The present invention relates to mattresses and more particularly to mattresses of the inner spring type. The mattress herein shown and described is in the nature of an improved construction over the mattress illustrated and described in my co-pending application filed the 15th day of October, 1937, Serial No. 169,152.

The primary objects of the instant invention are to provide a mattress of the general character above indicated whose ticking is provided with a plurality of parallelly disposed spaced seams forming pockets; to provide a mattress whose pockets are stufied with oval shaped batts to form an undulated ticking for the mattress; to provide such a mattress whose undulated ticking lies adjacent a resilient pad which meshingly seats parallel spaced portions of itself within the parallel spaced ways formed by the series of parallel spaced seams of the ticking; to provide such a mattress Whose ticking and resilient padding are disposed on opposite sides of an inner spring enclosed therebetween by a peripheral band; to provide such a mattress whose upper and lower ends and sides are neatly and attractively tailored; and, to provide such a mattress which is pleasing in appearance, utilitarian and comfortable in use, and reasonably economical in manufacture.

An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a top plan perspective view of the mattress;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view thereof on line 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 2; and

Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 1.

Referring then to the drawing wherein like parts of the construction shown are designated by the same numerals in the several views, the mattress comprises an inner spring member I of conventional type whose upper and lower surfaces are each faced with any suitable material such as fibrous sisal II.

A layer of resilient padding l2 of any suitable material such as cotton felt is disposed adjacent each of the oppositely disposed layers, of sisal and ticking comprising sheets l3, 14 of suitable material secured together by a plurality of spaced parallel seams I as by means of a multi-pleater machine to form a series of longitudinal parallelly disposed pockets which lie adjacent each of the oppositely disposed layers of resilient padding l2. These seams l5 have a depending tongue 16 formed by the overlapped portions of the sheets I3, [4 in their stitched relation as best shown in Figures 3 and 4.

These parallel longitudinally disposed pockets are here shown as stuffed with folded over shaped batts ll which form an undulated mattress tick-' ing whose inner sides lie adjacent the resilient padding l2. This padding meshingly seats parallel spaced portions 3 of itself within the parallel spaced ways formed on opposite sides of the series of parallel spaced longitudinal depending tongues 56 of the seams l5 of the ticking which bond between the undulated ticking and its resilient padding makes it unnecessary to otherwise secure the ticking to the padding I? or this padding to the sisal ll since no slippage of the padding between the sisal and the ticking results 1n use.

The opposite ends of the sheet l3 of the ticking are each provided with a flap l9 stitched to the top surface thereof as best shown in Figure 2 and padding 20 is inserted between the width of each flap l9 and the upper surface of each sheet [3 at the opposite ends of the mattress. Padding 2| is likewise inserted between the sheets 13, Id of the ticking along their opposite outer lengths as best shown in Figure 4 and a layer of suitable material 22 such as cotton felt is vertically disposed adjacent the opposite four edges of the mattress as shown in Figures 2 and 4.

Stitching 23, 24 shown in Figures 2 and 4 secures the several layers of material together and a band 25 preferably of the same material as the ticking is peripherally stitched to the marginal edges of the flaps l9 and the marginal edges of the sheets l3 of the ticking along their outer lengths by means of braiding 26 in any of the several conventional ways which stitching and band compresses the padding 20, 2! to effect a neatly tailored appearance.

The provision of the flaps [9 together with the vertically disposed felt layers 22 provide a mattress of tailored and attractive appearance and, while but one specific embodiment of the invention has-been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as the-same is defined by the following claims.

I claim:

1. A mattress comprising a spring, padding disposed over the surface of one face of the spring, ticking covering said padding comprising two sheets secured together by a plurality of parallel spaced seams to form spaced parallel pockets, a flap secured adjacent each opposite end of the outer sheet of the ticking and transversely of the spaced parallel seams, a peripheral band secured to each of the opposite side lengths of the outer sheet of the ticking to form spaced side pockets each bounded by the peripheral band and the outer and inner sheets of the ticking, and secured to the outer length of each flap to form end pockets each bounded by the peripheral band, a flap, and the outer sheet of the ticking, and padding disposed within said spaced parallel pockets, within said side pockets and within said end pockets. In a padded mattress, an enveloping ticking for the mattress comprising twosheets secured together by a plurality of parallel spaced seams to form spaced parallel pockets, a flap secured adjacent each opposite end of the outer sheet of the ticking and transversely of the spaced parallel seams, a peripheral band secured to each of the opposite side lengths of the outer sheet of the ticking to form spaced'side pockets eachposed within said spaced parallel pockets, within said side pockets and within said end pockets.
