4 Claims. (01.122-510) My invention relates to a portable boiler for use in oil field work. I Generally the equipment used in the drilling of an oil well must be frequently movedfrom one location to a new location upon the completion of the well, the entire equipment being used only during the drilling of the well. This requires a moving of the steam boilers that supply steam for driving the drilling equipment. These boilers are .1 usually fire tube boilers having a fire box at the rear and a steam generating cylindrical part containing the fire tubes extending forwardly from the fire box and ending in the smoke box. Sometimes a superheater is attached to the front end 1455' of'the smoke box part of the boiler.. These boilers are generally heavy and diflicult .to handle and the frequent movings tend to weaken the boiler structure.
My invention provides a means whereby the 20 handling or moving of these boilers is greatly i ing and handling this part of the boiler. Inasmuch as it would be undesirable to secure the skids to the water space of the boiler by bolts or anchoring means passing through an opening into the water space of the boiler,.the skids are a secured about the steam generating part of the i r by means of an inverted U-shape band or rod that passes over the boiler, and is secured at its lower ends by a cradle fastened to the skids, so that as the U-shaped rod is tightened on to the cradle or saddle it grips the cylindrical part of the boiler tightly to the skids. The skids may be secured to the forward smoke box end by brackets in which it is riveted, inasmuch as there is no disadvantage in openings passing through the smoke box walls. The superheater chamber, which is in effect an extension of the smoke box, may simply be secured to the skids by clamping to. the skids either directly or through spacing beams or bars if necessary. Preferably the strap or bolt that holds down the high pressure steam and water cylinder of the boiler lies between pairs of spaced rivet heads so that it is prevented from slipping longitudinally of the cylindrical part. Flange unions are used in connecting the steam lines of the boiler to the superheater and to takeoff pipes so that the boiler and superheater may be readily disconnected preparatory for moving. The various features of the invention are illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which- 5 Fig. 1 .is a side elevation; Fig. 2 a plan of a boiler embodying the preferred form of the invention; Fig. 3 is a section through the superheater; Figs. 4 and 5 are sections through the smoke box and steam generating parts of the boiler with the fire tubes omitted on the lines I-'4 and 55 respectively; and Fig. 6 is a section of a part of the boiler taken on lines 66 of Fig. 5.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is shown as applied to a fire tube boilerhaving a' fire box III, a steam generating cylindrical part I I extending forwardly thereof and a superheater I2 secured forwardly of the cylindrical part II.
A pair of skids I3 and I4 are placed in spaced parallel relation'below the cylindrical part I I and the superheater I2 of the boiler, being secured and'spaced at their front ends by the tubular cross piece I5. The skids I4 may be upturned as at I6 at their frontends. They may be of any suitable construction but preferably are of I or H beam construction.
A supporting cradle I1 is mounted at the rear ends of the skids I3 and I4 being bolted or riveted to the skids as at I8 and having a supporting upper surface of cylindrical curvature on which rests a cylindrical shell II. At the upper ends of the cradle I! are provided outwardly projecting ears I9 and 20 through which extend the downwardly projecting ends of an inverted 5 U-bolt 2|; Nuts 22 threaded onto the projecting ends of the bolt 2| may be tightened to clamp the bolt against the cylindrical shell II, thus gripping the latter tightly between the cradle and the bolt. Preferably the bolt 2I is positioned between closely spaced rivets 23 of the shell II so as to prevent slipping longitudinally of the shell. These rivets 23 may be arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or may be staggered. Through the above construction the steam generating high pressure shell II is tightly and firmly secured to the skids I3 and I4 without piercing the shell in any way.
At the forward or smoke box end of the shell I I a pair of upright brackets 24 and 25 are bolted onto the skids I3 and I4 and have upper surfaces that fit closely against the curving surface of the shell I I. Bolts 26 passing through the wall of the smoke box serve to secure it to the brackets 24 and 25, thus anchoring the forward part of the shell to the skids and holding it firmly braced in di'i position. Inasmuch as the water space of the boiler terminates short of the smoke box, there is no disadvantage in having the bolts pass through the wall of the shell II at this point.
