Application December 9, 1938, Serial No. 244,860
' 3Claims. (01. 28544) This invention relates to a device for flushing drains of sinks and the like to effect cleaning thereof when clogged.
The primary object of'the present invention is to provide a device of this character whereby a water lead is had from a faucet'to a drain pipe or the like, so that said pipe can be cleaned with dispatch and without possibility of leakage at the faucet or at the inlet of said drain pipe.
A further more specific object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above characterv wherein the discharge end or outlet nozzle of the same is provided with means en-' r gageable with the guard cross of the drain pipe so as to maintain a tight union between said nozzleand the inlet end of the drain pipe and prevent leakage at this point without the necessity of maintaining pressure thereon from the hand of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is efficient in use and I extremely simple and durable in construction.
The present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement" of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in th accompanying drawing and claimed. I
. In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through a sink showing the device constructed in accordance with the present invention applied to afaucet and the drain pipe, the device being partly'broken away and in section.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section on line 2-2 of Figure 1. I 1 Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the hook-carrying washer forming part of the construction shown in Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form of metal reinforcing tube for the outlet nozzle of the device wherein the guard cross engaging hooks are carried directly by said reinforcing tube.
Referring in detail to the drawing, A indicates a kitchen sink, B the water faucet which sup- 45 plies water to the sink, and C the main-inlet fitting having the sunken guardcross 5 and prov viding the connection between the sink and the I. faucet. B to the drain outlet fitting C. One end of the hose has a flared mouth 8 to fit various sizes of faucet mouths, and a clamp collar 9 to effect atight union between the mouth 8 and the mouth of the faucet. However, it, will be obvious that a suitable hose coupler may be fitted and clamped in the mouths in case the faucet should have a threaded mouth.
At the opposite end, the hose has a nozzle II] of greater external diameter than the hose and terminating at its outer extremity in an enlarged truncated conical head H which is highly resilient so that the same may be forced well into the drain outlet fitting C to provide a tight union between the nozzle and said fitting C so that leakage at this point is prevented. The
nozzle is internally reinforced by means of a coaxial metallic reinforcing tube l2 molded therein so as to prevent undue restriction of the passage through thehose at the nozzle when the latter is forced into the drain fitting C. v
In order to maintain the tight union between the head ll of nozzle l0 and the fittingC, after the water pressure has been turned into the hose 1 by opening the faucet B, and without maine taining downward pressure on the head I I by the hand of the user, I provide means on the head H engageable with the guard cross 5. This means may consist of spaced oppositely facing and diametrically opposed depending hooks l3 engageable with a member of the guard cross 5 upon slight turning of the nozzle Ill after insertion of its head I! within the fitting C. As
, clamping engagement of the washer M be insufficient to prevent turning thereof relative to the head ll, said washer M may be suitably held against turning such as by providing the same with spurs or prongs arranged to bite into the head II as commonly employed in other arts for a similar purpose.
, As shown in Figure 4, the hooks 13 may be H formed integral with the outer end of reinforcing tube I2 to function in the same way, instead of providing the hooks on a Washer as in Figures 1 f to 3 inclusive. Otherwise, the purpose and manner of use will be exactly the same in both cases.
With the device applied as above described, the water delivered by the faucet B, when the latter is opened, will be forced under pressure directly into the drain pipe 6 without leakage at the faucet or, the outlet drain fitting C. In this manner, the
drain pipe 8 will be thoroughly cleaned with dispatch.
What I claim as new is:
1. A drain pipe-cleaner comprising a flexible hose provided with means at one end for attachment to a faucet mouth, the opposite end of the hose having a nipple terminating in an enlarged truncated conical head for fitting in a drain outlet fitting, an axial metallic reinforcing tube molded in said nipple to prevent restriction of the passage through the latter when the head of said nipple is forced into the outlet drain connection, and oppositely facing diametrically opposed projecting hooks carried by the lowerend of said tube. at the outer end of said head and engageable with a member of the guard cross of the drain outlet fitting to maintain a tight union between said head and said fitting.
2. A drain pipe cleaner comprising a flexible hose provided with means at one end for attachment to a faucet mouth, the opposite end of the hose having a nipple terminating in an enlarged truncated conical head for fitting in a drain outlet fitting, an axial metallic reinforcing tube molded in said nipple to prevent restriction of the passage through the latter when the head of said nipple is forced into the outlet drain connection, oppositely facing diametrically opposed projecting;
hooks carried by the outer end of said head and engageable with a member of the guard cross of;
the drain outlet fitting to maintain atight union between said head and said fitting, a washer disposed against the outer end of said head and provided with said hooks, and an outturned flange on the outer end of said reinforcing tube clamping the washer tightly between the same and the outer end of the head.
3. A drain pipe cleaner comprising a flexible hose provided with means at one end for attach-5' ment to a faucet mouth, the opposite end of the hose having a nipple terminating in an enlarged truncated conical head for fitting in-a drain outlet fitting, an axial metallic reinforcing tube molded in said nipple to prevent restriction of the passage through the latter when the head of said nipple is forced into the outlet drain connection, and oppositely facing diametrically opposed projecting hooks carried by the outer end of said head and engage-able with a member of the guard cross of the drain outletfitting to maintain atight union between said head and said fitting, said hooks being integral with the outer end of said reinforcing tube.
