METHOD OF OPENING AND CLOSING FARBE-GATES,
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,023, dated November 9, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Gr. IIER- MANGE, of the village of Geneva, town ofY Seneca, county of Ontario, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gate with Appendages, the Design of Which is to Insure the Most Convenient and Economical Means of Passing Into and Out of an Inclosure; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference thereon.
I construct a frame in the usual manner with posts firmly set in the ground and surmounted by a transverse beam or plate connecting them at top and properly braced as set forth in Figure l. In the upper end or head of each slat which is thickened for the purpose I invert in a mortise two pulleys so arranged that the vibrating beams to be described shall be embraced by one of the pulleys above and the other below it, the side of the mortise being so cut away as to allow the free passage of the pulleys past the pins or bolts of the vibrating beams, see Fig. 2, which represents the slat head with mortise and pulleys. The slats just described are of unequal length as seen in Fig. l, so that when the gates are shut they are level and the heads of the slats are at unequal heights corresponding with their place on the vibrating beams.
The vibrating beams E, E, E, E, are made of this stuff with suiiicient strength when placed vertically edgewise to sust-ain the weight of the gate, and they are secured to the posts as seen at 8, 8 by bolts or pins or other mechanical equivalents so that they shall vibrate freely. On these vibrating beams the gates are always suspended whether in the act of shutting or opening the same.
In the front and rear side of the beam a plate B, B, I insert two opposite arms 9, 9 and on these I build a system of levers, as seen in the iigure, for the purpose of raising or depressing t-he ends of the vibrating beams, which are joined at I-I and move freely at the joint, the compound motion of these ends being' provided for by a slot in one or both of the beams at the point of junction, through which the pin passes that connects them with the rod I, which in its turn in connected with the levers K L and L by means of a fork with a pin passing through it and working' in a slot in the lever so as to allow the compound motion to be effected. rIhe same slotted arrangement is made in the compound levers L and L. lVhen more convenient or necessary I provide for the compound motion of the levers by making a hinge joint at the bottom of each 'ork and boring a round hole for the pin that is the bracing of the lever, and a double hinge or pair 01"' straps at the ends of the vibrating beams so connecting them with the rod I, as to provide for the compound motion incident to the elevation and depression of the ends of said beams.
At a convenient distance on either side of the gate and within reach of persons on horseback or in a carriage I suspend from the ends of the levers K K and L a rod M or a rope 19 or l5 for the purpose of operating the whole arrangement without leaving the carriage or dismounting from the horse.
The operation of this combination is as follows: A foot passenger may go through the gate by sliding one of its parts aside with his hand on the gate. Persons on horseback or mounted on a wagon or in a. carriage by pulling down the arm M by the operation of the lever K raises the rod I and the ends of the vibrating beams E, E, until these ends are higher than the center of the beam, when the gates will slide or roll outward and thus open. It will be seen however in practice that beiore the gates part at the bottom the tops will be open and the space will be like the letter V. This is owing to the slats being of unequal length and the shortest being innermost after passing through. The gates are shut by pushing up the arm M or its mechanical equivalent or by pulling down the rope N connected with the compound lever, by which the rod I and the inner ends of the vibrating beams E, E, are depressed and the gates roll together.
