My invention relates to improvements in heating apparatus, and the same has for its object to provide a boiler for use in connection with heating systems, and more particularly of the type designed to burn liquid or gaseous fuel.
Further, said invention-has for its object to provide a boiler in which all of its operating parts including the apparatus for burning liquid L or gaseous fuel as well asthe'means for insuring the rapid circulation of the Water may be completely housed within an outercasing' or jacket. Further, said invention has for its object to provide a boiler presenting a proportionately large heat absorbing surface to the burning or radiant fuel, and the hot gases and products of combustion produced thereby.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a boiler having a large combustion chamber, and affording a long flue travel for the hot gases and products of combustion in their passage from the combustion chamber to the smoke outlet.

From the crown sheet members of the intermediate sections iii, i3 depend hollow, vertical wall portions i im, whose lower ends terminate in hollow partition members ilk, which register with each other, and form a horizontal, water-backed partition which is disposed in substantially the same horizontal plane as the horizontal portion ||a of the front wall. The front edge of thev partition member l ik of the intermediatesection I3 is preferably tapered. The said partition members ilk communicate attheir opposite ends with the water-backed side wall members of the intermediate sections i3, l', and midway between their said ends said partition members l ik communicate with the lower ends of the hollow, vertical wall portions lim, which latter have their upper ends connected to and communicate with the crown sheet members iif.

