ATTORNEY having my'invention incorporated therein;
' disk for the certifying printing mechanism; and Fig.- 5 is an end elevational view of thestruc- Patented Mar. 12, 1940 [REGISTER William G. Orth, Dayton, Ohio, assignor, by mesne assignments, to Central National Bank f or Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio Application January 14, 1936, Serial No; 59,108
23 Claims. c1; 101'-66) Heretofore means have been known whereby the printing mechanism ofa register may be operated or not operated at the will of the operator by manipulating an on and off lever such as shown, for instance, in the application of Albert S. Wheelbarger andWilliam G. Orth, Serial No. 752,677, filed November 12, 1934. It
hasalso heretofore been proposed to provide I means whereby when the clerks and transaction keys or lever are in certain predetermined positions the machine will issue a ticket but if eitherthe clerks-or the transaction lever or keys move from the said certain position the ticket mechanism will automatically be rendered inoperative and the certifying mechanismwill automatically be rendered operative, such as shown in the application of Albert S. Wheelbarger and William G. Orth,"Serial No. 34,120, filed August 1,
1935. I now propose 'toprovide ashutter which."
will normally close theentrance to the certifying mechanism and means whereby when the shutter closes the entrance the ticket printing mecha nism will be operated but when the'shutter-is,
raised so that a card could be inserted into the certifying mechanism the ticket printing mechanism would be" rendered inoperative and the certifying mechanism would be rendered operative. l
The object of the invention is'to automatically control the operating means for. the ticket printing mechanism and the certifying mechanism and this control is fool-proof so that it is im possible toissue a ticket when a card is to be certified andthe ticket issuing mechanism is automatically rendered operative-when there is.
no card to be certified.

Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the driving ture shown in Fig. 2 with the associated parts.
As shown in Patent 1,977,016, the'printing carrier is oscillated each time the machine is op-' erated so as to bring the platens carried thereby into contact with the type wheels 53, it being" understood, of course, that the ticket strip paper 'passes over the platen I and a strip-of record paper passes .over the platen 2, each of which platensare carried by the printing carrier. 44. As shown in the said patent, the ticket strip 9, after ,receiving the printed impression, passes .gbeneatha feed roller .8 which. is secured-tea -.pinion E and above a feed roller I!) so that when the pinion 6 is rotated anti-clockwise as viewed 1 machine after it has received the printed impression. Record paper 3 passes over the record platen 2 and'a printed impression is made thereon each time the platen 2 is oscillated into contact with the'type wheels 53. I v 1 I have'provided a fixed table 4 extending from the front to the back of the register and extending outside of the register so that a certifying card could 'be placed thereon there being, of
course, a' slot in the casingof the register through which the certifying card could be inserted. Normally closing this slot is a shutter f5 provided with an upstanding arm "I which is provided with i a slot ll through which extends a guide pin it? carried by the register. Slots. l3 are also provided i 1 in Fig. 1 the ticket strip Will be fed out of'the in the arm and through these slots extend studs l4 carried by a rod l5 which is provided with a guide slot l6 through which extend fixed studs H. The arm 1 is'also provided witha pin it on which is suspended a spring. is which has its other end attached to the uppermost one-of the studs 14. An operators handle Eli'fis integral with the arm land extends to the outside of the vmachine so as, to be readily accessible by the operator. A spring M is attached to a stud 22,
- which spring has its oppositeend connected with a fixed stud23 so that'thisv spring tends to depress the 'rod I5 andthroughthe spring I!) to depress the shutter 5. The upper end of the rod I5 is providedwith a slot 24 which receives 'a'pin' 25 carried by an arm 26 of a-rod. 21.
slide bar 3|. The slide bar 3i is'provided with i i I Also secured to this rod is a lever 28 which has its lowerend lyingbetween studs Hand 36 carried by .a
slots 32 and 33. A stud 34 extends through the 1 slot 33 and this 'stud is carried by a lever 35 rotatably mounted'on a shaft 355, The lever 35 is provided with an arm 31 which has an overturned lug .38 which may be received withina slot 39 in a disk 40 secured ,to'the feed roller- 8.
The lever 35 is also provided-with an arm H which carriesa shaft 42 on which is mounted a pinion. 43,-which pinion when operated by the mechanism shown in said Patent 1,977,016 would,
of course, feed out the ticket.strip 9 after it has received the printed, impression-from the platen, I
I. A conventional aligning pawl 46 is provided for the pinion 43.
A stud 41 projects through the slot 32 inthe slide bar 3|, which stud is carried by a plate 48 pivoted on a shaft 49. The plate 48 has an overturned flange 50 which overlies the slide bar 3i.
