This invention relates to sewing machine attachments and particularly to an improved pinking machine capable of being attached to a standard sewing machine and actuated by the same power which actuates the sewing machine, an ob ect being to provide a construction which is arranged wholly beneath the bed plate of the sewing machine except the pinking head.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, positively acting pinking structure arranged beneath the bed of the sewing machine alndftactuated by power taken from the shuttle s a A further object of the invention is to provide a pinking machine attachment which may be applied to a standard sewing machine and caused to operate simultaneously with the nee- 'dle of the sewing machine and to be readily thrown out of operation at any time to permit the sewing machine to function in the usual manner.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a construction which will form a top stitching operation at the same time that it performs a pinking operation.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is aside view of a standard sewin machine which is known on the market as 11. Singer 95 Commercial, an embodiment of the invention being shown applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the bed plate of the sewing machine shown in Fig. 1, together with an embodiment of the invention applied thereto, certain parts being shown in section for better illustrating the construction;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing a part of the bed of the sewing machine in top plan and part of the pinking machine structure;

I showing the top layer of cloth folded over and a bed 2 and an arm 3. The needle mechanism 4 is .of the usual type and carries a needle 5 which is adapted to function'simultaneously with the pinking head 6, as hereinafter fully described.
From an examination of Figs. '1 and 2, it will be readily seen that the entire construction of the pinking device is beneath the bed 2, except the head 6, which head when not in operation is substantially flush with the top of the throat plate 1. r This throat plate is a standard plate except for the aperture 8, as shown in Fig. 5. This aperture is provided with a V-shaped portion 9 and straight portions III, II and i2, whereby the head 5 may freely slide therein and be guided thereby, so that the cutting edges of the head cutter 6' may readily function tosecure the desired pinking action. As shown in Fig. 8,
the notches l3 indicate the pinking, while the lines I 4 indicate stitching which takes place at the same time as the pinking.
From Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that the bed 2 of the machine is not cut or weakened in any way but only the depending lug I9 is cut to fit the block 35. It will be seen, therefore, that the invention is really an attachment to a standard machine now in common use whereby top stitching and pinking may be formed at the same time, or either of these operations may be performed independent of the other. While in Figs. 3 and 9, inclusive, a straight seam has been illustrated, it will be evident that the machine will readily operate to apply a circular top stitching and pinking at the same time.
From'Fig. 3 it will be observed that the point I5 of the cutter 6' is directly in line with the opening l6 through which the needle passes. It will be seen, therefore, that the pinking action will take place at the same time that the stitching is applied.
As indicated, the sewing machine I is provided with a shaft l! which is adapted to rotate the usual shuttle It! in connection with the needle 5 to provide the desired stitching. The bed 2 is formed with a depending lug [9 which car-,
ries a bearing sleeve 20 for the shaft l'l. Lug I9 is partly cut away to accommodate a block 35, as hereinafter described. The pinking device embodying the invention is driven-from the shaft I! through a, pinion 2|, which is pinned or otherwise rigidly secured to shaft I1 and arranged to be in constant meshwith a gear 22 rotatably mounted on a pin 23. An eccentric or cam 24 is pinned or otherwise rigidly secured to the gear 22 and acts on a roller 25 which is journaled on a pin 26. The pin 26 is carried by suitable connecting bars 21 and 28 secured to the respective levers 23 and 30. By this arrangement the cam 24 is continually rotated and if roller 25 is in engagement therewith the levers 23 and will be raised and lowered, the lowering action being caused by the cam 24 and the raising action being caused by a spring 3|. It will be observed that the spring 3| is held in operative position by a screw 32 having an enlarged head 33 and at the opposite end a threaded portion 34 screwed into a block 35 rigidly clamped to the lug l9 by screws 35 and 31 shown in Fig. 4. Screws 36 and 31 are preferably arranged at an angle to each other whereby the block 35 is not only clamped firmly in place but is braced against lateral movement. It will be noted that the pin or shaft'23 is 'carried by the block 35. Spring 3| presses at one end against the head 33 and at the other end against an arm 38, which arm has a large aperture 33 through which the screw 32 loosely extends. The spring 3] has a double function-it holds the roller 25 against cam 24 and also holds the cutting member 6' of head 6 against the V-shaped wall 3.
From Fig. '7 it will be observed that the levers 23 and 30 are connected by a bar 40 which may be integral with the levers or rigidly secured thereto in any way so as to space the threaded enlargements 4| and 42. Binding screws 43 and 44 are fitted into the enlargements 4| and 42, as shown in Fig. 4, and also extend into coneshaped recesses in the bearing or enlargement 45 of a lever 46. As the cam 24 rotates it will act on roller 25 and swing the levers 23'and 30 downwardly and will pull the lever 45 downwardly to the postion shown in Fig. 2. When the cam 24 moves to the opposite position, the spring 3| will raise the levers 23 and 30 and also lever 48 to the position shown in Fig. 1.
It will be readily seen, therefore, that the pinking operation will take place while the-needle 5 is functioning or, if desired, the needle 5 could be eliminated and the pinking operation carried on. Also, if desired, the hand actuated arm 48'. which is rotatably mounted on shaft 41, could be swung upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. When this occurs the arm 48, which is also rotatably mounted on shaft 41 and rigidly secured to arm 43', will be swung downwardly to the dotted position shown in Fig. 2 and, consequently, levers 23 and 30 will be held in their lowered position, whereby the cam 24 though rotating will not function to actuate the pinking mechanism. This will allow the sewing machine to be used in the.
usual way the same as if they pinking machine attachment were not applied to the sewing machine. It will also be noted that when the head 6 is in its lowered position the entire bed is clean and clear so that no obstructions will be presented when the sewing machine is being used in the usual way of sewing machines. Also no oil or obstructions will-be presented to injure in any way the fabric beingstitched or pinked.
In regard to the levers 23 and 30, it will be'seen that'the end opposite lever 46 is pivotally connected to the bracket 43 by a pin 50. The bracket 43 issecured to the bed 2 by screws or bolts 5! which are part of the sewing machine i. It will be observed, therefore, that no changes are necessary in thesewing machine except the substitution of the throat plate I and the application of the screws 35 and 31 and the bracket 52 which mounts the shaft 41 on the lower Fart of the bed plate. Incidentally it will be observed that the bracket 52 is held in place by suitable screws 53 and 54.

