20 Claims. (01. 20-23) This invention relates to improvements in sliding doors. I
One object of the invention is to provide a door construction for refrigerator cars compris-' ing a door member for closing the door opening of the car, means for guiding the door for sliding movement lengthwise of the car toward and away from the door opening, and means for moving the door laterally into and out of said open-' ing, wherein means is provided for centering the door during movement into and out of the door opening.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide in a door construction as specified in the preceding paragraph, manually controlled means ior'operating the means for moving the door laterally into and out of said door opening.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door construction for refrigerator cars comprising a door member whichis slidable into position in front of the door opening and away from said position, and manually operated means for moving said door from said positionlaterally into the door opening and forcing the same tightly 2 5 closed, or prying the same open and moving the same laterally outwardly tosaid position in front of the door opening, wherein cooperating centering devices are provided on the car wall and door to register the latter with said door opening during movement of the same into the opening.
Still another object of the invention is to provide in a door construction comprising a sliding door which is also laterally movable to enter the same into or withdraw it from the door opening, and manually operated. means at the leading and rear ends of the door for moving the same laterally,,means for locking said manually operated means against movement when the door is closed, so arranged and designed that the man-,
' ually operated means at one end of the door is locked against actuation until the manually op,-
erated means at the other. end of the door has been actuated, thereby assuring actuation of said. manually operated means in the proper sequence.

In carrying out my invention as illustrated in Figuresl, 2', 3, 4;, 8, '9, and 10, I provide broadly apair'ofvertically disposed, rotary operating bars A--A a p-air of 'actuating'levers B-B pivoted on car above and below the door opening; keeper engaging end members'D- D and DD on the topfan'gl bottom ends of the bars AAf; top and bottom pairs'oi supporting bearing housings E-E secured to-the door; top andbottom sets ofsup- 45 porting and guiding cranlr members FF journaled'in the housings E-- E and having geared connection with the bars A-'-A; top and bottom carrier means G- -G. and l-I-I-I guided by the top and bottom tracks respectively; a centering guide bracket J on the car; a guide member K on the door cooperating with the bracket J; combined latch and sealing means L on the door for lockingth'operating handle levers 3-13 in horizontal position when the door is closed; and latch brackets M-M with which the handle levers are engaged to hold the bars A--A against rotation when the door has been withdrawn from the door opening.
The top and bottom tracks 23 and 24-, which are disposed respectively above and below the door opening 2!, are of such a length that the door 22 may be slid entirely clear of the door opening. The tracks are suitably secured to the side wall of the car in any Well-known manner. The track 24- is in the form of a rail on which the carrier means H-H are slidable. The track 23 presents a longitudinally extending, downwardly opening guide channel in which the carrier means GG are guided.
The carriers HI-I are in the form of slides, supported on the track 24 by anti-friction rollers 25-45 and 25-25 which travel on the raillik track 24.
The supporting and guiding crank members FF are arranged in pairs at opposite ends of the door, one member of each pair at the top and the other at the bottom of said door. Each crank member F comprises. a vertically disposed shaft portion at its inner end, journaled in the corresponding bearing housing E, a radially disposed arm at the outer end of said shaft portion, and a vertically disposed, cylindrical bearing projection or crank pin 2! at the outer end of the arm 26. These crank members F-F and F-F serve to support and guide the door in its movement into and out of the door opening and are slidably connected to the top and bottom tracks 23 and 24. As shown most clearly in Figure 1, the outer ends of the lower crank members FF are supported on the carriers H-H by means of the crank pins 2'l2l' which are journalecl in suitable openings in said carriers. The crank pins 21-2! of the upper crank members E -F extend into the guideway of the upper track 23 and are guided along said track by the carrier means G-G, the latter being in the form of rollers journaled on the crank pins 21-21 and traveling in the channel of the track 23. As will be evident, the door 22 is thus supported for sliding movement lengthwise of the car and for movement into and out of the door opening by the top and bottom crank members F-F and F-F, these members having pivotal swinging connection with the supporting and guiding carrier means on said track.
