UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,190,189
PACKAGING CIGARS Joseph A. Nenmair, Hollis, N. Y., auignor to International Cigar Machinery Company, a corporation of New Jersey Application Hi! 22, 1987, SerlalNo. 145210 4 Claims. (Cl. 93-2) This invention relates to improvements in Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5 of the accomwrapping or enveloping machines, more particupanying drawings, a tear tab strip T is fed from larly to the packaging of cigars and other are reelRmounted ona shaft ll), loosely supportedticles wherein Cellophane" or other similar in bearings (not shown) of the main frame ll of 5 wrapping material is used. The invention comthe cigar enveloping machine. The tear tab strip 6 prises an improved package, a method of making T is drawn from a reel R and over a guide roller the same and an improvement on an existing l2 suitably pivoted at ii on the frame II by the form of cigar enveloping machine whereby my coaction of a feed roller ll mounted on a shaft method may be carried out in the packaging of i5 supported in a bracket it with a feed roller 10 various articles. a l'l (Fig. 5). The latter is yleldingly held against 10 The main object of this invention is to enclose the feed roller ll, as will be presently described, cigars .within a sealed envelope having a suitably thereby providing the requisite feeding tension on attached tear tab projecting therefrom to facilithe tear tab strip. Arms l8 are provided with tate opening. ,To this end, in the particular em-e pintles ll supporting the tension roller i1 and bodiment of the invention illustrated herein the are mounted on a shaft 2|) journaled in bearings tear tabs are severed from a strip and secured of bracket l6 (Fig. 5) and a bearing 2! of a to one margin of the wrapping material previous bracket 22 (Fig. 2). Tension spring i8a anto envelopment of the cigar therein. Another chored to the bracket I 6 is connected to the arm object of the invention is to provide means for It for suitably urging the feed roller l'l against holding the severed tear tab under pressure the roller l4.

Here the desired length with a cigar enveloping machine of the general of tear tab T is cut by'coaction of the knife type shown in the patentto H. H. wheeler, No. blades Land 32 when the knife operating arm 36 I 1,899,174, issued February 28, 1933. g is swung down with the operating screw 35 to ac- 1 tuate the blade 32. While the tear tab '1" is be ing cut, a pressure pad 45 yieldingly mounted on the knife operating arm 36 by means of a slidable bolt 46 around which a spring 41 isfitted holds the tear tab T prior to its severance against a portion of the wrapper web W previously coated with-adhesive or "Cellosolve. In case coated Cellophane is used 'for the wrapper and tear tab material, Cel1osolve". may be applied to the web W to cause the tear tab strip to adhere thereto. The nicking knives 48 (Fig. 6) cut into the outer seam edge of the Cellophane wrapper web W at 48a at either or both sides of the tear tab as shown, (Fig. 7) while the same is being held (Fig. 3) by the pressure pad ll against the adhesive applied previously at A (Fig. l). The nicking at either or both sides of the tear tab T will facilitate rupturing of wrapper as indicated in dot-and-dash lines at A. A paster or dauber of any well-known construction (not shown) may be located at B to apply adhesive or "Celloso1ve tothe web w.
The wrapper web W is fed from a reel R supported on a stud I! of frame II, by a pair of feed drive and control mechanism F whereby the feeding of the wrapper material is synchronized with the tear tab strip.
The cigars C which are to be wrapped are fed from a table I1 (Fig. 5) intermittently by pusher finger 5! to a pair of'oscillating transfer arms 5! fixed to a shaft 60. The transfer arms 5! take one cigar C at a time and push it together with the wrapper blank W to which hasbeen aflixed the tear tab T, into a turret pocket (not shown) thereby folding the wrapp r about three sides of the cigar. Upon leaving station I of the turret the tabbed or outer seam edge of the wrapper enfolding the cigar C indicated in dot and dash lines (Fig. 5) will be folded by a stationary plate 6 l over the inner seam edge which has pre- ,viously been folded inwardly by folder If. After enfoldment of the cigar has been completed, a heating element 6 2 at station I! vengages and effectively seals the wrapper seam edges to each provided with afusible coating they could be heat sealed to each other instead of adhesively secured. Instead of using coated transparent or translucent material, uncoated material of a cellulosic or other nature may be used. For example wrapper lengths from said web, members for feeding a web of tear tab material transversely of the web of wrapping material and severing tear tabs therefrom of a length shorter than the width of the wrapper lengths, mechanism for securing the severed tear tabs to one margin of the wrapping material, and a device for lapping the margins of the tabbed wrapper upon each other to envelope an article with a tab protruding from the seam so formed.
2. The combination with means for feeding a web of wrapping material, of a cutter for severing wrapper lengths from said web, mechanism for securing tear tabs to one longitudinal margin only of the wrapping material, a device for lapping the longitudinal margins of the tabbed wrapper upon each other to envelope an article with a tab protruding from the seam so formed, and a member for g the outer seam edge of the wrapping material adjacent the tabbed portion thereof;