An arm 5| pivoted on a shaft 52 normally abuts 1 against the flange 50-and prevents the plate 48 being rotatedin an anti-clockwise direction but the arm 5| is provided with a cam surface 54 so that when-the slide bar 3 l, is moved tothe left sending it."-

plate tells provided with box cam which receives a roller G6 carried by a lever ill? mount on a shaft which lever 91 has a downwardly ling arni which-operates a with notches s i an arm ll of a lever '12 platen H pivoted on a shaft it! so as to engage the certifying strip on the table #7. with the type wheels 1812. Obviously the platen would be operated as many times as there are lobes on the box cam 95.
Also secured to the shutter :3 is a link it? connected to a lever 594, which lever is mounted on a shaft W5. This lever is provided with a stud 88 which normally is received within a notch it? in the'plate 33. This mechanism serves as additional 'safe-guard to prevent the plate 36 being rotated when it should not be rotated and yet provides mechanism to free the plate 85 when it should be operated.
A motor bar 168 should be pressed inwardly ,when the machine is to be operated electrically and this bar is provided with a cam surface 139 terminating in a surface HG extending in the same length-wise direction as the motor bar I08. Resting on this motor bar is a roller HI carried by a stud H2 mounted on a lever H3 pivoted on a shaft H6. This lever H3 is provided with a stud l 5'5 on which is mounted a roller 2 l6 adapted to contact either the cam surface H! or the cam surface H8 of a depending arni H9 carried by the slide bar 3|.
In operation, if no certifying card is inserted in the machine, that is, if the handle is not raised, the machine will print on the detail strip 3 and on the ticket strip 3 and will issue a ticket. For such an operation the parts are in the position shown in the drawings in which it will be noted that the plate '13 is in a position to engage the arm H and elevate the platen l and also the pinion 33 is in engagement with the pinion 5 so that the ticket will be both printed and issued. When the motor bar :83 is pushed inwardly the roller H8 will engage the cam surface ill of the slide bar so as to insure that the left-hand end of the slot 3 will engage the pin M and hold the pinion 43 in engagement with the pinion 6.
When, however, it is desired to certify the operator pulls upwardly on the handle 2% and inserts the certifying strip into the machine on the table- 5. The certifying slip limits the de pression of the shutter When the operator pulls upwardly on the handle 25 he elevates the arm l and the spring lil pulls upwardly on the upper stud 2 thereby elevating the rod l5. If
any obstruction were encountered, that is, if the parts were a little still so that the tension of the spring were insufiicient to overcome the inertia, the lower portion of the slots i3 would engage the studs It and positively raise the rod i5 which would rotate th arm 26 and lever 28 clockwise as viewed in Fig. 3 and anti-clockwise as viewed in Fig. 2 so that the lever 28 would engage the stud 29 and shift the slide bar 3! to the left as viewed in Figs. 1 and so that the cam surface lit would be above the roller HE. If now the motor bar I88 is depressed the roller Hf) would engage the earn suriace H8 and shift the slide bar all as far as possible to the left as viewed in said figures, so that the slide bar would engage the cam surface 5-3 and 1' se the arm out or engagement with the flange and the plate 48 would be shifted counter-clockwise so as to disengage the pawl 59 from the notch 53 and to engage it in the notch 57. This movement of the plate 38 would lower the link 62 and also lower the link 66 so as to rotate the lever 68 clockwise and move the plate '50 out of a position where it might be engaged by the arm ll so that the lever 2'2 would not raise the platen 1 into engagement with the'type wheels 53. This lowering of the link 62 would also rotate the arm 64 clockwise as viewed in Fig. 1, thereby rotating the lever anti-clockwise as viewed in Fig. 2 and through the roller and slot connection shown in Fig.2 would rotate the levers l9 and 81 clockwise shift- 'ing the shifting plate 83 so as to disengage the operate the platen I00 and-bring the certifying slip. into engagement with the type wheels M52 as many times as there are lobes on the box cam.
Of course, there is shifting mechanism provided so as to shift the certifying card between the first,
, second, and third printed impressions which may be made thereon, but this mechanism forms no part of the present invention and is not shown or described herein.
When the certifying card has been removed the rod I5 is moved downwardly by means of the spirng 2| and the shutter 5 is moved downwardly by means of the spring 19 which rotates the lever 28 counter-clockwise-as viewed in Fig. 1 so that it engages the stud 38 and shifts the slide bar 3! into such a position that if the motor bar were now operated the roller l l6 would engage the cam surface II! as heretofore described.
I realize that many changes may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit thereof and I, therefore, desire to claim the same broadly except as I may limit myself in the appended claims.
