4 Claims.
This invention relates to guns, and more particularly to a means for changing the angular relation or pitch of the gun barrel relative to i the gun stock, It An object of this invention is to provide means insertible between the forward end of the gun stock and the rear end of the breech whereby the angular relation of the gun barrel relative to the stock may be changed to suit the desires of the individual user of the gun.
Another object of this invention is to provide a means in the form of a shim which is adapted to be inserted between the gun stock and the breech so that if desired the angular relation l of the barrel and the stock may be changed, or the position of the barrel relative to the gun stock may be varied by moving the gun barrel forwardly.
Y A further object of this invention is to provide an insertible member adapted to be inserted between the gun stock and the barrel for changing the position or angular relation of the two parts relative to each other without the necessity of materially changing either of these parts so that an ordinary mechanic may easily and quickly change the position of the gun barrel as to the gun stock, the device being so formed and constructed that if desired the original relation of the two parts of the gun may be restored.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the system consists of the novel construction, combinationand arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing, the character G designates generally a gun including a barrel B provided with a breech IIJ to which is secured a gun stock II. The gun herein disclosed is a conventional shot gun of the repeater type and it l will be understood that the hereinafter disclosed 5 pitch changing device may beapplied to guns of various types including pistols, wherein it is desired to change either the angular relation of the gun barrel relative to the gun stock, or to lengthen the gun stock so as to move the breech lo forwardly the desired distance.
In the manufacture or production of guns a substantial standard is used as to -the length of the stock, so that the breech and the rear end of the barrel will be positioned at the desired 1 distance where the barrel is in proper alignment with the eye for the purpose of sighting along the barrel. Where a special gun stock is manufactured the correct position of the barrel B and the breech I0 may be readily determined.
However where the gun or firearm is manufactured according to a predetermined standard, the position of the barrel B is frequently inconvenient to a particular user, and it is necessary for a gun-smith to either produce a new gun stock where the stock should be longer, or to cut offA the old stock where it is necessary to shorten the original or standard stock. Where it is desired to increase the length of the gun stock, it has been the practice to cut the gun stock at an intermediate point `and then insert aspacer member `at such intermediate point, but this procedure involves considerable expense and requires the services of .an expert.
In order, therefore, to provide a means whereby the stock II may be lengthened, or the pitch of the barrel B may be varied without cutting of the stock II, I have provided a plate I2 in the form of a shim which is adapted to be inserted between the rear end of the breech Ill and forward end of the stock II. 4This platel I2 has a configuration in front elevation similar to the configuration of the rear endof the breech I0 being of substantially oval configuration so that the marginal portions of this plate I2 are flush with the outer surfaces of the stock H and the breech I0.
In side elevationthe plate I2 may be provided with one surface I4 thereof which is disposed on an angle to the other or rear side I5 thereof. The rear side IEis adapted toabut against the forward end of the stock II and the front side I4 is adapted to abut against the rear end of the breech IIJ. The angle between the front side I4 and the rear side I5 may be varied depending upon the change which it is desired to make between the angular relation of the barrel B and the gun stock II. In the present instance the Wider portion of the plate I2 is lowermost so that the angle between the barrel B and the stock'l I is increased, but it will be understood that if desired the Wider portion of the plate I2 may be at the upper end thereof where it is desired to decrease the angular relation of the barrel B relative to the stock II.
The plate I2 is provided on its forward side with a substantially annular lrib or bead It which is adapted to engage in an annular socket I3 provided in the rear end of the breech I0. In the present instance the breech I0 is provided with a. rearwardly extending lug I1 having a threaded opening I8 for receiving a bolt I9 which extends through a rearwardly extending lug 2li provided ina portion of the breech mech-v anism IG. The plate I2- is provided with an axially or centrally disposed opening 2| and a slot 22 extends from the opening 2.! and communicates with a relatively larger slot 23 in which the lug 2l! is received.
The rear side i5 of the plate I2 is provided with an annular recess or vsocket 24 in which is received annular bead 25 formed in the forward end of the gun stock II. f A rearwardly -extending sleeve 2t is carried by the breech lll and is provided with a threaded bore 2l'. This sleeve 26 engages in a bore 2B provided in the gun stock II, and a bolt 22 is threaded into the sleeve 21. The bolt 29 is provided with a head 32 having a kerf 3l, and the forward side of thehead 30 is provided with a convex or rounded surface 32.
