This invention relates to improvements in refrigerator car doors.
One object of the invention is to provide a door construction for refrigerator cars comprising a single sliding door member for closing the usual door opening, and power multiplying operating means for either forcing the door tightly closed or prying the same partly open, wherein the door is movably mounted in such a manner that the attendant may either close the door by first registering the door with the door opening, then manually pushing the door into the opening, and iinally forcing the same tightly closed by actuation of the power multiplying operating means in one direction, or open the door by rst actuating the power multiplying operating means in a reverse direction to pry the door partly open, then manually pulling the door out of the door opening, and finally sliding the same clear of said opening.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide in a construction of the character set forth in the preceding paragraph simple and efcient means in the form of swingable hinge arms, for supporting the door for movement toward and away from the side of the car, the arms being operatively connected to the power multiplying operating means in such a manner that the arms will be actuated during the opening and closing operation of said means.
Another ob-ject of the invention is to provide in a door construction of the character specified power multiplying operating means which is mounted on the door and has keeper engaging means cooperating with fixed keeper means on the car Wall adjacent tosaid opening, wherein the power multiplying means is also .connected to hinge arms by which the door is movably supported to actuate the hinge arms while the keeper engaging means is operatively engaged with the keeper means to either force the door tightly closed or pry the same open.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a door construction for refrigerator cars, comprising a sliding door member for closing the door opening of a car, wherein simple and efficient keeper engaging operating means is provided for either forcing the door tightly closed or prying the same partly open, the operating means including hinge arms swingingly supporting the door, the arms being connected to the operating means in such a manner that the door may be manually swung on said arms either toward or away from the door opening to move the door into or to remove it from the door open- (Cl. .Z0-23) ing while the keeper engaging means is disengaged from the cooperating keeper means andv is inoperative to forcibly close or open the door.
A further .object of the invention is to provide a mechanism of the character set forth in the preceding paragraph, so arranged and designed that the projection of the operating parts thereon will not exceed certain prescribed limits so that the mechanism will clear the usual loading' platform structure and all other obstructions encountered in standard railway practice.
Other objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following.
In the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevational View, partly` broken away, of the side wall of a refrigerator car, illustrating my improvements in connection therewith, said view showing the door closed. Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, partly broken away, on an enlarged scale, corresponding substantially to the line 2 2 of Figure 1, but showing the door withdrawn from the door opening. Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view, partly broken away, on an enlarged scale, corresponding substantially to the line 3-3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is a broken, vertical sectional View, on an enlarged scale, corresponding substantially to the line 4-4 of Figure l. Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view, on an enlarged scale, partly broken away, corresponding substantially to the line 5-5 of Figure 1. Figures 6, '7, and 8 are views similar to Figure 5, illustrating the structure at the left hand end of said Figure 5 and showing the parts. in three different operating positions.

In carrying out my invention I provide top and bottom tracks A--A, carriers B-B and B--B cooperating with the top and bottom tracks A-A; pairs of top and bottom combined supporting and journal brackets C-C and C-C; pairs of top and bottom crank members D-D and D-D; a vertically disposed operating bar or shaft E; end members F-F on said bar; top and bottom keepers G-G; top and bottom connecting rods or bars I-I--H operatively joining the operating bar E to the crank members D-D and D-D; a handle lever J on the bar E; a latch member K for holding said lever in one position; and a locking member M for holding the lever in another position.
The tracks A-A, which extend lengthwise of the side wall of the car, are located above and' below the door opening I I. rIhe two tracks A-A are reversely arranged, that is, the guideway of the upper track faces downwardly while that of the lower track faces upwardly. Each track A comprises a flat bar I3, which extends lengthwise of the car and is disposed in a vertical plane, and a bar I4 comprising a horizontally disposed central section I5 and oppositely extending, vertically disposed flanges IS and I 'I at the inner and outer sides of the horizontal section I5. The flange I1 i's spaced from the corresponding po-rtion of the bar I3 so as to provide a guideway between said flange I7 and the bar I3. The ange I6 bears directly on the bar I3, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4. Each track A is secured to the side Walls of the car by suitable securing elements, such as bolts or rivets, extending through the wall III, the bar I3, and the flange I6 of the bar I4.