If two pieces of cloth were arranged in the machine, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the pinking head 5 would perform the pinking operation at the same time the needle 5 performed the top stitching operation. It will, therefore, be seen that the top stitching and the pinking operation is done at one time. From Fig. 9 it will be seen that in the operation illustrated there are three separate layers of cloth which are stitched together at the same time, and two of the layers are pinked simultaneously with the stitching operation. Once through the machine and there is produced a completed or finished product.
We claim:
l. A pinking attachment for sewing machines including a construction arranged beneath the bed plate of the sewing machine, except the pinking head and the throat plate, said construction including said throat plate having a V-shaped notch formed so that the walls of the notch will present shearing members, and a pinking tion in time with the needle of the sewing machine, and spring means for moving said lever and pinking head upwardly.
' 2. A pinking attachment for sewing machines including a construction arranged beneath the bed plate of the sewing machine except the pinking head and the throat plate, said throat plate having an opening with a V-shaped portion, a
pinking head fitting into said opening and coacting with the V-shaped portion for cutting a fabric, a reciprocating member for reciprocating said head, a lever wholly beneath said bed plate pivotally mounted at one end and at the opposite end being pivotally connected with said reciprocating member, a spring for moving said lever and said reciprocating member in one direction, a roller carried by said lever, a cam acting on said roller for moving the same against the action of said spring, and a train of gears for transmitting power from the driving mechanism of said sewing machine to said cam for rotating the same.
3. A pinking attachment for sewing machines including a throat plate having an opening formed with a V-shaped portion, a reciprocating head slidingly mounted in said opening and conforming to the shape thereof, means arranged beneath the bed of the sewing machine for reciprocating said pinking head and means for rendering the pinking mechan sm inoperative and for holding said head substantially flush with the top of said throat plate when the pinking means including a rotatable cam for swinging said lever in one direction, and a spring for moving the lever in the opposite direction wherebysaid pinking head is adapted to reciprocate, and means actuated by the shuttle shaft of the sewing machine for rotating said cam whereby said pinking head will function in time with the needle of the sewing machine.
5. A pinking attachment for sewing machines including a throat plate having an opening provided with a substantially V-shaped portion, a pinking head slidably mounted in said opening and conforming to the shape thereof, means arranged beneath the bed plate of the sewing machine for reciprocating said head, said means being operatively connected to the shuttle shaft of the sewing machine for causing the head to function in timed relation with the needle of the sewing machine, and a hand-actuated lever for throwing said mechanism out of operation and for holding said pinking head substantially flush with the top of said throat plate.

A pinking attachment for sewing machines including a throat plate having an aperture therein, a pinking head slidingly fitted into said aperture and conforming to the shape thereof, a reciprocating member for reciprocating said head, a lever structure pivotally connected at one end with the bed plate of said sewing machine, means for pivotally mounting said reciprocating member on the free end thereof, a block rigidly secured to said bed plate, a spring acting on said reciprocating member tending to swing the samein one direction, a headed screw causing said spring to function, said headed screw being carried by said block whereby the reciprocating member and lever will be moved in one direction by said spring, a roller carried by said lever, a cam acting on said roller for moving the lever against the action of said spring and thereby loweringsaid head, a gear wheel rotatably mounted on said block rigidly secured to said cam, and a pinion rigidly secured to the shuttle shaft of the sewing machine continually meshing with saidgear wheel whereby said pinking head will function in time with the needle of the sewing machine.
7; A pinking structure adapted to be connected to a sewing machine with all parts beneath the bed plate thereof except the throat plate and the pinking head, said structure including a bracket connected to said bed plate, a pair of levers pivotally mounted on said bracket, a reciprocating member pivotally connected to the free end of said levers, said reciprocating member at one end having an apertured arm, a pinking head connected to the opposite end of said reciprocating member, a throat plate having an opening accommodating said pinking head, a block secured to the under surface of the bed plate of said sewing machine, a screw having a head, said screw being threaded into said block and extending through the apertured arm of said reciprocating member, a spring surrounding said screw and acting against the head thereof and said arm, whereby said pinking head is held in functioning position and said reciprocating member and said levers are urged in a direction for raising said head, means including a cam for swinging said levers to lower said pinking head and a train of gearing for rotating said cam, said train of gearing including a pinion rigidly se cured to the shuttle shaft of the sewing machine.
8. A pinking structure adapted to be connected to a sewing machine with all parts heneath the bed plate thereof except the throat plate and the pinking head, said structure including a bracket connected to said plate, a lever structure pivotally mounted on said bracket, a
reciprocating member connected to the free end of said lever structure, said reciprocating member at one end having an apertured arm, a pinking head connected to the opposite end of said reciprocating member, a throat plate having an opening accommodating said pinking head, a block secured to the under surface of said bed plate, a screw having a head, said screw being threaded into said block and extending loosely g machine whereby the top stitching and pinking may be performed at the same time with the same driving mechanism.