At its opposite ends the smoke-hood is provided with check-draft openings controlled by closures or damper |25. The said inwardly extending portion |21; is provided with hollow vertical wall members |2k which communicate at their lower ends with the interior of the hollow transverse member connecting the side portions, and at their upper ends with the water-backed top member |20 of the section, and together with the corresponding member |33 of the intermediate section I3' and back section l2 form three parallel horizontal flues 2Q leading from the combustion chamber to the smoke outlet |2b. The result of this arrangement is `the formation of a nre-pot and combustion chamber of relatively large cubical content tapering towards its outlet end where it merges with the flues leading to the smoke outlet, and results further in the productionof a combustion The said verchamber having its top wall disposed in several horizontal levels. I
The back section is provided at its lower portion with a clean out opening 2| provided with a closure 22 which is provided with a lining of refractory material 23, and the base of the firepot and combustion chamber may be provided with a similar lining 2li.
The back section i2 is provided at its sides with supplemental water-ways comprising integrally cast hollow vertical members 25, 25a which merge at the lower ends with hollow horizontal distributing members 2S formed partly on each boiler section and communicatively connected by nipples i6. The inner sides of said distributing members 25 have apertures 23 opening into the water-backed members constituting the base of the boiler. To the upper end of the vertical member 25 is connected, by a pipe til, an electrically operated distributing pump 3| which is connected at its intake side with the return pipe 32 extending from the heating system. A branch 'pipe 32h connects the return pipe 32 with the return inlet atI the base of the boiler, and a three-way valve 32C isprovided at the junction of the return pipe with the branch pipe 32b to cut out the distributing pump 3| and permit of the water from the heating system to be returned by gravity directly to the boiler.
To the upper end of the vertical member 252 is connected, by a pipe t3, the outlet side of domestic hot water heater whose intake side is connected by a pipe iid to the upper part Vof the water space of the boiler section. A flow pipe communicating with a source oi' water supply, is connected to the intake end of the coil S3" of the hot water heater 332, and the outlet end oi said coil. 33h may be connected by a pipe 35 with a hot water storage tank, or directly with the hot water supply system of the building.
The sheet metal jacket ifea comprises essentially three parts, viz: a front member lil which is conformed substantially to the contour of the front section l! of the boiler, a back member lll which is conformed substantially to the back section l2 of lthe boiler, and an intermediate or bridging section t2 of such width as may be necessary to cover the'gap between the inner opposing edges of the front member it and the back member di of the jacket. The said sections 40 and iii' are providedon both sides adjacent their lower edges with longitudinal ribs Il@ forming grooves upon the inner sides of said jacket members, and the intermediate section is provided with a similar rib 43a whose inner surface is conformed to the outer surfaces of said ribs 43. In said grooves are' loosely fitted conforming curved plates it to the central portion of each of which is xed a screw-threaded bolt Ma which extends through an aperture in the grooved portion 432 of the intermediate or bridging section 15,2, and is provided with a nut whereby the several parts may be held secured to adjusted position.
The front jacket member iil) is provided with openings d5, it having closures 45a, 46a to give access to the front section of the boiler and the openings therein, and the back jacket member 4| provided with openings lll, t8 having closures 'il, d8a, giving access to the rear section I2 of the boiler and the openings therein.
When desired the inner sides of the jacket members may be provided throughout with insulating lining 139, as indicated at Figs. 4 and 5.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A boiler of the character described comprising a front section having an upper portion including a rearwardly extending lower wall `intermediate of the section .forming a burner chamber therebelow, a back section having a projecting lower portion, and an intermediate transverse section enclosing a fire pot and a combustion chamber, said back section having -a smoke outlet. therein, iiues extending from said re pot and combustion chamber to said smoke outlet, a water-backed crown sheet separating said fire pot and combustion chamber from said fiues, and certain of said sections including registering transverse water-backed portions forming apartition in said fire pot and combustion chamber below said crown sheet, said crown y sheet and said partition communicating vat their opposite ends with the water-backed side wall portions of said sections, and said partition serving to directthe flow of hot gases and products of combustion over and under said partition before said currents pass out of said fire pot and combustion chamber. i
2. A boiler of the character described comprising a frontA section having an upper portion including a rearwardly extending lower wall intermediate of the section forming a burner chamber therebelow, a back section having a projecting lower portion, and intermediate transverse sections enclosing a fire pot and a combustion chamber, a smoke outlet in said back section, and flues extending from said fire pot and cornbustion chamber to said smoke outlet, said sections having registering, transverse water-backed members forming the crown sheet separating saidr i'lrepot and combustion chamber from said flues, registering and transverse water-backed members forming a horizontal partition in said, fire pot and combustion chamber below said crown sheet, said crown sheet and said partition communicating at their opposite ends with the waterbacked side wall portions of said sections, and
registering vertical water-backed members connecting said partition and crown sheet and forming longitudinal iiues therebetween communicating at their forward and rear ends with said fire pot and combustion chamber, and said partition and said last named flues serving to divide the flow of hot gases and products of combustion into two currents passing over and under said partition and to cause said currents to combine again before the same pass out of said re pot and combustion chamber.
3. A boiler of the character described comprising a front section, a back section having a smoke outlet therein, and intermediate transverse sections enclosing a fire pot and a l combustion chamber, and lues `extending from said fire pot and combustion chamber to said smoke outlet, means communicatively connecting the sections, and supplemental water ways each including a vertical member formed integrally with'one of said sections, and horizontal members communieating at one end with said vertical member,
said horizontal members being disposed at the lower ends of the several sections rand communicatively connected with each other and having l apertures therein communicating with the water spaces of said sections, and means associated with the boiler and communicating with the Water ways thereof for forcibly circulating the water through said waterv ways and the sections.
4. A boiler of the character described comprising a front section, a back section having a smoke outlet therein and intermediate transverse sections enclosinga fire pot and acombustion chamber, and iiues' extending fromv said fire pot and combustion chamber to said smoke outlet, means communicatively connecting the sections, supplemental water ways each including a vertical member formed integrally with one of said sections, and horizontal members com- .municating with said vertical members, said horizontal ymembers being disposed at the lower ends of the several sections and communicatively ,connected with each other and the water spaces yend of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber, and an upper forward portion extending forwardly beyond the lower portion of the boiler end enclosing the opposite end of the `fuel receptacleand combustion chamber and providing recesses within the geometrical outlines of the boiler to. receive respectively, the boiler accessories, and a fluid fuel burner, said forward recess having its rear wall disposed inv a vertical plane inwardly of the front of the boiler, and means in'said rear wall'for receiving the nozzle of the oil burner located in said recess.
6. A boiler .ofthe character described having a rear lowerportion extending rearwardly beyond the rear upper portion and enclosing one end of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber, and an upper forward portion extending forwardly beyond the'lower portion of the boiler and enclosing the opposite end of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber and providing recesses within the geometrical outlines of the boiler to receive, respectively, the vboiler accessories, and a iiuid fuel burner, said forward recess having its rear wall disposed in a vertical plane inwardly of the front of the boiler, means in saidv rear y wall for receiving the nozzlev of the oil burner located in said recess, and a jacket enclosing the boiler.

