2 Claims.
This invention aims to provide a sandal cover for footwear, so constructed that it can be taken off and put on readily, the article being light, so that it can be folded and carried in small compass, the article being waterproof, without having the disadvantages attendant upon the use of rubber.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present in vention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 shows, in side elevation, a coverconstructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
. Fig. 5 is a fragmental section taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, but showing a modification.
. In carrying out the invention, there is provided a cover I, constructed to conform to the shape of the article of footwear to be enclosed. The cover I comprises an upper 2, made of thin, flexible waterproof material, such as oil silk, the upper including a heel pocket 3, to which is secured a lower, protectinglift 4, which may be made of sharkskin if desired.
The forward part of the upper 2 is divided longitudinally, along downwardly diverging lines, as shown at 5, to form side wings 6 and a tongue I disposed between the side wings, the tongue extending from the top of the upper downwardly to an outsole II, to be described hereinafter. Slide fasteners 8 (Zippers) connect the side wings 6 to the tongue 1. The construction is such that by sliding the movable members of the fasteners 8 downwardly to the outsole H, the entire front of the cover can be opened, thereby making more easy, the placing of the cover on an article of footwear.
1939, Serial No. 292,325
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that an insole 9 is provided, preferably made of the same materialas the upper 2. The insole 9 has inwardly extended flanges, overlapped by inwardly extended flanges on the upper 2, the flanges of the parts referred to being united by stitching indicated at Ill. The outsole ll, hereinbefore referred to, is,connected to the upper 2 by stitching l2, disposed outwardly of the stitching II).
In Fig. 5, parts hereinbefore described are designated by numerals already used, with the suffix a. The flanges of the insole 9a and of the upper 2a are connected by stitching shown at l5, and are turned outwardly, the outwardly turned portions of the'flanges being secured to the outsole Ila, by stitching indicated at IS.
The article is so constructed that it will con,- summate the objects set forth in the opening portion of this specification.
The outsole Il may be made of any material which will have the necessary flexibility, but, ordinarily, rubber is not used in the making of the outsole.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A footwear cover comprising an upper and a sole assembled with the upper, the forward part of the upper being divided longitudinally to form side wings and a tongue disposed between the side wings and extended from the top of the upper downwardly to the sole, adjacent to the forward end thereof, and slide fasteners connecting the tongue with the side wings, the upper being formed of thin, flexible, waterproof material.
2. A footwear cover comprising an upper, an insole, an outsole, the insole and the upper having overlapped flanges which are extended outwardly to overlap the lower part of the upper, first stitching uniting theflanges, independently of the outsole, second stitching uniting the outsole, the upper and the flanges and located outwardly off the first stitching, and means for opening the upper at the front, along downwardly diverging lines,'from the top of the upper downward to the lateral edges of the outsole, the first and second stitchings, located as described, strengthening the union between the upper and the insole and the outsole, to offset the opening of the upper at the front, as aforesaid.
