GOLF TEEING DEVICE Filed May 23, '1939 I NV EN TOR. Josephine FZ Jewet ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 30, 1940 GOLF TEENG DEVICE lJosephine lFranoise Jewett, Los iAngeles,'(lalii., -a`ssignor of `two-thirds to D. Jackson Young, North Hollywood, Calif., andRobertC. Stevens,v West Loslngeles, Calif.,joilitly Application May 23, 1939, Serial No. 275,175
"9 claims. {Phisinvention `relates to golng and deals with va d eviceforteeing golf fballs. i
lThe invention to be Yhereinafter described 'has `beendevelopedfor usein driving golf balls and types ofv driving- .wi'll'iindl lusefulness 1in certain ranges for practising purposes. In ranges of this nature, =it is customary for a person to buy a bucket of balls -and then to drive the balls one after Yanother fromthe same tee. The lpresent practice is to :rollrthe -balls on the ground and vthenjto `tee them one at a time for each shot. Under these, conditions the'balls may become Wet and -dirty land the driver spends most of his time `teeing Aup the ball-'s and cleaning lhis' hands.
My invention has been designed and developed to mechanically Ytee the'ball'and at the same time `keep tlfre -gballs dry-and clean. By using my device, theperson need not touch 'the Pball; consequently, he gets no dirtfo'r moisture von his hands, with the result that his l'grasp 'on the club is not impaired, `he is nots-*continually bending over, and the ball-is clean anddry for driving.
The principal objectief, "my invention `is to Yprovide *a 'foot operated device that will 'feed and 25 .mount golf 'balls uponaixedftee. 'Ano-ther object islto'provide a deviceofcthe above 'characterthat -Will ffeed a-predeterminednumber 'of balls. A fur- -ther object is 'to `prm/idea 'golf 'ball tee of "elastic imaterial wherein lthre .golf ball is etru'ded vthrough the tee. U
Other objects and advantages Will 'become apparent as the description proceeds in conjunction with `the;tlravv'lrg7 fin which:
Figure :1 is a vertical longitudinal cross section of l'my device. sho-Wing theffoperating iparts;
vice having an "elastic member through which the halls are "eitruded andfupon which the balls 'come to rest, together with correlated mechanism for automatically 'extrudirfg the balls and holding -them upon the 'elastic member. lThe 4elastic vmember 'in effectbecomes.a tee and is so arranged that "the ball i's V'supported in a lperfect position for ia shot. vInjaddii'lion, the 'device includes an arrangement whereby a predetermined number, or any number, of balls may be con'- tinially 'fd 'to-'tl'1eapp'aratus. f
Referring to the drawing, it Will be seen -that my device comprises a 'box-like casing generally designated II, which is adapted to be set into the ground and coveredwith a cover board I2,
l Figure 2 is@ tp @view ofmy device within@ i'sho-Wing 'the cover board `arranged to Vcome,fsulos'tant'ally flush with the surface-of the ground I3. The board may be offany shapeI desired or found useful and in practice ]Z recommend that a board of the shape sho-wn in Figure 3 be used. The box may-be of any material suitable for the purpose and may .-loe 4of lanyfci'mstruction desired. A t one end of Athe box I-I, I mount an upright hollow cylinder III, wlliclficarries at its -upper end an elastic -member` -general1y designated I5. The elastic member is mounted-upon the cylinder I4 in any suitable manner which will ,insure against it vbeingrforced from the end of the cylinder. It will benotedthat theelastic member I5 has a tapered upwardlyextending wall I6, which may be slotted as'shownjat-I'i in Figures 1 and 2. cylinder lIll, I ymount 'a A-reciprocaiole piston i8, having `on `its upper end'a conical section I9. Means is Aprovided for reciprocating the piston i8 in the cylinder I4 and, as shown, consistsof a 'lever -20 -pivotally mounted in the case II on the pivot {point-ZI and connected to the -pisto-n I8 by means, `o fga pin and slot connection generally designated,A 22.- k-It is to be understood that the cylinder I4 is slottedas shown at 23 to permitl the ends ofthe lever 20 to extend into the cylinder .and engage the pin inthe piston. On thel opposite end -of the flever E20 'and in the` case II, I mount a plunger '24, which is -adaptedto Abe foot operated and carries on its 'upper end =a afoot knob 25. The plunger Zd is mounted vin :a sleeve in the case II and provided `with a slot 21 adapted to lpass `a pin l'2-8 fixed rin the plunger 24. The pin '26 in turn works ina slot `v29 in the end of the fleve'rfZU. Spring means 30 may be `incorporated between the lower end of the `plunger 2li and the :bottom of the 'sleeve -26 for holding the foot knob 26, saidsleeve being fixedv Inside the the opposite end of 25 in a normally raised position so that the piston f I8 will normally come to rest in the lower end of will operate to raise the piston 'I8 in the cylinder I4 to thedot'td position 'shown upon 'depressing the knob 25. The 'knob 25 'has 'heen designed to 4loe foot operated a'nd accordingly is only a slight :distance vabovefth'e surface of Ath'e ground I3. However, lit-m'ay be operated by any other means, s'uch as power means, ma'nua'l "means,y and may also be electrically locked, mechanically locked or controlled 4by 'a coin -controlled mechanism, if found 'desirableor necessary; Associated with the cylinder I'Il is a tube 31, whic'h has at its upper 'end va hopper 32, adaptedftoreceive golf balls, vand which communicates at its lower end with the vinterior the cylinder I4. Under this arrangement l:golf balls Vvrnay be 'automatically and continually fedtothe cylinder and', as shown, one of the balls 33 will come to rest upon the top of the tapered portion I9. then in position to be mounted upon the tee and yis The ball 33 is so mounted by depressing the foot knob 25, whereupon the piston I8 rises in the cylinder I4 and extrudes the ball 33 through the elastic member I5 so that it comes to rest upon a seat I6 on the top of thetapered portion I6. In order to overcome any tendency of the ball`33 to shoot through the member I5, due to the sudden extruding action through the member I5, I incorporate an arm 34 arranged toi swing up and over the top of the ball, as shown by the dotted lines, to engage and hold the ball against further movement once it is through the member. The arm 34 accordingly is pivotally mounted upon the cylinder I4, as shown at 35, and is operated by means of a link 36 pivotally connected at its opposite ends to the arm 34 `and the lever 20, as shown at 3l and 38 respectively. The board I2 is formed with angopening 39 to pass the arm 34 and also with openings 4G and 4I to accommolso date the tee member I5 and the plunger 24 .respectively.
In operation, the device is irst loaded with balls by putting a predetermined number, or any number of balls, in the hopper 32. The balls in turn are fed through the pipe 3| to the cylinder I4 and the person using the device merely depresses the foot knob 25 to mount a ballupon the member I5. It is to be noted that the ball is extruded through the same member that serves as a tee for the ball. The arm 34 is so arranged that it will come over the top of the ball just as it is extruded through the member I5 and will hold the ball in place upon the tee. After the pressure upon the foot knob 25 is released, the spring 3G brings the mechanism back to its normal position, whereupon the iinger 34 drops back to its normal, out-of-the-way position and another ball rolls into place upon the top of the piston I 8. The device is simple, inexpensive, durable and easy to operate.
