4 Claims.
The invention relates to listing machines having a shiftable paper carriage provided with a rotary platen, suitable line spacing ,and fractional line spacing means, and a signal bell to give the operator notice when a predetermined point is I reached in matter being typed upon a paper sheet passing around the platen.
An object of the invention is to provide means for fractionally adjusting a driven gear forming 1. part of the signaling means operable with means for bodily moving said' gear relative to a drive gear fast on theplaten shaft so that these gears will mesh in case there shall have been fractional line spacing adjustment of the platen. 1" Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention asapplied.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Figure 4,
with bell removed, and gears disengaged.
Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2, with gears engaged.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the shaft whereon the-signal gear is mounted, parts being broken away.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2 on a larger scale, showing the manual levers in inop-' erative position in full lines, and in operative position in dot and dash lines.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6--8, Figure 4, showing the gears meshed.
In these drawings, the numeral I designates the rotary platen of a listing machine, such for instance as disclosed in the U. S. Patent to Crosman No. 1,945,026, issued Jan. 30, 1934, said 40 platen being mounted upon a shiftable carriage 2.
Any suitable line spacing means and fractional line spacing means for the platen may be used. In this case however, the disclosure of the UrS; Patent to Loring P. Crosman, No. 2,134,605, is-
5 sued October 25, 1938, is followed, wherein there is a main handle knob 3 for line spacing and a secondary handle knob 4 for fractional line spacing or preliminary alignment of the paper sheet.
(Broadly old signaling means is used, which may I 50' be disabled or rendered operative by moving a spur gear 5 bodily relative to or into and out of mesh with a pinion 6 fast on the platen shaft.
Fast to. sleeve 'Lmounted for rotary and longitudinal movementupon a shaft 8 whereupon spur 55 gear 5 is rotatably mounted, is radial arm 9, having toothed outer end I adapted upon inward longitudinal movement of said sleeve to engage predetermined teeth of gear in accord with the rotary setting of radial arm 9, to permit varying rotation of gear 5 for typewritten matter of a varying number of lines, prior to sounding of'the signal bell.' In this setting, said sleeve 1 is first moved outwardly longitudinally of shaft 8 against the tension'of its spring II to disengage toothed end ID from gear 5, the sleeve being 10 then-moved rotatably to a new position on gear 5 engaging a clamp nut 4| to be described and which forms in effect an axially aligned end extension of shaft 8, operation of manual lever l4 ,5 moving gear 5 bodily upon the pivot of arm l3 as a center;
Fulcrumed at H upon and moving with radial arm 9 is a bell clapper lever l8, having a tooth I9 adapted in one direction of movement of said arm to engage a tooth 20 of pivotal arm l3 to thereb depress said bell clapper lever against the tension of its spring 2|, said lever being released after tooth l9 passes tooth 20, to sound the signal bell 23. 'In the opposite direction of movement of radial arm 9, tooth i9 is adapted to yield'and pass tooth 20 without operation of the bell clapper lever. Tooth l9 forms part of a lever 24, fulcrumed at 25 to the bell clapper lever and in clockwise movement of the parts as seen in Figure 5, -tooth 20 exerts pressure upon the double beveled tooth l9 in the direction of the length and in line with the fulcrum of lever 24 and both levers 24 and I8 are depressed as a unit, whereas in counter-clockwise movement of the parts, tooth 20 exerts pressure upon tooth [9 at right angles to lever 24 and said lever and its tooth will yield and pass tooth 20 without operation of the bell clapper lever. The retracting spring 2| of clapper lever l8 has connection at one-end with stud. of radial arm 9, said stud engaging a slot 26 of the lever and acting to limit the 'movement of the lever in both directions. The lever 24 has extension disengages said gear from the platen gear t, and
this disengagement being effected, a spring il to be described and which has the coils thereof at to said pivotal arm is, to limit the move-- wound and tensioned during the rotation of gear 5 in the typing of the matter on the paper sheet, will'retract gear 5, sleeve 7 and radial arm Q as a unit rotatably to first or starting position, a'lateral stud 28 0f said gear having stop engagement with one end of a lever 29, fulcrumed at ment.
During the reverse movement of the parts, stud 28 is adapted to engage a laterally bent end of and operate lever 29 against the tension of its retracting spring 3| and pass said lever without any such stop, said bent end having normal stop engagement with extension l3 of arm l3.
The following means are provided to fractionally rotate the gear 5 (in case there shall have been fractional line spacing rotation of the platen) at the same time that said gear is moved bodily towards the platen shaft gear 6, so that these gears will mesh:
Manual lever 32 is fulerumed at 33 to the carriage framing and the aforesaid pivotal arm l3, which is pivoted at one end thereof at 34 to said lever 32 at one side of the fulcrum .33 thereof, at the other end and on the other side of said fulcrum 33 has fast connection to be explained with the aforesaid shaft 8 whereon spur gear 5 is mounted, operation of manual lever 32 therefore allowing fractional rotation of shaft 8 and gear 5, under the influence of spring H.
Manual lever 14 operable as described to accomplish bodily movement of the gear 5, is provided with a spring 35 acting to hold saidlever in either of its two adjusted positions, that is to say with gear 5 moved into mesh with platen gear 5 or awaytherefrom, said lever engaging stop 36 of the carriage framing to limit its out ward movement and engaging lever 32 to limit its inward movement.