The carriers B-B and B-B are in the form of blocks which are guided within the ways ofv the tracks A-A. Each carrier block B is provided with a vertically disposed central bearing opening I8, which is adapted to receive a crank pin on one of the crank members D. The carrier blocks B-B, which cooperate with the bottom track A, are provided with anti-friction rollers I S-I 9, which are disposed within suitable pockets provided in the blocks, The carriers B--B which cooperate with the top track A need not be provided with anti-friction rollers, and are preferably in the form of plain blocks as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The journal brackets C-C and C-C are arranged in pairs at the top and bottom of the door I2. Each bracket C comprises a platelike section 20, which bears directly on the outer surface of the door I2, and a cap section 2 I, which is secured to the outer side of the plate section 20. The cap plate 2l is of lesser height than the plate 20, as clearly shown in Figure 1, and the plate 2U is provided with a horizontally disposed, outwardly projecting flange 22 at the inner end, which is spaced from the inner end of the cap 2|. The plate 20 and the cooperating cap 2| have registering part bearing openings therein which form a cylindrical bearing opening 23 when the parts are assembled.
The operating shaft E. is in the form of a ver tically disposed' bar or shaft of substantially rectangular cross-section and is carried by the door I2. The keeper engaging members F-F are in the form of end members on the bar E'. Each member F comprises a cylindrical shaft section 24 having a crank arm 25 at the outer end and a socket portion 2S at the inner end. The socket portion 26 has an opening 2l of substantially rectangular cross-section within which the corresponding end of the rectangular bar E is located. Each end member F is xed to the bar E by means of rivets 28-28, or other similar securing elements, extending through the side walls of the socket 2'I and the bar E. The crank arm 25 of each end member F i's provided with a crank pin 29 at the outer end thereof which cooperates with the corresponding keeper G.
The keepers G-G, which` are mounted on the side wall of the car adjacent to the top and bottom ends of the door opening I I, are in the form of castings which also serve as stop members -for the carriers B-B at the left hand end of the door, as shown in Figure 1. Each casting G comprises a portion 3B of U-shaped cross-section, which extends into the guideway between the opposed walls of the corresponding track A. At
the right hand, as shown in Figure l, the portion 30 of the casting has a vertical abutment wall 3| which joins the opposed walls and botto-m wall of the U-shaped section, thereby providing a stop shoulder with which the corresponding carrier B i's adapted to engage to limit the movement of said carrier, toward the left, as viewed in Figure 1. On an upstanding portion of the lower casting G and on a depending portion of the up per casting G are formed the keeper members proper 32. Each keeper member 32 is provided with a cam slot 33, which is inclined outwardly away from the door opening II and the car wall I0, as clearly shown in Figures 3, 5, 6, '7, and 8. The slots 33-33 of the keepers G-G receive the crank pins 29-29 of thev end members F-F during the initial opening and nal closing operations of the door, as hereinafter more fully pointed out.
The door I2 is supported by the top and bottom crank members D-D, which are journaled within the corresponding brackets C--C and C-C. Each crank member D comprises a cylindrical shaft section 34 and crank arms 35 and 36 on the inner and outer ends of the shaft section. The crank arm 36, which is at the outer end, is considerably longer than the inner crank arm 35^and has a crank pin 3l at the outer end thereof, which is rotatably journaled in the bearing opening I8 of the corresponding carrier B. The cylindrical shaft section 34 of each crank member D is journaled within the bearing opening 23. of, the corresponding bracket C. The inner crank arm 35 of each crank member D is provided with a crank pin 38 at the outer end thereof, which is connected to the corresponding connecting rod or bar H, as hereinafter pointed out. The crank members D-D andv D--D serve to support the door I2 for movement toward and away from the door opening II and the crank arms 36-36 and 33-35 of said crank members actually form pivoted sup-porting arms or hinge members which swing at opposite ends on the door and the corresponding carrier B.
