IMPROVEMENT IN HATS AND OTHER HEAD-COVERINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,915, dated August 26, 1879; application filed June 26, 1879.
- To all whom it may concern:
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists of a head-covering formed of two layers of canton-flannel, with exposed nap, and an intervening layer of buckram or other similar material, united and pressed, either or both layers of canton-flannel being finished with the nap partly laid smooth and partly shaggy.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a hat formed of two layers, b c, of canton-flannel and an intervening layer, d, of buckram. The function of this intervening layer (1 is to support the two layers 1) c of canton-flannel, and it is obvious that other materials besides buckram may be used for the purpose.
In carrying out my invention I unite the three layers 1) o d by a suitable adhesive substance, arranging the canton-flannel with the nap exposed, and then press the fabric thus obtained in any usual or suitable manner to form a head-covering of the desired shape or character.
After pressing the article I finish the outer layer, b, of canton -flannel by laying smooth that part of the nap which is on the crown of the hat and roughing that part which is on the brim, so as to give this part of such layer a shaggy appearance. For the purpose of smoothing the nap on the outer layer, I), I first use a brush or card and then ahot iron. I also use a brush or card to give the hat the desired shagginess on the brim.
The inner layer, 0, of canton-flannel may .be finished by brushing or carding its nap, or it may be left unfinished. In some cases I rough that part of the nap on the inner layer, 0, which is on the brim of the hat, so that both sides of the brim have a like appearance.
By my invention I obtain a head-covering which has a very rich appearance without being costly, the nap of the canton-flannel giving to the article the appearance of fur, while the materials used are extremely cheap.
By the peculiar arrangement of the nap of the canton-flannel the fur-like a1')pearance of the hat is promoted, and a contrast is produced between the crown and the brim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A head-covering formed of two layers of canton-flannel, with exposed nap, and an intervening layer of buckram or other similar material, united and pressed, substantially as described.
2. A head-covering formed of two layers of canton-flannel, with exposed nap, and an intervening layer of buckram or other similar. material, united and pressed, either or both layers of canton-flannel being finished with the nap partly laid smooth and partly shaggy, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of June, 1879.