The crank members F-F and F-F are actuated through rotation of the operating bars A-A to swing the crank arms in reverse directions to move the door 22 respectively into and out of the door opening, suitable gearing being employed for this purpose. Each operating bar A is rotatably supported at its top and bottom ends in the corresponding bearing housings E-E by means of the end members D--D thereof. Each end member D is riveted to the corresponding end of the bar A and. includes a cylindrical shaft section journaled in the corresponding housing bracket E. The shaft sec tion extends outwardly of the bearing housing and has the usual keeper engaging crank arm 28 at the outer end extending radially thereof and provided with the usual cam lug I28 which cooperates in a well-known manner with the slotted keeper which is fixed to the car wall. As will be evident, four such keepers are employed, two above and two below the door open ing.
The gear means for driving the crank members F-F and F--F are preferably contained in the housings E-E and E-E and connect the shaft portions of the crank members F--F and FF with the shaft portions of the end members DD and DD of the operating bars AA. ihese gear means are designed to provide for properly timed rotation of the crank arms F-F and E -F and with respect to the keeper engaging end members DD and DD to effect closing and opening of the door and are preferably of the character disclosed in Figure 9 of my copending application, Serial No. 106,300, filed October 19, 1936, or of the character disclosed in application, Serial No. 139,911, filed April 30. 1937, by William A. Heitncr. The timing of these gear means is such that initial movement of the door 22 into the door opening is effected by rotation of the supporting crank arms F-F and F-F and the final closing movement is effected by the keeper engaging crank members DD and DD of the bars AA while engaged with the keepers C-C and C-C, and that the opening movement of the door 22 is initiated by the keeper engaging crank members D-D and D-D while cooperating with the keepers and completed by the crank arms F-F and F-F after the keeper engaging members have been disengaged from the keepers.
The bars A--A are actuated by the handle levers BB. Each lever B is pivoted at its inner end to the corresponding bar A by a pivot member 29 for swinging movement in a vertical plane. Each lever B has a hand grip portion 3!) at its outer end and is slightly enlarged in width at the inner end of said hand grip portion, as indicated at 3|. The enlarged portion 3! is provided with an opening 32 therethrough for a purpose hereinafter described. As shown most clearly in Figures 3 and 4, the outer surface of the metal of the section of said enlargement 3| above the opening 32 is undercut. as indicated at 33, to cooperate with a certain latch member hereinafter described. As shown in Figure l, the handle levers B-B project laterally inwardly from the bars AA when the door closed and the lever B of the left hand bar A is disposed above the other lever B and is spaced therefrom.
The combined sealing and latch means L comprises a vertical elongated base casting or plate 34 secured to the outer side of the door 22, and a pair of pivoted latch members ELL-35 mounted on said base casting. Each latch member 35 comprises two laterally spaced platelike sections 3x'536 joined at the outer ends by a transverse filler element 3'? which is formed integral with said plate sections. Each plate section has a depending undercut tooth member 38. The two teeth members 3S38 of each latch member are identical and are arranged in transverse alignment, thus forming, in effect, a double tooth. The base casting or plate 3 is provided with apair of vertically spaced, outstanding, top and bottom lugs Fill-39 on which the latch members 35--35 are mounted. Each latch member 35 straddles the corresponding lug 39. that it has the platelike sections fit--36 thereof embracing said lug. A pivot pin 40 extending through the lug and the inner end portions of the plate sections 3636 serves to pivotally sup port the latch member 35 for swinging more ment in a vertical plane. As shown in Figure 3, the teeth 38-38- of the two latch members 35-35 are adapted to interlock with the undercut portions 33-453 of the handle levers B--B to lock these levers against outward swinging movement. The base plate 34 is'i'urthe'r provided with a pair of vertically spaced, outstanding, projectadapted to be alignedto receive either a padlock or the usual car seal.