The top and bottom connecting rods or bars H-H serve to connect each pair of crank members D-D to the operating bar E. Each bar H is provided with vertically disposed, spaced bearing openings 39-39 which receive the crank pins 38-38 of the corresponding pair of crank members D-D. As clearly shown in Figures l and 2, each bar H is accommodated between the crank arm 35 of the corresponding crank member D and the flange 22 of the bracket C on which said crank member is journaled. As will be evident, the bars H-H are thus accurately guided for reciprocating movement. At the left hand end, each bar H is provided with an enlarged bearing head 40 which has a vertically disposed bearing opening 4I within which the shaft section 24 of. the corresponding end member F of the shaft or bar E is rotatably journaled. The bearing opening 4I is formed by partial bearing sections, one section of which is formed directly on the bar H and the other section of which is formed on a cap member 42 having side arms which embrace the end portion of the bar H. As will be evident, the bar E is connected to the bars H--H in such a manner that bodily movement of the bar E will cause reciprocation of the bars H-H and thereby effect oscillation of the crank members D-D.
The operating shaft or bar E is rotated by means of the lever J, which is pivoted to the lower end member F of the operating shaft E. As most clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3, the lower end member E is provided with an outstanding lug 43 with which the forked end portion 44 of the lever J is engaged. The lever is supported for pivotal movement by the pin 45, which extends through the forked section 44 and the lug 43.
The latch member K, which is mounted on the door I2, comprises a back plate 46 having a pair of spaced, outstanding flanges 41-41 at the lower end thereof, between which the handle end of the lever J may be engaged. A vertically disposed, sliding latch element 48 is vertically guided on the plate 46 by means of a slot and pin connection comprising a vertical slot 49 in the element 48 and a bolt 5I), which extends through said slot and into the door I2. At the lower end, the sliding element 48 is provided with a depending pin 5| which engages through vertically aligned openings 52-52 in the flanges I1-41 and is also adapted to engage through an opening 53 in the handle end of the lever arm J so as to lock said arm in the dotted line position shown in Figure 1.
The locking member M, which is mounted on the side wall of the car adjacent to the door opening I I, as clearly shown in Figure 1, is of the usual type, having a pivoted locking plate which engages in front of the lever J. The swinging latch member and a flange on the lever J are provided with aligned openings which receive the ordinary car seal.
The operation of my improved mechanism, assuming the door to be in closed position, as illustrated in Figures l, 3, 4, and 5, is as follows in opening the door:
The operating lever J is rst disengaged from the locking member M and is then swung outwardly away from the car wall I Il, thereby rotating the shaft E and causing movement of the crank pins 29-29 in the slots 33-33 of the keepiers G-G. Due to the camming action of the crank pins 29-29 in the slots 33-33, the operating shaft E will be displaced outwardly away from the side wall I of the car. Inasmuch as the ends of the shaft E are journaled in the bearing heads 48 of the bars IIH, the bodily movement of the shaft E will cause a corresponding reciprocating movement of the bars I-I-I-I. The movement of the bars H-I-I will be imparted to the crank members D-D and D-D through' the connecting crank arms 35-35 and 35-35, thereby oscillating the crank members D-D and D-D, causing swinging movement of the crank arms 36-36 and 36-36. The movement imparted to the crank members D-D and D-D will cause the door to be forced outwardly from the position shown in Figure to that illustrated in Figure 6. Upon further rotation of the shaft E, the camming action between the crank members thereof and the keepers G-G will cause the door to be forced outwardly to the position shown in Figure 8. In this position, the crank pins 2.9-29 entirely clear the cam slots 33-33 of the keepers G-G, thereby permitting attendant to pull the door outwardly to the position shown in Figure 7. When the door assumes this position, the operating lever J will be in the dotted line position shown in Figure 1. The attendant then locks the lever to the door by engaging the sliding latch pin 5| through the openings of the flanges 41-41 of the latch member K and the opening in the handle of the lever J. When the parts are locked in this position, the door will be held against any further movement with respect to the carriers B-B and B-B and the attendant may slide the