INVENTOR .1055 /7 60E6 50/? V0! //V0 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 6, 1940 COMBINATION SMOKING PIPE, CIGARETTE HOLDER, AND SALIVA TRAP Joseph I George Sciavolino, Hoboken, N. J. Application August 6, 1938, Serial No. 223,397
1 Claim. (Cl. 131211) This invention relates to combination smoking pipes and cigarette holders. It-is particularly directed to a pipe having a stem which may be :used as a cigarette holder.,
and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafterdescribed, 20 and ofwhich the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention, 25 Figure 1 is an axial, elevational, cross-sectional view of a combination pipe and cigarette holder embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is an axial, cross-sectional View of the stem of the pipeused as a cigarette holder;
- 30 and Figure 3 is an axial, elevational, cross-sectional view, similar to Figure 1, but illustrating a modified construction.
Referriing now in detail to the drawing, Ill
35 designates a combination pipe and cigarette holder embodying the invention. The same comprises a member H having a bowl portion 12 and a shank portion l3, extending at right angles to the bowl. The shank portion l3 has a 40 reduced cylindrical portion [4 formed with a conical end surface l5. The shank I3 has an axial through bore It extending from the bottom of the bowl to the apex of the conical portion or surface i5.
5 Frictionally attached to the shank I3 is a stem H, which may be used as a cigarette holder, as will be explained hereinafter. The stem l'l tapers toward the tip l8, which is received within the mouth of the smoker, and has a socket [9 5 at the larger end, adapted to frictionally receive the cylindrical portion I4 of the shank. The
outer end 20 of the stem ll abuts the shoulder- 2I of the shank at the reduced portion M; The socket I9 is longer than the cylindrical portion 55 I4, and the bottom of the socket is formed with An object of this invention is to provide a a conical surface 23. The stem has a'narrow through opening 24, communicating with the socket l9.
Extending within the through bore 16 of the shank I3, is a metal pipe 21 having a conical portion 28 at one end receiving and contacting the conical portion [5 of the shank.
It will now be understood that saliva will be trapped in the space between the portion 28 of member I6 and the bottom 23 of the socket I9. The saliva so trapped may be readily cleaned out.
The stem Il may be removed from the shank, and a cigarette 30 may be inserted within the socket l9. Any suitable absorbent material 3| may be placed into the bottom of the socket 19 to absorb nicotine or saliva.
In Figure 3 there is shown a pipe Illa. illustrating a modified form of the invention. In Figure 3 there is disclosed a member 4|] comprising a bowl portion 4| and a shank portion 42. The shank portion 42 is formed with a socket 43 and with a through opening 44, communicating with the bottom of the bowl and with the socket 43.
Attached to the member 45 is a metal member 45 comprising a central collar portion 46, engaging the outer end of the shank 42, a tubular portion 41 disposed within the socket 43, and a reduced portion 48 disposed within the through opening 44.
Extending from the collar 46 is an axial, externally screw threaded portion 49, from which there extends a conical portion 50. The member is provided with an axialthrough opening,
as shown in the drawing. 35 N Screwed to the'screw threaded portion 49 is a stem 52 formed with a socket 55 to provide a chamber between the portion of member 45 and the bottom of said socket. The bottom 56 of the socket may be conical, as shown in 40 Figure 3,
It will now be understood that the pipe Illa.
may be easily disassembled and assembled, and
changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all -matter herein set forth or shown in the accom- 55 panying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A smoking pipe comprising a member having a bowl portion, and a shank extending therefrom, said shank being formed with a reduced cylindrical portion, the outer end of said cylindrical portion being conical, and said shank being formed with a through opening extending from the bottom of the bowl to the apex of said conical portion, a member made of metal having a pipe portion extending within said through opening and having a conical portion at one end of said pipe portion receiving the conical portion of the shank, and a stern having a socket at one end receiving the cylindrical portion of the shank, said socket being of such length as to provide a chamber between the conical portion of said metal member and the bottom of said socket.