In opening the door, it is essential that the operating handlelevers BB be actuated in the proper sequence so that the left hand end of the door, as viewed in Figure l, is withdrawn from the opening before the other end. The latch means L precludes improper operation of these levers. As will be evident'upon reference to Figures 3 and 4, it is impossible to actuate the lower handle lever'B as long as the upper handle lever is in either of the positions shown in these figures because release of the lower latch 35 to unlock thelower handle lever B is blocked by the upper handle lever, the'latterin' the. position shown formingjan abutment preventing lift-f ing of the lower latch to a sufficient extent to clear the lower lever B. "It is further evident.
upon reference to Figure 4, which shows the upper latch member 35 lifted to clear'the upper handle lever B and the latter swung slightly outwardly away from the door, that lifting of the lower latch member 35 is still blocked by the upper handle lever B and that the latter mustb'e swung outwardly adistance to completely clear the outer end of the lowerlatch 35 before the latter can be lifted to a sufficient extent to clear the lower lever B.
The guide member K and the guide bracket J serve to properly position the'door so that the keeper engaging crank ends D-D and DD of the operating bars A-- A will properly register with and enter the cam slots of the keepers C-C and C--C while the door is being moved into the door opening. Such guide means is highly important in a sliding door construction for refrigerator cars as it is a diflicult matter to man ually position the door withsuflicient accuracy and while the door is being moved laterally into the door opening maintain the same in proper position vto assure accurate registration of the keeper engaging members with the cam slots of the keepers. t i
The guide bracket J is in the form of a casting secured to the car wall below the door opening, near the right hand end of said openingand immediately adjacent the lower edge of the same.
The casting J has a pair of spaced, outstandingprojections 4i242 thereon defining a laterally flaring opening 43 therebetween. The opening 43 is contracted at its inner end to provide a concave locking recess or seat 44.
The guide member K comprises a base plate 45 of substantially triangular outline having an outwardly onset, downwardly projecting arm' 46 that the arm 46 registers accurately with the con cave seat 44 when the door is tightly wedged into the door opening. As will be evident, the flaring arrangement of the guide opening of the bracket J provides for considerable latitude in positioning of the door in front of the door opening while assuring proper centering of the same as the arm 46 enters said opening and travels inwardlythereoi while the dooris being moved laterally toward the door opening. It is further pointed out that the outer ends of the projections 42-42 of the guide member K are rounded off, as indicated at ll-M, to facilitate registration of the arm 46 with the opening 43. T
i The operation of the improved mechanism illustrated in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, and 10, assuming the door to be in the closed position shown in Figure l, is as follows:
unlocked by lifting the upper latch 35 to disengage the samefromsaid operating lever, the latch being movedffrom the position shown in Figure 3 to that shown in Figure 4. As hereinbefore pointed out,'the arrangement of the handle levers BB and the latches til-35 precludes. operation of the lever B of the right hand bar A before operation of the lever B of the left hand bar A, inasmuch as the last named lever when in locked position serves as a lock for the lower latch 35.
