each of said pivot members cooperating with recessed portions on the opposed faces of said knives, for preventing lateral yielding of said knives, and means for adiustably securing said bearing blocks in said quadrangular recesses for selectively positioning said knives with respect to each other.
8. A trimming device as claimed in claim 4, wherein said last named means comprises a longitudinal slot in each of said bearing blocks, and tightening screws in said cheeks, cooperat-' ing with said slots.
9. A type line trimming device for matrix composing and type line casting machines adapted to trim the type line edges on both sides, comprising a knife block, a pair of horizontally spaced cheeks on one side of said block, a transverse bore in each of said cheeks, a spindle supported in said transverse bores and slidable longitudinally therein, a pair of horizontally spaced circular knives carried by said spindle between said cheeks, a ring member on said spindle interposed between said circular knives for maintaining said knives a predetermined distance apart, and means for adjustably securing said spindle in said transverse bores for selectively positioning said knives between said cheeks OTTO BIEBER.
