Application October 6, 1938, Serial No. 233,683
`1 Claim.
This invention relates to a means adapted for the deposit of milk bottlesand their retention against theft pending removal by the authorized person or owner.
It is further aimed to provide a structure in the nature of a receptacle having doors on opposite sides one of which doors may be locked after deposit of the milk bottle or other article and which will remain lockeduntil released through operation of the other door, said latter door also being operable to unlatch the iirst mentioned. door.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings: I
Figure 1 is a View in front elevation showing `2() my improvements installed in a wall;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3; l
Figurel 5 is a section taken on the same plane as Figure 4 `but showing the interior door open;
Figure 6 is a cross section taken on the line 5-6 of Figure 3, and
Figurej is a cross section taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 3.
Referring specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or simi- 3 lar parts, a receptacle is provided to receive milk Said receptacle has a rectangular `frame I3 which is built into a Wall I4 of a building. Frames i5 and I6, on the outside `and inside of the wall I4 surround the frame I3 and are fastened thereto. Outside door I'I is pivoted or hinged at II to the frame I5 and has a conven- Jtional latch mechanismat I1 to secure the door against accidental opening to the frame I5. In a similar manner, the door I2 is hinged as at IB to the frame I6 and a conventional latch I9 is employed to secure such door I2 to the frame I6 against accidental movement.
` Fastened to one `oi the vertical walls of frame secured to door II.
bottles or any equivalent in a compartment ID,
(Cl. 23,2-41A) `I3 in the space I0, as by means of screws 20, is a bar or plate 2l preferably having one end curved or deflected as at 22 and provided with a slot 23.
Slidable along the plate or bar 2| is an auxili- 5 ary bar 24, the same being guided in surrounding loops 25 and 25, struck out from and integral with the bar 2 l. `.A contractile coil spring 21 is fastened atone end to a lug 28 on the auX- iliary bar 24 and at its other end to a lug 29 on 101 the loop 26. Such bar `24 when unrestrained, will be projected by the spring 21 into the path of closing of the door l2. Such door l2 preferably has a wear strip or plate at 30 adapted to directly abut the adjacent end of bar 24. 15'.
Door I I on the interior thereof carries a latch member 3l, -pivoted at 32 to a bracket 33 suitably Such latch 3l is urged to projected position by a springmember 34 interiorly of the latch,labuttin`gA the same at oneV end 20 and abutting the bracket 33 at the other end.
`.Said latch 3ll has apoint or hook 35 which will `engage and snap into the opening 23 when the door Il is closed. In the operation of the device, the inside door 25 I2 is left closed and the outside door II is also closed but with latch 3l held retracted from slot 23 by bar 24 as in Figures 1 and 2 or with such outside door II left open. The inside door does not have to remain closed, but closing movement 30 thereof is necessary to slide bar 24 from the position of Figure 5 to that of Figure 2. After the milk bottle or other article is deposited by the distributor within the compartment I0, door Il' is pushed inwardly and the latch 3l wedges 35 between the somewhat exible blades or bars 2l Y and 24 and engages the slot 23 as shown in Figure 4. The latter figure shows the door II in an intermediate position during its closing movement. The door II cannot be opened from the o exterior by an unauthorized person because of such engagement of latch `3| in slot 23. The authorized person from the interior of the building, may remove the deposited bottle or the like when door I2 is opened as in Figure 5. I-Iow- 45 ever, the latch 3l must be detached from the slot 23 before the door Il can be again opened to receive another bottle or article. To this end, it is necessary to close the door I2 which will abut the projected end of the bar 24 in its path 50 (see Figure 5), sliding the latter into engagement with the latch 3| and swinging the latch away from bar 24 against the tension of its expansive spring 34, and detaching it from the slot 23 as in Figure 2, whereupon the door Il may thereafter be opened upon the operation of the latch I1. It will be realized that the latch will automatically lock any time door Il' is closed because the latch 3| will travel along plate or bar 2 I, and by means of spring 34 will snap into the slot 23. To facilitate the engagement and disengagement, such bars 2| and 24 are somewhat exible and yieldable at their forward end.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the inlvention. y
I claim as my invention:
In a locking device having a bar provided with a slot for engagement by a latch carried by a fl c door, and a bar slidable relatively to the rst bar controlled by another door; a spring urging they second bar into the path of movement of the second door, the second bar being of a length for pushing by closing of the second door to eiect disengagement of the latch from said slot, the
iirst mentioned bar having a Curved portion in which said slot is provided, the other bar at the corresponding end having a portion which may bedeiiected away from said curved portion to enable the latch to enter between such portions to effect engagement with said slot.