In adjusting the signal into operative engagement, the operator pulls forward on manual lever I hand, in order to make the routine the same under all conditions, having given lever 14 a slight'lead, will exert pressure upon manual lever 32; continuing pressure upon both levers until the-gears 5 and 6 come into mesh.
In case fractional adjustment of the parts occurs, a lug 31 oflever I4 is adapted to engage over a projection '38 of lever 32 to hold the latter against retraction under influence of its spring 39; whereas, if no fractional adjustment occurs, lug 31 will move under projection 38, and prevent movement of lever 32. The handle arm of lever 32 and extension 32' of said lever are adapted to engage opposite sides of carriage frame stop 40, to limit rections. 1
'I'l'le spring I I is a spirally coiled spring and fits over a reduced outer end portion of shaft 5 within an outer end recess sleeve 1, a screw 8' engaging the outer end of said shaft having a. head bearing against the outer end of the spring. The spring H is a helically coiled spring and fits within an inner recess of the hub portion of gear I, with oneend fast to the gear and the other end fast to the shaft, said spring exerting tension against gear 5, to normally hold lug 28 thereof against stop lever 29, rotation of said gear durits-movement in both diing the typing of matter on thev paper sheet being against the tension-of said spring.
In assembling the parts, the gear 5 with spring H in place is fitted over the enlarged inner end portion of shaft 8 to contact collar 8" of said shaft; spring I! is fitted over the reduced outer 'end portion of shaft 8 and screw 8 engaged with shaft 8 to confine spring H; sleeve 1 has the enlarged inner end portion of its bore rotatably engaged overcollar 8 and the'outwardly extending hub portion of gear' 5, the inner terminalthreaded stem of shaft 8 being then engaged with a perforation of the outer end of pivotal arm l3, and finally clamp nut 4| is engaged with said stem to make shaft 8 fast to pivotal arm l3 and hold the parts together; The manual lever M has the cam slot thereof engaged with a reduced portion of said clamp nut 4|, which forms in effect an extension of shaft 8.
The signaling mechanism is useful to give notice when the last of a predetermined number of lines of matter being typed upon the paper sheet is reached, for instance; first, when the sheet is full; second when a number of columns of matter of even length are being typed on the sheet and the end of one column 'is reached, or third when it is desired to take a total or sub-total following the typing of each given number of lines in a column.
, In the first case, the paper sheet is withdrawn and a new sheet inserted in the second case,,the platen is reversely rotated by use of the -main handle knob until lateral stud 28 of gear 5 hasv stop engagement with lev 29,- the typing of the next columnbeing t. started, and in the third case, the total bein, taken, manual lever I4 is operated to disengage gear 5 from pinion 6, whereupon the gear 5, sleeve 1 and radial arm 9 will be reversely rotated as a unit by spring H to first or starting position, lateral stud 28 of said gear having stop engagement with lever 29 to limit the movement.
I claim:
1. In a listing machine, a shiftable carriage provided with a rotary platen, line spacing and fractional line spacing means for the platen,
signaling means for the last itemof a column of matter to be typed upon a paper sheet passing around the platen including a signal gear, the platen shaft having a gear with which the signal gear is adapted to mesh, and means for ac- .complishing meshing, of the gears following fractional line spacing rotation of the platen including conjointly manually operable devices for moving said signal gear bodily relative to the platen fractional line spacing means for the platen, signaling means for the last'item of a column of -matter to be typed upon a paper sheet passing around the platen including a signal gear having a shaft, the platen shaft having a gear with which the signal gear is adapted to mesh, and
means for accomplishing meshing of the gears following fractional line spacing rotation of the platen including conjointly manually operable devices for moving said signal gear bodily relative to the platen gear and for simultaneously fractionally rotating the signal gear and for gaging the fractional rotation, the manually-operable devices including each a lever having a fulcrum on the carriage, the lever of one of said manually operable devices being provided with .an arm pivoted thereto and having fast connection with the shaft of the signal gear and whereon the signal gear is mounted.

In a listing machine, a shiftable carriage provided with a rotary platen, line spacing and fractional line spacing means for the platen, signaling means for the last item of a column of matter to be typed upon a paper sheet passing around the platen including a signal gear, the platen shaft having a gear with which the signal gear is adapted to mesh, and means for accomplishing meshing of the gears following frac-,

4. In a listing machine, a shiftable carriage provided with a rotary platen, line spacing and fractional line spacing means for the platen, signaling'means for the last item of a column of matter to be typed upon a paper sheet passing around the platen including a signal gear having a shaft, the platen shaft having a gear with which the signal gear is adapted to mesh, and means for accomplishing meshing oi the gears following fractional line spacing rotation of the platen including conjointly manualy operable devices for moving said signal gear bodily relative to the platen gear and for simultaneously fractionally rotating the signal gear and for gaging the fractional rotation, the manually operable devices including each a lever having fulcrum on the carriage, the lever of one of said manually operable devices being provided with an arm pivoted atone end thereto at one side of its fulcrum, said arm at its other end and ai the other side of said fulcrum having fast connection with the signal gear shaft.