The superheater I2 may be secured to the skids by means of bolts 21' engaging a pair of smaller I-beams 28 resting directly on the skids l3 and ii. The I-beams 28 may form individual skids for the superheater l2. The superheater l2may be disconnected as described in my co-pending application Serial No. 111,149 and moved with its individual skidsindependently of the boiler structure so as to lessen the combined weight that'it' is necessary to move at one time.
The steam takeoff pipe 29 of the boiler is connected to the inlet and outlet headers 30 and 3| of the boiler by flanged connections 32 (Fig. 1) and 33 (Fig. 2) so that the superheater may be disconnected from the boiler by disconnecting these flanged connecting unions 32 and 33. Suitable valves 34, 35, 36 and 3'! are provided at the ofitake, at the flanged unions 32 and 33 and between these unions for control of the fiow of steam. A flanged union 38 may be provided for the ofitake of steam from the superheater.
Through the above invention I have provided a means whereby skids may be secured to the cylindrical part of a fire tube portable boiler without weakening the water space of the boiler shell and in such a manner as greatly to strength?- en and stiffen the boiler assembly. The connections to the superheater also provide means whereby the latter may be readily removed from the boiler thus lessening its weight and reassembled with accuracy.
What I claim is:
1. In a steam boiler including a fire box, a cylindrical steaingenerating part extending forwardly from the fire box and ending in a smoke box, and including a high pressure water space adjacent the fire box, means for strengthening the boiler and facilitating the handling and moving of the boiler, said means comprising a pair of skid members having a length materially greater than the combined length of said cylindrical part and said smoke box andmeans to attach said skids in parallel spaced relation onto the under side of the cylindrical steam generating part of the said boiler. to extend forwardly I under and beyond the said smoke box, said means including a cradle secured to the skids and a loop member encircling the high pressure portion or" the boiler, said loop member being cletachably secured to the said cradle.
2. In the combination of claim 1, said means to attach the skids comprising a cradle provided with an upper supporting surface having a cylindrical curvature adapted to seat the said cylindrical part therein, a U-bolt adapted to encircle the said cylindrical part about the high pressure water space adjacent the fire box end, means to secure the ends of said U-bolt to the said cradle with the said cylindrical part seated in the cradle, means to secure one end of each said skid members to the bottom of the cradle in parallel spaced relation, means adjacent the opposite ends of the skids to secure the said ends in similar parallel spaced relation, and
meansto' secure the smoke box end of said cylindrical part to the said parallel spaced skids.
In a steam boiler including a fire box, a cylindricai steam generating part extending forwardly from the fire box and ending in a smoke box and including a high pressure water space adjacent the fire box, and a superheater chamber forwardly of said smoke box and detachably secured thereto, means for strengthening the boiler and facilitating the handling and moving oi' the boiler, said means comprisingv a pair of skid members having a-length materially greater than the combined length of said cylindrical part and said superheater chamber and means to attach said skids onto the under side of the cylindrical steam generating part and tothe bottom of said superheater chamber in. parallel spaced relation longitudinally the said part and cham-.
ber, said means including a cradle secured to the skids and a loop member encircling the high pressure portion of the boiler, said loop member being detachably secured to the said cradle.
4. In the combination of claim 3, said means to attach the skids comprising a cradle provided with an upper supporting surface having a cyllndrical curvature adapted to seat the said cylindrical part therein, a U-bolt adapted to encircle the said cylindrical part about the high pressure water space adjacent the fire box end, means to secure the ends of said U-bolt to the said cradle with the said cylindrical part seated in the cradle, means to secure one end of each said skid members to the bottom of the cradle in parallel spaced relation, means adjacent the opposite ends of the skids to secure the said ends in similar parallel spaced relation, means to secure the smoke box endof said cylindrical part to the said parallelspaced skids, asecond pair of skid members and means to attach the said second pair of skid members onto the bottom of said superheater chamber and onto the top of said first pair of skid members to thereby support the superheater chamber thereon.