After the lever B of the left hand bar Alias been unlocked, the same is swung outwardly away from the door, thereby rotating the corresponding bar A. to force the leading end of the door out of the door opening. The handle lever B of the right hand barA is then operated in a similar manner, the lower latch 35 being first lifted to release this lever, and the lever being then swung outwardly away from the door to rotate the right hand bar A. The bars A and A are thus actuated successively. As will be evident, the bars are rotated in opposite directions. Except for the fact that the bars AA are rotated in opposite directions, the operation thereof is the same in each instance. Rotation of either bar A efiectsmovement of the keeper engaging lugs l28-l28 of the crank arms 2il28 of said bar in the slots of the keepers C-C, bringing the lugs l28-l28 into engagement with the rear Walls of the slots of the keepers to cam the door I outwardly. During this action, the geared connections between the bar A and the corresponding The operating handle lever B of the left hand bar A is first supporting crank arms FF permit these arms to swing outwardly to follow the movement of the door, in properly timed relation, these arms acting at this time as guiding and supporting means for the door. As the door is thus moved outwardly, the arm of the member K is withdrawn from the guide bracket J. Continued rotation of the bar A, through the connecting gearing, positivelyeffects further rotation of the supporting crank members. E -F, thereby completely withdrawing the door from the corresponding end of the door opening and disengaging the keeper engaging members from the keepers and withdrawing the arm it from operative engagement with the guide bracket J. When the door reaches this last named position, the bar A will have been rotated through an arc of approximately and the operating lever 13 thereof will be disposed at the side of the shaft opposite to that occupied in Figure 1. the lever B to the door by engaging the handle end thereof with the corresponding latch bracket M. The latchbracket M being of well-known The attendant then locks However, it might be pointed out that to lock the handle lever B to the latch bracket, the lever is dropped to pendant position by swinging the same on its pivot, and is engaged in back of a shoulder on said bracket. Locking of the handle lever B to the bracket M holds the bar A against rotation and through the geared connections with the crank members F-F also locks the latter in fixed position. When both bars A--A have thus been operated and locked in position, the door will be held spaced from the side wall of the car a distance sufiicient to clear. said wall. To complete the door opening operation, the attendant slides the same along the tracks until it is entirely clear of the door opening.
In closing the door, the same is slid into posi tion in front of the door opening 2! and the actuating levers B B are unlocked to permit rotation of the bars A-A. The attendant then operates the bars AA successively, the right hand bar A. as shown in Figure 1, being the first actuated. Each of the oars A. is rotated in a direction reverse to that hereinbefore described, thereby also actuating the crank members FF geared thereto. In this operation, the crank members F-F swing the corresponding end of the door inwardly into the door opening 2! and bring the keeper engaging ends of the arms 28-468 of the 'bar A into position to enter the slots of the keepers C-C. As the bar A at the right hand end of the door, as viewed in Figure l, is the first operated, the arm 66 of the guide member K will be brought into position to enter the opening 43 of the bracket J. Further rotation of the bars A--A after the keeper engaging ends of the members hand end of the door force this end inwardly to tightly closed position, the arm 46 of the guide member K is guided inwardly of the flaring guide opening 43 of the bracket J, thus centering the door and gradually limiting endwise movement of the same more and more until the arm 43 is finally seated in the pocket 45. This seating of the arm 16 positively holds the door against endwise movement and assures proper operation of the keeper engaging members by accurately determining the position thereof in the cam slots of the keepers when the right hand end of the door forced home. As the keeper engaging bar A at the left hand end of the door is operated after the bar at the right hand end thereof. the locked condition of the guide member K with the bracket J will prevent longitudinal movement of the door during the time that the keeper engaging crank members of the first named bar are operatively engaged with the corresponding keepers to force the door to its finally closed position and thus keep the keeper engaging portions of the end members of said bar accurately positioned with respect to the cam slots of the keepers CC.
The operating levers BB being actuated successively in closing the door and the bar at the left hand end of the door being the first to be actuated, the lever B of the latter is locked to the door by its latch before the other lever is swung into position adjacent the door and locked by its latch. The lever B of the left hand bar is thus brought into position over the lower latch 35, as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3, to lock the latter against operation. With both operating levers latched, as set forth, the door is locked in tightly closed position.
Referring next to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 5, 6, and '7, the same involves a latch means having the characteristics of the latch means L hereinbefore described, serving to lock the operating levers B-B of the door construction.
