IMPROVEMENT lN HOSE-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,032, dated August 26, 1879 application filed June 20, 1879. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIoK STEWART, of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Hose-Oouplin g, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct hose-couplings so that the water-passage will be iuiobstructed and of the full inner diameter of the hose; also, to render the joint of the without using packingrings.
My invention will be described in connec tion with the accompanying drawing, wherein the two portions of the coupling are shown by a longitudinal section.
A is the male portion of the coupling, consisting of the ring a, formed with the projecting threaded portion b and with the neckpiece 0, attached by a screw-thread within the o ring.
Around the neck-piece is the band 0?, between which and the piece 0 the hose is clamped by spreading the piece 0.
is the female portion of the coupling, conslsting of the ring 0, having an interior thread, and fitted with the neck-piece f, that is held to the ring 0 by the interior screw-collar, g. h isthe'band for clamping the end of the hose.
The ring 0 is formed with an interior annul lar shoulder,-i, for the flanged ends of the neck-piece f and collar 9, whereby the parts are connected, and the ring 0 may be turned for uniting the parts A B of the coupling.
It will be seen that by this construction the Water-passage through the coupling is smooth and unobstructed, and of the full diameter of the hose.
To render the joint Water-tight the screw end I) of the portion Ais ground to a rounded or convex form, and its seat in the screw-collar gof the portion B is ground to a corresponding concave form, so that without the use of a gasket or intervening packing the joint will be tight.
The outer surface of the neck-pieces c f and interior surface of the bands (I h are ribbed or corrugated, so that when the neck-pieces. are expanded with a suitable instrument the hose will be held securely. By having the neckpieces made separately from the rings and attached as shown, they can be removed in case of injury and others substituted, and the more costly part of the coupling be thereby saved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a hose-coupling, the combination of the male portion A, formed with the projection b, and fitted with the neck-piece 0 and band at, and the female portion B, having an interior thread, and fitted with the neck-piece f, screwcollar g, and band h, substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
