The reciprocatory bar 28 carries the arm or member 36 and carries the same in such form as to have it readily removable therefrom, as by the screws 31. This arm 36 has one end thereof extending upwardly through the elongated slot 38, formed in the removable plate Id. The up.-'
per end of the arm 36 which extends through the slot 38 is provided with a device by means of which a pearl edge forming blade 39 may be' removable and adjustable attached thereto, as by threading to receive a screw 40.
The pearl edge forming knife or blade 39 being attached to the upper end of the arm 36, and the arm 36 being attached to the reciprocable bar 28, the blade 39 reciprocates transversely of the presser-foot I8 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ordinary presser-foot may be employed by forming a slot therein, or the ordinary presser-foot may be cut off on a transverse line through the hole 5i therein, and through which passes the sewing needle, and to the portion remaining, the portion which was cut off, or a similar portion may be attached by means of a spring 42, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
As the main drive shaft l8 rotates, the worm 2! rotates the worm wheel 21, and thus the cam 26, in synchronism with the reciprocatory motion of the usual needle carried by the machine, and also in synchronism with the bobbin holder l3. The reciprocatory bar 28 is therefore moved to the left, as shown in Fig. 3, by the cam against the tension of the spring 32, and when the rounded end of such bar 28 rides over the top of the cam 26, the spring 32 acts to return the bar 28 to its normal position. Asis apparent, this produces a reciprocatory motion of the pearl edgin blade 39 transversely of the presser-foot i8 and at a point adjacent to the needle passing through the hole 4| in such presser-foot. Therefore the material 54 being fed through the machine by the feeding device, which passes upwardly through the slots 31 in the blade l4 and moving in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, will have a line of stitching 45 thereon and such stitching will be in a substantially straight line. The pearl edging blade 39, however, moving inwardly to the left as shown in Fig. 1, and transversely to the line of movement of the fabric 44, the fabric 44 will be indented. at spaced intervals, as indicated by the reference numeral 45, and the fabric is distorted to some degree at each indentation, and therefore the line of sewing 45 in the finished article will appear as a wavy line Such cord 49 is attached to the bottom of.

To assist in. feeding the fabric 44 or Q? through the machine, to have the pearl edging formed thereon, and particularly to assist in feeding the cord 49 I find it advantageous to groove the lower endof the presser-foot l8, as shown by the reference numeral 52 in Fig, 2.
The machine, when my device is used, may be the ordinary sewing machine and therefore adapted to be utilized for a general line of work.
My attachment permits this, and for example, where the work to be done in the machine will not be disturbed because of the presence of the end of the member 26 extending upwardly through the slot 38 of the plate- Hi, all that, is

Whereas, I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that manychanges and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
In a pearl edging attachment for operating in association with a sewing machine for producing a pearl edge hem on fabric and the like, the combination of a base plate adapted to be mounted on the sewing machine, a reciprocable bar thereon, a cam rotatably mounted on the base plate, and adapted to positively move the reciprocable bar in one direction, resilient means for moving the reciprocable bar in the other j direction, a pearl edging blade carried by said bar and operating in association with the sewing mechanism to produce a pearl edge hem on'fabric and the like, and means for mounting said attachrnent on the under side of the base of a sewin machine and with the pearl edge blade above the base.