The latch means illustrated in Figures 5, 6, and 7 is indicated broadly by P and includes a base plate 50 secured to the door 22 and carrying latches and 52. The base plate has a pivot lug 53 near the bottom end thereof on which the latch 5! is pivoted. Below the lug 53, the base plate is provided with an outstanding arm or lug 54 adapted to engage in an opening of the lower actuating lever B. The latch member 5!, the lower actuating lever B, and the arm or lug 54 are identical in design with the lower latch member 35, the lower arm B, and the lug 4| hereinbefore described'in connection with Figures 2, 3, and 4 and operate in a similar manner. The latch member 52 is mounted at the upper end of the plate 56 for rotation on a horizontal axis normal to the plane of the door 22. Below the latch member 52. the plate 50 has an outstanding lug or arm 55 adapted to engage within the opening of the upper actuating arm B. At its outer end, the lug 55 is provided with a locking recess or notch 55 adapted to cooperate with the latch member 52. provided with a radial arm 51 adapted to engage over the outer side of the upper actuating arm B when the latter is in position on the lug 55, as shown in Figure 6. The extremity of the arm 5! is adapted to seat in the notch or recess 56 of the lug '55, as shown, to lock said arm against outward displacement. The arm 5'! and the lug 55 are preferably provided with cooperating seal receiving openings 53 and 59 adapted to accommodate the ordinary car seal in the usual manner.
As will be evident, when the handle levers BB are locked in the position shown in Figure 6, it is impossible to actuate the lower lever prior to withdrawal and actuation of the upper lever because upward swinging movement of the latch 5! is blocked. To release the upper lever B, the latch 52 is rotated to clear said lever, as shown in Figure '7. After the upper lever B has been actuated, the lower latch may be readily lifted to release the lower lever B.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying "out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and mod ifications' that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a sliding door movable lengthwise of the car; of means for moving said door laterally into and out of the door opening; rotary means at opposite ends of said door for actuating said first named means; releasable locking means for holding one of said rotary means against movement; and means connected to the other rotary means for blocking release of said locking means.
2. In a door construction for refrigerator cars The latch member 52 is superimposed spaced relation; vertically spaced supports on the door for said levers; a latch member overhung and blocked against release by the upper lever when on said support, said latch member locking the lower lever against the door; and a latch member for locking the upper lever against the door.
12. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a door for closing said opening; of rotary means at opposite ends of the door for moving the same into and out of the door opening; a horizontally swingable operating lever connected to one of said rotary means for rotating the same, said lever being swingable into position against the door, said lever having an opening therethrough; a supporting lug on the door engageable through said opening when the lever is in said position against the door; a vertically swingable pivoted latch above said lug for locking the lever against the door; a second horizontally swingable operating lever connected to the other rotary means for rotating the same, said lever being swingable into position against the door, said lever having an opening therethrough; a second supporting lug on the door engageable through the opening of said second named lever when said lever is in said position against the door to position said lever in the path of vertical swinging movement ofsaid pivoted latch to lock the latter against release; and a second vertically swingable pivoted latch above said second named lug for locking the second named lever against said door.
13. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a door for closing said opening; of rotary means at opposite ends of the door for moving the same into and out of the door opening; a horizontally swingable operating lever connected to one of said rotary means for rotating the same, said lever being swingable into position against the door, said lever having an opening therethrough; a supporting lug on the door engageable through said opening when the lever is in said position against the door; a pivoted latch above said lug for locking said lever against the door, said latch being swingable in a vertical plane at right angles to the plane of the door; a second horizontally swingable operating lever connected to the other rotary means for rotating the same, said lever being swingable into position against the door, said lever having an opening therethrough; a second supporting lug on the door engageable through the opening of said second named lever when said lever is in said position against the door to position said lever in the path of vertical swinging movement of said pivoted latch to lock the latter against release, said second named lug projecting outwardly of said second named lever and having a locking shoulder on said projecting portion; and a rotary latch arm above said second named lug, said latch arm being rotatable in a plane parallel to the plane of the door and being swingable into overlying locking relation to said second named lever with the outer end of said arm engaged in back of the shoulder of said second named lug.
