and which is to be drawn oif without. disturbing the liquid contents of .the upper portion'of the.
tank, or. which is removedprior to drawing off of the upper liquids.
The tank is shown as comprising a bottom 2 and an annular wall 3 that may be formed of 59 sheet metal plates or wooden staves in accordance with standard tank practices. Formed in the side wall of the tank, at a point spaced slightly above the bottom thereof, is an opening 4 for receiving a drain fitting 5 embodying the features of the present invention. a flattened lug 31 that is formed on the upper side of the collar, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ear 36 has an aperture 38 aligning with a threaded socket 39 in the fiat face of the lug.
Extending over the ear 36 is a reinforcement strap 40 having an opening therein registering with the opening 38 and through which a fastening device, such as a cap screw 4| is inserted and threaded into the socket 39 for tightening the ear thereagainst and retaining the shield in fixed relation with the drain fitting.
In assembling a drain of the character described, an opening 4 is provided at the desired location in the wall of the tank and of sulficient diameter to pass the neck 6 of the fitting 5. The fitting 5 is then applied from the interior of the tank so that the neck 6 thereof projects through the opening 4 and the shoulder 8 of the collar I engagesthe inner face of the tank wall. The gasket ring I2 is then sleeved over the neck of 5 the fitting and moved into engagement with the exterior face of the tank wall. The nut I3 is then applied to the threads 15 and tightened against the packing ring l2 to effect a liquid-tight seal about the neck of the fitting. During tightening of the nut I3 the lugs l8 on the extension I! may be gripped by a suitable wrench to prevent rotation of the fitting so that the mouth thereof is kept in facing relation with the bottom 2 of the tank as shown in Fig. 2. The box-like 5". shield 22 is then applied to the fitting so that the notch 32 thereof engages in the slot 35 of the collar l and the foot portions 28 and 29 engage the bottom of the tank. The cap screw 4| is then applied to anchor the box-like shield in po- Isition. The drain pipe 2! is then screwed into l-H below the edges 39 of the shield and into the mouth ID for discharge through the drain pipe. The box-like shield 22 prevents formation of Vortexes in the liquid flowing into the mouth of the fitting and prevents channelling of the upper 'i'liquid through the lower liquid and any sediment that might be contained in the bottom of the tank because there is no direct flow of the liquids, since the liquids mustfirst pass through the openings 3! of the shield before gaining en- "trance to the mouth I!) of the fitting 5. The lateral movement of the removed liquid passing under the shield keeps the bottom of the tank surrounding the mouth of the fitting clean and free of obstructions so as to avoid any agitation of the upper contents of the tank.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I have provided a relatively inexpensive and simple drain fitting that is readily installed in the wall of a tank.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. A drain for tanks including a fitting having a mouth portion and a laterally extending neck adapted to extend through an opening in the Wall of a tank, a collar on the neck engaging said wall, a clamping member on the neck cooperating with said collar to anchor the fitting, a box-like shield covering the mouth portion of the fitting having downwardly extending walls forming an open bottom, one of said walls having a portion enga ing over the neck of the fitting, and foot portions on one of the walls engaging the bottom of the tank, to cooperate with said fitting in spacing the lower edges of said walls substantially parallel with the bottom of the tank.
2. A drain for tanks including a fitting having a mouth portion and a laterally extending neck adaptedtoconnect with a drain pipe leading from a tank, a box-like shield covering the mouth portion of the fitting having downwardly extending walls and an open bottom, foot portions on one of the walls engaging the bottom of the tank, and means anchoring said shield to the fitting including a groove in the fitting and a notch in one of said walls having edges engaging in said groove.
3. A drain for tanks including a fitting having a mouth portion and a neck adapted to connect with a drain pipe leading from a tank, a boxlike shield covering the mouth portion of the fitting having downwardly extending walls and an open bottom, foot portions on one of the walls engaging the bottom of the tank,one of said walls having a notch to pass the fitting, an ear on the shield above said notch, and means securing the ear to the fitting.
.4. A drain for tanks including a fitting having a mouth portion and a laterally extending neck adapted to extend through an opening in the wall of a tank, a collar on the neck and having a groove therein, means cooperating with said collar to. anchor the fitting in the wall of the tank, a box-like shield covering the mouth portion of the fitting having downwardly extending walls and an open bottom, a footing on one of the walls engaging the bottom of the tank, one of said walls having a notch to pass the fitting, an ear on the shield above said notch, and means securing the ear to the fitting, said collar having a slot to receive edges of the wall about said notch.
5. A drain for tanks including a fitting having a downwardly facing mouth, a laterally extending neck adapted to extend through an opening in the wall of a tank, means on the neck to anchor the fitting in said wall, a box-like shield covering the mouth of the fitting having downwardly extending walls, foot portions on one of the walls engaging the bottom of the tank to space said shield from the bottom of the tank, one of said Walls having a notch to pass the fitting, an ear on the shield above said notch, and means securing the ear to the fitting.
6. A drain for tanks including a fitting having a downwardly facing mouth and av laterally eX- tending neck adapted to extend through an opening in the wall of a tank, means on the neck for anchoring the fitting to said wall, a box-like shield covering the mouth of the fitting having downwardly extending walls, foot portions on one of the Walls engaging the bottom of the tank to space the shield from said bottom, one of said walls having a notch to pass the fitting, an ear on the shield above said notch, and means securing the ear to the fitting, said fitting having a slot to receive edges of the wall about said notch.
