Description

A 1940- o. CORDS ELECTRIC CABLE .l iled Oct. 15, 19s? [/7 Van/0r (9 Cards Patented Apr. 23, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application October 15, 1937, Serial No. 169,811 In Germany October '21, 1936 20laims.
This invention relates to an air-spaceinsulated dectric cable, more particularly a high-frequency :able, 0! the kind described in my prior Patent No. 2,118,005, dated May 1'1, 1938.
In my prior patent in question I have described in air-space insulated electric cable comprising a :entralconductor, an outer covering surrounding ;he said conductor in spacial disposal thereto and :omprising helical windings, and helically wound mpporting means supporting the said conductor n relation to the said outer covering and dis- :vosed between the convolutions oi the said wind- .DIS.
In certain embodiments oi this general idea he supporting means for the central conductor :onsist oi threads or tapes which are passed about -.he conductor and over bars formed by the outerv :overing, these bars constituting the points of ntersection oi the preferably oppositely wound tapes of which the outer covering is composed. Owing to the helical winding of the tapes these bars are also disposed along a helical path.
It is the object at the invention to improve generally on air-space insulated cables 01' this :haracter and to provide a modified design in which the bars about which the supporting threads or tapes are passed can-be produced more readily than in the case of my said prior patent.
With this and other objects in view the outer covering consists of a tubular member, the wall oi which is furnished with obliquely disposed slots disposed along a helical path and arranged in such spacial disposal to one another that bars are iormed between the same about which there can be passed the holding threads or tapes for tha conductor.
A tape may be used to form the tubular member, which in this case may have a longitudinal seam. The tube can be formed in the machine employed for the production oi the cable. and if desired the longitudinal edges oi the tube can be made to overlap. In certain circumstances a connection oi the overlapping edges is unnecessary. It is also possible to connect the longitudinal edges of the tube by folding them together, or the connection may be performed by soldering or welding. In the latter case the iongitudinaledguoithetubemaybeallowedto abut endwise one against theoflm'.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 illustrates diagrammatically a piece of cable according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section according to the line 5 11-11 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a piece oi tape, furnished yvith slots, from which the tubular member is formed.
In the drawing i is the central conductor of the high-frequency cable. or screen consists 01' a tubular member 2 having slots 3. As shown in Flgs.'1 and 3, the slots are disposed along a helical path about the tube and are so arranged that between the same there are formed bars 4. The central conductor I is maintained in spacial disposal to the outer covering by means of the thread or tape 5. This thread or tape is passed about the bars 4 in the manner shown in Fig.1.
In the particular embodiment shown there is 80 the said conductor in spacial disposal thereto so and consisting of a member bent into tubular form and having a longitudinal seam, said tubular member having slots disposed helically in spacial relation to one another to form intermediate bars, and a supporting means for the said con- 35 ductor passed about the said conductor and over the said barsto hold the said conductor in spacial disposal to the said outer covering.
2. In an air-space insulated electric cable, a
central conductor, an outer covering surround- 0 ing said conductor in spacial disposal thereto and having slots disposed helically in special relation to one another to form intermediate bars, and-supporting means passed about said conductor and through said slots over said bars, the as said outer covering consisting of a member bent into tubular form and having the edges brought together to form a longitudinal'seam, said slots being disposed obliquely of said edges.
