Claims.
The invention relates to footwear and especially to rubber footwear of the overshoe or galosh type. The invention is useful especially in overshoes of the type having a vamp portion extendl ing upwardly to provide a shield overlying forward portions of the quarters.
The chief object of the invention is to provide an improved attachment of the quarter to the vamp so that While the overshoe is adapted to be effectively retained on the foot, Wide opening of the overshoe is made possible so that putting the I overshoe on and taking it off are facilitated. A
further object is to provide the attachment of the quarter and upper of such construction and location as to be most effective for a hinging action of the vamp and quarters when it is desired to turn down their top portions, individually or together.
Further objects are to provide for strength of attachment with minimum bulk and weight and to provide attractiveness of appearance.
These and further objects will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:
26 Fig. l is a perspective view of a womans overshoe constructed according to and embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same shoe with the shield portion of the vamp turned down.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same shoe with parts broken away to illustrate features of construction.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along the line 4 4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. l.
The invention as illustrated in the drawing is applied to an overshoe of the womens galosh type in which a vamp I0 is upwardly extended to provide a shield I I overlying the forward portions of quarters I2, I3 which are adapted to enclose the ankle portion and extend around the rear. I
The overshoe comprises a heel I4, a sole I5 to which the upper of the overshoe is secured, a sole filler I6 and an insole Il. The overshoe may be constructed chiey of rubber, preferably lined and reinforced by a lining I3 of stretchable fabric for the quarters and a lining I9 of stretchable fabric for the vamp. A suitable fastener 20 may be provided at the forward margins of the quarters to secure them beneath the covering shield II.
In the region overlying the instep of the overshoe the vamp is slitted at 2| at each side there- (Cl. Sii- 7.3)
of, the slits extending from the sole upwardly across the instep part way as shown in Fig. 3. The forward margins 22 .of the quarters are inserted through the slits and preferably partly overlie the outer surface of the vamp where they 5 are secured, as by adhesion. Pieces 23, 24, preferably fabric reinforced as at 25, are mounted at the outside of the upper overlying the slots 2i and are adhered both to the vamp and to the exposed portions of th-e quarters by an adhesive 10 26. This provides a strong attachment of the quarters to the vamp and an attractive appearance without requiring an excessively bulky construction.
The location of the attachment well forward 15 on the instep portion of the overshoe and toward the bottom thereof provides a transverse hinging line low on the vamp and the quarters located so as to make possible a very wide opening for putting on and taking off the overshoe. 20 Also, the shield I I of the vamp and the quarters I2 and I3 may be folded down, either independently or together when not needed, so that a large part of the upper portion of the foot is exposed for ventilation. This is useful especially 25 in changeable weather when rain is intermittent, and it is useful also in theatres and other places where it is inconvenient to remove the shoe and a folding down for ventilation increases comfort to the wearer. 30
A strong anchorage of the forward margins of the quarters to the vamp is provided without the necessity of `extending such margins entirely down to the bottom of the shoe for anchorage to the sole and a material reduction in the bulk of 3`5 the shoe thus results. At the same time strength vof attachment is provided while the hinging line is located well forward on the instep for most effective opening. The rear margins of the vamp Il! may be extended well to the rear of the instep 4 preferably in the region of the shank portion of the shoe asshown so that the shield II may be well curved over the quarters to facilitate the retention of its shape resiliently in its upright position. 45
Variations may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as it is hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
l. An article of footwear comprising a quarter 50 portion having a forward margin and a vamp overlying said portion, said vamp being transversely slitted and the forward margin of the quarter extending through the slit in the vamp and being secured thereto at the slitted portion. u
2. An article of footwear comprising a quarter portion having a forward margin, a vamp overlying said portion, said vamp being transversely slitted in the region of the instep and the forward margin of the quarter extending through the slitted Vamp and being secured thereto at the slitted portion, and a reinforcing piece overlying the slitted portion and adhered both to the vamp and the exposed forward margin ofthe quarter.
3. A rubber overshoe comprising a sole and an upper thereon including quarters having separable forward margins, a vamp overlying the forward portions of said quarters, said vamp being transversely slitted and portions of the forward margins of the quarters extending through the slits in the Vamp, a reinforcing piece overlying the slittecl portions of the Vamp and adhered both to the vamp and the exposed forward margins of the quarters, and fabric linings adhered to the quarters and vamp, said linings extending into the region of the slits in the vamp.
4. A rubber overshoe as dened in claim 3 in which the said reinforcing piece is fabric lined.
5. A rubber overshoe comprising a sole and an upper thereon including quarters extending about the ankle portion and having separable front margins, means detachably securing together said front margins, a vamp extending rearwardly to the shank region and upwardly to provide a shield adapted to cover the front margins of the quarters, said vamp having slits therein extending upwardly part way across the instep portion from the region of the sole, portions of the forward margins of the quarters extending through said slits and being adhered to the outer surface of the vamp, and a reinforcing piece overlying said slits and adhered to the vamp and to the portions of the quarters extending through said slits.
