  • This new mode of painting consists in obtaining the qualities of fresco by using an absorbent cloth and a combination of pure dyes and. water pigments. It is done the following way: I take 15 an absorbent white solid cloth, such as plush. The design is made on the cloth with a soft lead pencil; then with oX-hair brushes an application is made of permanent and pure dyes over the whole design. Then a second coat of water pigments, such as show card colors or poster colors is added over the whole design; the manner of proceeding is by successive washes. But instead of being in the wall, as the 15th century frescos, it is in the cloth.

1 Claim.
This new mode of painting consists in obtaining the qualities of fresco by using an absorbent cloth and a combination of pure dyes and. water pigments. It is done the following way: I take 15 an absorbent white solid cloth, such as plush. The design is made on the cloth with a soft lead pencil; then with oX-hair brushes an application is made of permanent and pure dyes over the whole design. The color sinks in With- .u out charging the cloth. Then a second coat of water pigments, such as show card colors or poster colors is added over the whole design; the manner of proceeding is by successive washes. The result is astounding: all the big qualities 2 of fresco, without its diificulties; for we can work as long as we please to perfect the details Without harm to the picture, whereas fresco on the wall is a very bad thing to manage, as everything has to "be done while the wall is wet. We
25 get the same depth and richness as oil, the
same transparency as water-color, and the softness of pastel; for the cloth remains smooth. A wonderful coloring, with the variety of color of a Japanese print; the color remains very 30 bright without harshness. Contrasting values from pure white to pure black can be obtained. No danger of cracking or of darkening. A dead finish with a beautiful soft surface. It is more solid than oil. The execution is more rapid, easier, and much more economical than oil. No varnish is necessary. The details stand out as clear and precise as any oil. Especially fit for Work on a large scale. It beats all other modes of painting for imitation of Nature.
With this formula, a Gobelin or wall-hanging can be hand-painted, and it would be more beautiful than the woven ones, since it would have the depth of oil. A modern way of painting in fresco in houses and public buildings; for
instead of sticking a canvas painted in oils on the wall, this cloth with the big qualities of fresco could replace it. Infinite possibilities for decoration and painting in houses and public buildings.
I claim:
The new mode of painting, consisting in mak- :0 ing a complete detailed. design of a picture or decoration on an absorbent cloth, such as plush with a writing "medium, such as lead pencil; in applying a coat of pure dyes over the cloth with a brush, carefully respecting the details and the 35 values of the design; and lastly in applying with a brush a coat of water color pigments, such as poster colors or show card colors all over the picture or decoration.