A boiler of the character described including front, back and intermediate sections, said back section having a lower portion extending rearwardly beyond the upper portion thereof and enclosing one end of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber, and said front section having an upper portion extending forwardly beyond the lower portion thereof and enclosing the opposite end of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber and` providing a recess below the same to receive a fluid fuel burner; the lower front wall portion of the intermediate section adjacent said vfront section forming the rear back section having a lower portion extending beyond the upper portion thereof and enclosing one end of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber, and said front section having. an -upper portion extending forwardly beyond thelow- :er portion thereof and enclosing the opposite end of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber and providing a recess to receive a fluid fuel burner; the bottomwall portion of said -front section extending rearwardly and downwardly" and meeting with the front wall portion of the intermediate .section adjoining said front secfoil tion and jointly forming the top and rear Walls of said recess, and means in said wall for receiving the nozzle of the fluid fuel burner located in said recess.`
` 9. `A boiler of the character described including front, back and intermediate sections, said back section having a lower portion extending rearwardly beyond the upper portion thereof and enclosing one end of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber, and said front section having an upper portion extending forwardly beyond the lower portion thereof and enclosing the opposite end oi the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber and providing recesses within the geometrical outlines of the boiler, respectively, to receive the boiler accessories, and a duid fuel burner;v the lower iront` wall portion of the intermediate section adjoining said front section forming the rear wall 4of said burner recess, and means in said rear wall for receiving the nozzle of the uid fuel burner located in said recess, said boiler accessories and said fuel burner lying wholly within the geometrical outlines of the boiler, and a metallic jacket enclosing the boiler.

A boiler of the character described comprising a front section having a water-backed upper portion including a rearwardly extending lower wall providing a burner chamber therebelow, a water-backed back section including a rearwardly projecting lower portion and a water-backed intermediate section, the lower portions of said intermediate section and said back section enclosing a lire pot and combustion chamber, and the upper portion of said several sections enclosing flues communicating through said iront section with said fire pot and combustion chamber, a water-backed crown sheet separating said fire pot and combustion chamber from said flues, and a transverse water-backed partition on said intermediate sections in spaced relation to and below said crown sheet.

A boiler of the character described comprising front, back and intermediate transverse sections, said back section including a rearwardly projecting lower portion, and said front section including a forwardly projecting upper portion, the lower portions of said intermediate and back sections enclosing a iire pot and combustion chamber, and the upper portion of said several sections enclosing flues communicating through said projecting front portion with said iire pot and combustion chamber, a water-backed crown sheet separa-.ting said fire pot `and combustion chamber from said flues, and a transverse water-backed partition on the intermediate of said sections in spaced relation to and below said crown sheet within said fire pot and combustion chamber for directing the hot gases and products of combustion over and under the same through said projecting iront portion into said flues.

A boiler of the character described comprising a water-backed enclosure including lower and upper portions, and a smoke outlet in said upper portion, said lower portion projecting beyond said upper portion at the rear and enclosing a re pot and combustion chamber, and said upper portion projecting beyond said lower por- Y tion, at the front and enclosing flues extending from said re pot and combustion chamber at the front thereof to the smoke outlet, a Waterbacked crown sheet separating said fire pot and combustion chamber from said fiues, and a transverse water-backed partition in said fire pot and combustion chamber below said crown sheet serving to direct the flow of hot gases and products of combustion from the combustion chamber over and under said partition into the ues through said projecting front portion.

A boiler of the character described comprising a water-backed enclosure including 10W- er and upper portions, said lower portion projecting beyond said upper portion at the rear and enclosing a fire pot and combustion chamber, and said upper portion projecting beyond said lower portion at the front and enclosing lues in communication with said fire pot and y combustion chamber through the projecting front portion, a water-backed crown sheet separating said fire pot and combustion chamber from said flues, and a transverse water-backed partition spaced below said crown sheet intermediate said front and rear projecting portions and serving to direct the flow of hot gases and products of combustion over and under said partition through said front projecting portion into said flues.

A boiler of the character specified comprising front, back and intermediate sections each having a continuous peripheral water compartment and enclosing a iire pot and combustion chamber, said front section having an upper forwardly--overhanging portion including a rearwardly extending lower wall and forming a burner chamber therebelow, said front section and said intermediate section each having a crown sheet member and a partition member communicatively connected together and to the peripheral water compartments or the sections,
and said back section having its upper portions disposed forwardly relative to the lower portion and terminating in a relatively shallow part iorming a smoke hood and smoke outlet, said back section having an extended portion on its inner side aligned with the crown sheet members of said intermediate and front sections and forming there-with flues extending from the re pot and combustion chamber to the smoke outlet.
15. A boiler of the character described comprising a front section, a back section having a smoke outlet therein, and an intermediate transverse section enclosing a fire pot and a combustion chamber, and flues extending from said re pot and combustion chamber to said smoke outlet, supplemental water ways each including a vertical member formed integrally with and end section of vthe boiler and horizontal members formed integrally with other of the several boiler sections adjacent the bases thereof and having apertures therein communicating severally with said vertical member and with said boiler sections, a circulating pump connected at its intake side with the return pipe from the heating system, and at its outlet side with the upper end of one o said vertical members, and a hot water heater connected at its outlet side with the upper end of another of said vertical members, and its intake side with the upper part of the boiler.