door lengthwise of the car along the tracks A-A, thereby moving the door entire ly clear of the door opening I I. In the door clos-k ing operation, the door is slid along the tracks A-A so as to register the same with the door opening I I, as sho-wn in Figure '7. The engagement of the carriers B-B at the left hand end of the door, as viewed in Figure 1, with the stop faces of the keeper castings G-G determines the position of the door, as shown in Figure '7. In order to move the door into the door opening II, the attendant first unlocks the lever -J by raising the sliding latch element of the latch member K. When the lever J has been thus un locked, it is free to swing outwardly with respect to the door and further permits swinging movement of the crank or hinge arms 36 of the crank members D. When the lever J has been thus unlocked and the door is in the position shown in Figure 7, the attendant pushes the door inwardly toward the side wall of the car, thereby causing the door to swing on the arms 36-36 and 36-36 of the door and bringing the door to the position shown in Figure 8. When the door has assumed the position shown in Figure 8, the crank pins 29-29 of the end members of the operating shaft E are in position to enter the keeper slots 33-33 and rotation of the shaft E will cause camming action of the crank pins 29-29 in the slots 33-33, thereby forcibly pulling the shaft E inwardly toward the side wall of the car and causing reciprocation of the bars or rods III-I, thereby imparting oscillating movement to the crank members D-D and causing the door to be forcibly moved into the door opening, the door first assuming the position shown in Figure 6 and then that shown in Figure 5. In this connection it is pointed out that the attendant need not rotate the operating b-ar E when the parts assume the position shown in Figure 8. during the door closing operation, but may force the door further inwardly to the position shown in Figure 6 by pushing against the same. This pushing action will force the crank pins 29-29 into the cam slots 33-33 of the keepers G-G, thereby causing the camming action and rotation of the operating shaft E to the position shown in Figure 6. It is evident that during this action the actuating lever J is free to swing outwardly away from the door. After the parts .have assumed the position shown in Figure 6, rotation of the shaft E by the attendant will cause the parts to assume the position shown in Figure 5, the door being forced tightly closed in the manner hereinbefore described.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope'of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
l. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; top and bottom swinging supporting arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and at the other end on one of said carriers; bars connected to said arms for swinging the same to close or open said door; an operating member connected to the bars; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and means fixed on said operating member having camming engagement with the keeper means for moving said bars to swing said arms to force the door into the door opening when said actuating member is operated in one direction and pry said door open when the actuating member is operated in a reverse direction.
2. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening; the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; top and bottom carriers guided on said tracks; a set of top and a set of bottom swinging supporting arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and at the other end on one of said carriers; a bar connecting each set of arms for swinging said set of arms in unison to close or open the door; an operating member connected to said bars and supported entirely by said bars; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and means on said operating member having camming engagement with the keeper means for moving said bar to swing said arms to force the door into said opening when said actuating member is operated in one direction and to pry said door open when the actuating member is operated in a reverse direction.
3. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; top and bottom swinging supporting arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and at the other end on one of said carriers; bars connected to said arms for swinging the same to close or open said door; a rotatable operating shaft journaled in said bars; fixed keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and means on said l rotary shaft having camming engagement with the keeper means when said shaft is rotated, for moving said shaft relatively to the keeper to reciprocate said bars and swing said arms to effect either forcible opening or closing of the door.
4. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; top and bottom carriers guided on said tracks; a set of top and a set of bottom swinging supporting arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and at the other end on one of said carriers; a bar connecting each set of arms for swinging said set of arms in unison to close or open the door; a rotatable operating shaft journaled in said bars for rotation about the longitudinal a-Xis of said shaft; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and means fixed on said rotary shaft, eccentric to the axis thereof having camming engagement with the keeper means when said shaft is rotated for moving said shaft relatively to the keeper to reciprocate said bars and swing said arms to effect either other end on one of said carriers; bars connected to said arms for swinging the sameV to either close or open said door; a rotary shaft journaled to said bars; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and means fixed on said rotary shaft, engageable with the keeper means for effecting displacement of said shaft and the connected bars when said shaft is rotated whilev said means thereof is engaged with the keeper means to actuate said bars and -swing said arms.
6. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; top and bottom carriers guided on said tracks; a set of top and a set of bottom swinging arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and at the other end on one of said carriers; a barv connecting the arms of' each set for swinging the same in unison to close or open the door; a rotary operating shaft journaled in said bars; fixed keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and cooperating interengaging means on said shaft and keeper means for causing displacement of the shaft when rotated and engaged with the keeper means, to effect movement of said bars and swinging movement of said arms.
7. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; movable top and bottom supporting means connecting the door to the carriers for lateral displacement toward and away from the door opening; an operating member bodily movable with respect to the door; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; means on said operating member having camming engagement with the keeper means for bodily moving said operating member with respect to the keeper means and door; and means connecting said operating member with said supporting means for transmitting said movement thereof to the supporting means to displace the door with respect to the door openlng.
8. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; top and bottom carriers guided o-n said tracks; a set of top and a set of bottom movable supporting members connecting the door to they carriers for lateral displacement toward `and away from the door opening; an operating member bodily movable with respect to the door; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; means on said operating member having camming engagement with the keeper means for bodily moving said operating member; and means operatively connecting said operating member with said supporting means for transmitting movement to the supporting means to displace the door with respect to the door open- 9. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks;

10. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said Wall member above and below said door opening; top and bottom carriers guided on said tracks; a set of top and a set of bottom swinging supporting arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and at the other end on one of said carriers; a rotatable operating shaft bodily movable with respect to the door; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; means on said shaft and rigid therewith having camming engagement with the keeper means to effect bodily movement of said shaft 'when rotated while engaged with said keeper means; and means for transmitting movement from the shaft to said arms to swing the same.
11. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said Wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; movable means at the top and bottom of the door connecting the door to the carriers and guiding the door for movement toward and away from said door opening; a rotatable operating shaft; fixed keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; cooperating interengaging means on said rotary shaft and keeper means for effecting displacement of said shaft when said shaft is rotated while engaged with the keeper means; and means for transmitting said movement of the shaft to said movable connecting means for displacing the door with respect to the door opening.
12. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; top and bottom carriers guided on said tracks; a set of top and a set of bottom swinging arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door .and at the other end on one of said carriers; a bar connecting each set of arms for swinging said arms in unison to close or open the door; a rotatable operating shaft journaled on said bars and bodily movable with said bars; slotted keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; anda crank member on said shaft engageable with the slotted keeper means.
13. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; top and bottom swinging supporting arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and at the other end on one of said carriers; bars connected to said .arms for swinging the same to close or open said door; a rotatable operating shaft journaled on said bars and bodily movable with said bars; slotted keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; .and a crank member on said shaft, said crank member having a crank pin thereon engageable with the slotted keeper means.
14. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; top and bottom swinging supporting arms, each arm being journaled at one end on the door and .at the other end on one of said carriers; bars connected to said arms for swinging the same to either close or open the door; a rotary operating shaft journaled to said bars for rotation about its longitudinal axis; top and bottom keepers on the car adjacent to said door opening, each keeper having a cam slot therein; and crank arms on opposite ends of said rotary operating shaft, said arms having pins at the outer ends thereof engageable within the slots of the keepers.
15. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided' on said tracks; top and bottom supporting crank members, each crank member comprising a shaft portion journaled on the door, and crank arms on the inner and outer ends of said shaft portion, the outer crank arm of each crank member being pivoted on one of said carriers; bars connected to the free ends of the inner crank arms of said members; an operating member connected to the bars; xed keeper 1 means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and means on said operating member having camming engagement with the keeper means for moving said bars to swing said crank members to force the door into the door opening when said operating member is operated in one direction and to pry said door open when the operating member is operated in a reverse direction.
16. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; top and bottom supporting crank members, each crank member comprising a shaft portion journaled on the door, and crank arms on the inner and outer ends of said shaft portion, the outer crank arm of each crank member being pivoted on one of said carriers; bars connected to the inner crank arms of said members; a rotary shaft carried by said bar and journaled therein; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; and crank means on said shaft engageable with the keeper means for effecting movement of said shaft when the latter is rotated while the crank means is in engagement with the keeper means.

In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; a pair of top and a pair of bottom supporting crank members, each crank member comprising a vertical shaft portion journaled on the door, and crank arms on the` inner and outer ends of said shaft portion, the outer crank arms of said members having their outer ends swiveled on said carriers; top and bottom connecting bars having the outer ends of said inner crank arms of said top` and bottom pairs of members pivotally connected thereto, said bars having vertically aligned journal openings; a vertically disposed operating shaft rotatably supported at its opposite ends in said aligned openings; top and bottom keepers on the car adjacent to said door opening, each keeper having a cam slot; and crank arms on opposite ends of said shaft, said arms having crank pins at their outer ends engageable within the slots of the keepers.

In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; xed keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; means movably supporting said door on said carriers and guiding said door respectively toward and away from said door opening, when the door is pushed inwardly or pulled outwardly; an operating bar carried by said door and operatively connected to said movable door supporting means; means on said bar engageable with the keeper means when the door is displaced inward- 1y toward the door opening to a predetermined extent; means for actuating said bar while engaged with the keeper means to bodily move said bar with respect to the keeper means to actuate said movable supporting means to either force the door tightly closed or pry the same open.
19. In a door construction for refrigerator cars having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers lslidably guided on said tracks; keeper means on the car adjacent to said door opening; swinging arms movably supporting said door on said carriers and guiding said door toward and away from said door opening when the door is pushed inwardly or pulled outwardly; a
rotary operating shaft bodily movable with respect to said door; movable bars in which said shaft is journaledconnecting said shaft to the swinging arms for imparting bodily movement of said shaft to said arms to swing the latter; crank means on said shaft engageable with the keeper means when the door is displaced inwardly toward the door opening to a predetermined extent; means for rotating said shaft in reverse directions while the crank means thereof is engaged with the keeper means, thereby effecting bodily movement of the shaft to actuate said bars and swing said arms to force said door tightly closed or pry the same open.

In a door construction for refrigerator cars 'i having a wall member provided with a door opening, the combination with a single door adapted to close said opening; of guide tracks on said wall member above and below said door opening; carriers slidably guided on said tracks; top and bottom keeper members o-n the car adjacent to said door opening, each keeper member having a cam slot therein; top and bottom pairs of crank members on the door, each crank member comprising a vertical shaft section journaled on the door, and crank arms at the inner and outer ends of said shaft section, said outer crank arms having their outer ends pivoted on said carrier for movably supporting said door on the carriers and guiding the door respectively into and out of said door opening when the door is pushed inwardly or pulled outwardly; top and bottom connecting bars to which the outer ends of the inner crank arms are pivoted; a vertically disposed operating shaft extending through said top and bottom bars and rotatably journaled thereon; crank arms on opposite ends of said rotary shaft engageable with the slots of the keepers when the door is displaced inwardly toward the door opening to a kpredetermined extent; and means for rotating tightly closed or pry the same open.