14, In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a door adapted to close said opening; of guide track means on said car; carrier means slidingly guided on said guide track means; means for moving said door to open or close the same, including a manually actuated operating member movably mounted on the door, fixed keeper means with respect to which the carrier means is movable, movable means supporting the door on said carrier means, means for actuating said movable means by operation of said member to move said door either into or out of the door opening, and means on said operating member engageable with said keeper means for either prying the door open or forcing the same tightly closed; and cooperating centering means on the car and door comprising a fixed guide member on the car, and an engaging fixed guide member on the door.
15. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a door adapted to close said opening; of guide track means on said car; carrier means slidingly guided. on said guide track means; means for moving said door to open or close the same, including a manually actuated operating member movably mounted on the door, fixed keeper means with respect to which the carrier means is movable, movable means supporting the door on said carrier means, means for actuating said movable means by operation of said member to move said door either into or out of the door opening, and means on said operating member engageable with said keeper means for either prying the door open or forcing the same tightly closed; and cooperating interengageable guide members on said car and door for restricting longitudinal movement of the door while being moved into the door opening.
16. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a door adapted to close said opening; of guide track means on said oar; carrier means slidingly guided on said guide track means; means for moving said door to open or close the same, including a manually actuated operating member movably mounted on the door, fixed keeper means with respect to which the carrier means is movable, movable means supporting the door on said carrier means, means for actuating said movable means by operation of said member to move said door either into or out of the door opening, and means on said operating member engageable with said keeper means for either prying the door open or forcing the same tightly closed; a fixed guide member on the car having a laterally flaring opening; and a guide lug on said door engageable within said opening.
17. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening. the combination with a door adapted to close said opening; of guide track means on said car; carrier means slidinely guided on said guide track means; means for moving said door to open or close the same, including a manually actuated operating member movably mounted on the door, fixed keeper means with respect to which the carrier means is movable, movable means supporting the door on said carrier means, means for actuating said movable means by operation of said member to move said door either into or out of the door opening, and means on said operating member engageable with said keeper means for either prying the door open or forcing the same tightly closed; a fixed guide member on the car having a laterally outwardly flaring guideway; and a guide lug on said door engageable within said guideway.
18. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with .a door opening, the combination with a door adapted to close said opening; of guide track means on said car; carrier means slidingly guided on said guide means for actuating'said movable means by operation of said member to move said door either into or out of the door opening, and means on said operating member engageable with said keeper means for either prying the door open or forcing the same tightly closed; a fixed guide on the car having a laterally outwardly flaring guideway; a seat at the inner end of said guideway; and a lug on said door guided in said way when the door is moved into said opening, and adapted to register with said seat to hold the door against endwise, movement.
19. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a door adapted to close said opening; of guide track means on said car; carrier means slidingly guided on said track means; means for moving said door to open or close the same including a manually actuated operating member movably mounted on said door, fixed keeper means with respect to which said carrier means is movable, keeper engaging means on said operating member engageable with said keeper means for either forcing said door tightly closed or prying the same partly open, movable means supporting the door on said carrier means for movement toward and away from the door opening, means for transmitting motion from said operating member to said movable means for actuating the latter to move said door either into the door opening to engage said keeper engaging means with the fixed'keeper means or out of the door opening to disengage said keeper engaging means from said fixed keeper means; and means for restricting endwise movement of the door while the.
keeper engaging means is engaged with said fixed keeper means including cooperating interengaging fixed guides on the car and door.
20. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a door adapted to close said opening; of guide track means on said car carrier means slidingly guided on said track means; means for moving said door to open or close the same including a manually actuated operating member movably mounted on said door, fixed keeper means with respect to which said carrier means is movable, keeper engaging means on said operating member engageable with said keeper means for either forcing said door tightly closed or pryingvthe same partly open, movable means supporting the door on said carrier means for movement toward and away from the door opening, means for transmitting motion from said operating member to said movable means for actuating the latter to
