UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE'.
A HENRY sriNDLER, or -EAsT sAGINAw, MICHIGAN.
YIMPROVEMENT IN TUBE-CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,777., dated September 16, 1879; application filed July 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SPINDLER, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Tube-Clamp, of which the following is a specification. Y
Figure 1 is a plan of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same on line .fr x,
` Fig. 1.
Similar letters of v'reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective clamp to be used in tubing or withdrawing tubes from salt, oil, orArtesian wells.
The invention consists of a metallic frame in which is rigidly secured one jaw of a clamp, while the other jaw is secured to a nut that slides in the frame, and is worked by screw or lever. y
In the drawings, A is the frame; B, the fixed jaw of the clamp, secured by bolts or screws to the frame. O is the movable jaw of the clamp, secured in like manner to the sliding nut D, that is moved forward and back by the screw E, that passes through the frame F is the lever with which to turn the screw. G represents a tube held between the jaws. of the clamp.
In tubing, the clamp is set over themouth of the well, and the first length of tube is lowered into the well until the clamp can seize and hold it at the top; then another length is attached, the clamp is loosened, and the tube lowered until its upper end comes down and is clamped, and this operation is repeated until the well is tubed.
In withdrawing the tubes .the operation is of a similar character.
Should the hoisting-gear or attachments get ont of order and suddenly release the tube, the operator will in most instances be able to catch it before it drops into the well, because of the rapid action of the clamp. The' jaws can be readily removed and replaced, and any required sizebe used.
I am aware that it is not newto make a frame in two parts, and provided with an eccentric jaw for clamping the tube or to use a pivoted jaw clamped or raised by an eccentric and pivoted dog; but
What I claim as new and of my invention 1s- 'lhe combination, with frame A and xed jaw B, of the movable jaw C, made fast to a slide-nut, D, as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY SPINDLER.
