Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES NAUGHTEN, OF OINCINXATI, OHIO.
REFRIGERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,897, dated October 26, 1858.
To all whom it may con-cam:
Be it known that I, JAMES NAUGHTEN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Refrigerators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon and made to form a part of this specification.
Similar letters refer to like parts of the i m provement.
My invention relates to an improvement in refrigerators for preserving meats, etc., and consists in a peculiar arrangement whereby I am enabled to prevent the warm air from entering the ice compartment when the door of the refrigerator is opened thereby causing a great saving of ice, as hereinafter described.
This invention is exceedingly simple and requires but little explanation to be clearly and fully comprehended. The ice compartment is arranged at one side of the refriger ating box or room, and is constructed with the division (B), inclined bottom (C) (D) and waste pan (E), the ice being placed upon the bars (F) which rest upon the bottoms (C, D), and as the air is cooled by the ice and passes down through the opening formed by the division (B) and the inclined bottom (D) and circulates throughout the preserving or refrigerating compartment. As the temperature of the air becomes higher the air rises and passes through the opening (G) above the division (B) and through the ice box, so causing a free circulation and rotation of air within the entire apartment, when the door (J is opened the communication of air between the ice box and the refrigerating compartment by means of valves (H I) pivoted at (a, a) to the sides of the ice box. These valves are operated by opening and closing the door (J) through the medium of the rod (K) which connects with the upper part of the valve (H) and passes along the top of refrigerating compartment, supported by the loop (L) and comes in contact with the door (J when it is closed. The valve is connected with the lower valve (I) by means of the rod (M) so that the two valves act together. )Vhen the door is opened the valves fall by their own weight and close the openings to the ice box thus automati- Cally shutting out the warm air from the ice box and preventing an unnecessary consumption of ice.
)Vhat I claim as new, of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' ent, is:
The combination of the valves (H, I) and rods (M, K), arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