A washer 33 is disposed about the bolt 29 andy is provided with a concave seat @Il toreceive the convex head so that when the angular relation of the stock I I is varied from the breech Ill, the bolt 29 may automatically adjust itself, and the head 3i? of the bolt will snugly seat on the washer or plate 33. A spring washer 35 is interposed between the seat vmember 33 and a shoulder 36 provided interiorly of the gun stock II at the `rear end of thel bore 28.
In the use of this device, where it is desired to change the angular relation between the barrel B and the stock II and the angular relation is' increased, the plate I2 is formed asshown in Figures l and 2 with a wider portion lowermost and with the outer face I Il thereof inclined at the desired angle .relativeto the innenface I 5. The gun as originally produced includes the bolt 29 having a flat head and this bolt is then either replaced by a bolt having a head convex at its forward side or the head of the original bolt is rounded off so as to provide the convex portion 32.
A washer 3E is then mounted about the bolt 29 so that the convex head 32 will snugly seat on the seat 3d of the washer 33. The bore- 28 of the stock II may require a slight reaming out so that the sleeve 26 may adjust itself in the bore 28 to the new angle between the stock I I and the breech IIB. This reaming out of the bore 2li is the only change which is required in the original stock II. No lother change is necessary in the stock II nor in the breech I8. The plate I2 is provided with the lbead I6 on its forward side and with a socket or annular groove on its rear side to conform to the connection between the original stock il and the breech II).
It will be understood that this bead connection will probably be varied depending on the particular conguration ofthe connection between the stock II and the breech I0 in various types of firearms.
Where it is desired only to move the barrel B forwardly a slight distance without changing the angular relation of the barrel B relative to the stock II, the plate or shim I2 will have parallel front and rear sides. Where it is desired to reduce the angle between the barrel B and the stock II, the plate I2 will have a wider upper edge than the lower edge, this angle being determined in advance in accordance with the desire of the user of the gun.
In the event it should be found desirable at a later date to restore the gun G to its original condition, this may be done easily and quickly by loosening the bolt 29 and removing the plate I2.` `The bead 26 at the forward end of the stock I I willthen seat directly in the annular groove I3 at the rear of the breech I0.
This device may be manufactured at a relatively` small cost and may be applied either by the user of the gun or by a mechanic who is not particularly skilled in the manufacture or repair of guns. It will be seen therefore that a gun manufactured after a well-known standard can easily and quickly be changed or individualized to suit the desires of a particular user in order that the gun barrel will be in the position desired by the particular user.
It is well known that expert riflemen usually require considerable changes in guns after the manufacture of the guns, and heretofore such changes have been an expensive proposition and have required the services of an expert gunsmith. These changes usually take the form of variation in the angular relation between the gun barrel and the gun stock, or take the form of an increase in the length `of the gun stock so as to move the breech or rear end of the gun barrel further away from the standard gun stock.
With the use of this device the standard gun can easily and quickly be individualized and at a relatively small cost, the change in the gun being of such a character that if desired the gun can .easily and quickly be brought back to its original standard condition.
What I claim is:
1. A means for varying the angular relation between a gun barrel having a breech at the rear end thereof and a gun stock, comprising a plate tapering in thickness from one edge to an opposite edge, the opposite faces of said plate having a configuration coincident with the joint between the breech and stock, said plate being positionable between the breech and stock.
2. As a new article of manufacture a pitch varying device for varying the pitch of a gun barrel relative to the gun stock comprising a wedge-shaped plate engageable between the barrel and the stock, an annular bead on one face of. said plate engageable inan annular groove provided in the .rear end of the barrel, the opposite face of said plate having an annular groove to receive an annular bead carried by the gun stock,
3. A means for varying the angular relation between the rear end of a gun barrel and a gun stock, comprising a plate tapering in thickness from one edge to an opposite edge and adapted to be interposed between the rear end of the barrel and the gun stock, the opposite faces of said plate having means engageable with the barrel and the stock to yhold the plate against lateral movement. A means for varying the angular relation between the rear end of a gun barrel and a gun stock, comprising a plate tapering in thickness from one edge to an opposite edge and adapted to be interposed between the rear end of the barrel and the gun stock, the opposite faces of said plate having means engageable with thev barrel and the stock to hold the plate against lateral movement, said plate having a central opening therethrough and a radially disposed slot extending from said opening to an edge of the plate.
