3 Claims.
l h'e present invention relates to hardware and more particularly to handles for doors, drawers,
'or the like.
The present invention aims to provide an im-v proved article of hardware comprising a plurality of parts which may be readily assembled into a rigid non-turning handle suitable for use as a door pull, drawer pull, or the like.
A still further object is a handle of the above type which may be of chromium or other stainless finish and have associated therewith an interohangeable colored portion whereby it may be made to harmonize with any selected color scheme.
A still further object is a handle of the above type which is simple and inexpensive in construction and may be readily assembled or disassembled by the user.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out more in detail hereinafter.
. The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplitied in the construction hereafter vset forth and the scope of the application of which will be in-.
dicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a plan view of the handle embodying the invention herein, mounted on the surface of a drawer, door, or the like;
Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a View taken on the line 4-4 of Fig, 3; and
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are perspective views of the parts which make up the handle.
Referring to the drawing, the handle comprises a plurality of parts including a securing member ID, a body or housing member 12 in which the securing member is received and positioned, and a colored strip or disc l4 adapted to be positioned and held in place between cooperating parts of the securing and housing mem bers. a
More specifically, the securing member comprises a rectangular face plate l6 having a centrally arranged aperture l8 adapted to receive the reduced outer end portion 20 of a non-circular shank 22. The aperture l8 in the plate member may be slightly countersunk and the reduced portion 26 of the shank peaned over to integrally secure the face plate and shank together. The shank member 22 in the embodiment illustrated is rectangular in cross section,
and the'inner end thereof is provided with a plurality of prongs 24 adapted to bite into the surface upon'which the handle is mounted to securely position itthereon and prevent rotation thereof. There is further provided in the shank a centrally arranged bore 26 extending from the inner end thereof and provided with a suitable thread for receiving a securing screw or bolt 28; i
The body or housing member I2 comprisesa base plate 38 having a centrally arranged opening 32 adapted to receive the reduced upper end 34 of an elongated spacing and positioning sleeve 36; the reduced upper end of the sleeve being peaned over to integrally secure the plate and sleeve together. The opening 38 through the.
elongated sleeve 36 is of like cross section to the shank 22, whereupon when the parts are assem-.
bled the securing member and body member will be held against rotation relative to one another.
For ease in manufacture, the sleeve 36 may be made from a solid piece of stock and then reamed or drilled to provide a circular bore 40 extending substantially the entire length from the outer end thereoffwhreupon it will only be necessary to broach or out the non-circular rectanglar opening 38 fora relatively short distance through the closed inner end of the sleeve. The outer end of the sleeve may then be shouldered, thus providing the reduced portion which comprises a relatively thin but strong circumferential rim which may be readily peaned over into securing position.
As readily seen from Fig. 3, the shank 22 of the securing member is of a greater length than the sleeve 36, and when the parts are assembled the prongs 24 of the shank will project beyond the lower end of the sleeve. With this arrangement, when it is desired to secure the handle to a door, drawer, or the like, the drawer or door member 42 has a hole 44 drilled therethrough of such size as to permit the bolt member 28 to be passed therethroughl Theouter end of the bolt member is then screwed into the bore of the shank 22, whereupon, by rotating the bolt, the face plate IE will be drawn down and into abutting engagement with the base plate 30 of the. securing member, and the prongs of the shank will be drawn intothe drawer member 42, thus drawing the securing and body, members into a rigid non-turning assembled handle. When so positioned, the face and base plates cooperate to 1 provide a handle bar spaced outwardly from the surface of the drawer by the sleeve 38, whereby same may be readily gripped.
colored strip within the recess.
There is further provided the colored disc or strip M adapted to be positioned between the face plate l6 and base plate iiil if it is desired to have the handle harmonize with any particular color scheme which is being used. The disc M is rectangular in shape and provided with a centrally arranged rectangular opening 455 adapted to receive the shank 22 of the securing member. In order to prevent any loose play of the disc on the shank, the rectangular opening 48 is somewhat smaller than the outer surface of the shank, and the corners of the opening are additionally cutaway to provide inwardly extending tabs 43 which will closely engage the sides of the shank when the disc is placed thereon.
In order that a portion of the disc will be visible when the parts are assembled, the cross sectional area of the face plate 15 is less than that of the base plate at, whereas the cross sectional area of the disc is greater than the face plate, but less than the base plate. Thus when the parts are assembled, with the disc positioned between the face and base plates, a portion 55 of the disc will be seen intermediate of the edges of the face plate and base plate.
In the particular embodiment shown, the base plate 33 is given a concave curvature and provided with a recess 52 adapted to receive the colored strip M, and the face plate is given a like concave curvature to securely position the It is apparent, of course, that the face plate, base plate, and colored disc may have any desired but corresponding shape; it being necessary, however, that the face plate be of less cross sectional area than the base plate and the colored disc of an intermediate cross sectional area in order that it will be properly displayed.
It is likewise apparent that if it is desired to change the colored disc anyone can do it by simply removing the securing screw, whereupon the handle may be disassembled and the old colored strip removed and the new one put in its place.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely differ ent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
I claim as my inventions 1. A handle of the character described, comprising an elongated sleeve, a base plate secured to the outer end of said sleeve, said plate and sleeve having a non-circular centrally arranged opening extending therethrough, a shank of like cross section to said opening extending through said sleeve and having prongs on its inner end adapted to engage the surface on which the handle is mounted, and a face plate secured to the outer end of the shank and adapted to overlie said base plate.
2. A handle of the character described, comprising an elongated body member having a noncircular opening extending therethrough, a securing member including an elongated shank of like cross section to' the opening and extending through said body member, a plate secured to the outer end of said shank and adapted to overlie the outer end of the body member, said shank being of such length that the inner end thereof extends beyond the inner end of the body memher, and prongs on the inner end of the shank adapted to bite into the surface upon which the handle is mounted to secure same against rotation.
3. A handle of the character described, comprising a body member having a non-circular opening therein, a securing member overlying the outer end of said body member and having an elongated shank depending therefrom, said shank being of like cross section to the opening in said body member and of such length that it extends therethrough and beyond the inner end thereof, and prongs on the inner end of said shank adapted to bite into the surface upon which the handle is mounted to secure same against rotation.
