Description
P. MILS. Gover-Pas'tener for Jar, 8m.
Patented Aug. 26, 1879.

;UNIrEn-;STATES -PATENT OFFICE PUROHEs MILEs, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AsslGNoR To HENRY W.
PurNAm OF BENN'INGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVER-FASTENERS FOR JAR\S, 8100.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,824, dated August 26, 1879; application filed 'March 28, 1879.
To all 'whom 'it may concem:
Be it known that I, PURoHEs'MILEs, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved CoVer-Fastener for J ars, Bottles, and Cans, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a Vertical central section of a jar or bottle closed with my improved coverfastener. Fig2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the bottle, showing it opened; Fig.4, a top view of same. Big. 5 is a central section of a modification thereof, showing it closed upon the bottle; Fig. 6, a side view thereof, showing the bottle opened.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
For carrying milk and other liquids in bot- `tlcs`it is desirable to provide a means for readily closing and opening the bottles, and for readily cleaning the same and their covers or stopples. To this end, wide-mouthed bottles or jars are desirable, as they permit the convenient .application of a brush or wiper for thoroughly cleaning, and also as they enable the more rapid pouring of milk or other liquid into and from the same.
It is the object of my invention to provide for such large-mouthed bottles or jars a stopper which can be easily kept clean, and which,
is readily opened sidewardly and closed, and has other advantages hereinafter pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA represents a large-mouthed bottle, jar, or can of suitable kind. B is a neck-Wire, placed under the head of the bottle, around the neck or contracted portion thereof. Wire is secured by suitable means, or on it is formed, an upright loop or eye, O, in which the cover-holder D is swiveled. This coverholder is made of Wire, and is so bent or formed as to constitute au upright stem, a, a coiled spring, b, and an upper cross-bar, d. The stem a is inserted within the loop O, and is free to turn therein.
If the invention is applied to a can, the loop O can be soldered or otherwise attached to the To this neck-- can, so that the neck-Wire may be dispensed with.
E is the cover or stopper. I prefer to make it of Wood; but it may also be made of glass, earthenware, metal, or other suitable material. This stopper is large enough to close over the mouth of the bottle, and may have a centralor a circumferential downward projection for properly centering it on the bottle.
An eye, e, on top of the stopper or cover serves to receive the bar d of the'holder D, in manner' shown. Two or more such eyes e may be used. Thus the stopper is suspended from and free to vibrate on the bar d, and also free to vibrate, With the holder D,*on the upriglit stem a. The spring b serves to press the closed cover tight upon the mouth of the vessel; but it allows the cover, nevertheless, to be readily sprung open and swung aside, as in Figs. 3 and 4. The coil of the spring b may also serve as a Suspension-loop for carrying the vessel on a finger.
The end of the bar d may be looped, as in Fig. 1, to prcvent the detachment of the cover from the holder D, or it may be bent down, as
in Fig. 5, and sprung over the bottle-neck to act as a lock When the bottle is closed.
It will be perceived that the eye e is Vertical and parallel to the stem a whenever the apparatus is applied to a bottle as in Fig. 1, and that thereby the horizontal pivotal movement of the cover on the pivot a is insured.
The stem a being in substantially the same plane as and at an angle with dywhen a is inserted in'a Vertical eye in or attached to the vessel, the stopper is thrown over the vessel in a position to be pressed onto or into the neck of the vessel by the spring b.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the cover E with the spring-bar b d, from which it is suspended by an eye or eyes, e, and which is provided with the stem a, which is in substantially the same plane with and at au angle with d, and enables the spring-bar to have a horizontal pivotal movement to and from the mouth of the vessel when attached thex'eto, substanneck-wire B with the upright loop C, attached tia-lly as specified. to said neck-wire, an1 with the spring-bar D,
2. The combination of the cover E with having pivot-stem a, and cover 1*),substantially the spring-bar D, having stem a, and with the as herein shown and described.
upright loop or eye C, and vessel A, for op- PURUHES MILES. .eration substantially as herein shown and de- VVitnesses: seribed. EDWARD L. SWIFT,
3. The combination of the vessel A and W. A. RooT.
