It will be observed by an inspection of-Fig. 1 that there are eight clips l5 at each end of each l printing plate.
Before the plates are applied to the turtles they are brought to proper relative register by any suitable means, such as the preregistering machine described in said copending application and in each plate a V shaped notch i9 is cut in each arcuate end of the plate. As shown, particularly in Figs. 6 and '7, each turtle isprovided with a pair of opposed vV blocks 20 adapted to enter the notches I9 so as to locate the plate accurately on the turtle.-

in Fig. 3`,l for the outer turtle and are moved into and out of clamping position by a tubular clamping screw 25. This tubular screw has a shoulder 26 which bears against the outer end of the clamp 23 while acollar 21 bears againstthe inner end plied to tighten the clamps upon the turtle.
The inside turtle l4'a is similarly Secured be- ,tween four pairs of clamps 32 and 33. Passing 501i through each hollow screw 25 is a screw rod 34 provided at its outer end with a squared head 36. This rod has a reduced extension 31 which passes through the clamps 32 and 33. A shoulder 38 is formed at the junction of the extension with the main body of the rod which bears against the outer end of the clamp 32. A collar 39 fixed upon the extension by a set-screw 40, bears against the inner end of the clamp 32. to hold the latter against longitudinal displacement with respect to the rod, although the rod may freely turn with respect to the clamp. The free end ofthe extension 31 has threaded engagement with the clamp 33 so that by applying a wrench tothe head 36 and turning the screw rod the clamps may be moved into or out of clamping engagement with the turtle. I
In order to center the turtle accurately with respect` to the cylinder, each turtle is provided with a transverse slot 42 (Fig. 7) adapted to be engaged by atongue or pin 43projecting from the slide 44 (Fig. 4) which is movable longitudinally of the cylinder in a recess 45 formed in the face ofthe cylinder. To adjust the slide longi- I tudinally we provide arod 46 which is tted to turn in a longitudinal bore infthe cylinder and which has threaded engagement with the slide 44. This rod is maintained against longitudinal displacement by a shouldered head 41 at its outer end and by an opposed collar 48 which bears against the outer end wall of the recess 45. The collar is secured to the rod 46, at desired adjustment, by a set screw 49. Obviously, by turning the rod 46 the turtle and the printing plate it carries may be adjusted longitudinally.
As shown in Fig. l, the rod 46 carries a calibrated disk 50 and there is a reference point 5| marked on the end of the cylinder so that the position of the turtle longitudinally of the cylinder may be adjusted to a normal position by turning the rod 46 until a zero point on the calibrated disk registers with the reference point 5I. When the turtle has to be adjusted out of normal position to take care of any displacement or growing of the plate carried thereby, the calibrations will aord a convenient means for determining how much the head 41 should be turned to restore the plate to proper registration in longitudinal direction.
A similar adjustment is provided for the inside printing plate |20.. In Fig. 1, I show the head 52 of a screw rod 53 for longitudinally adjusting the turtle l4a.. The screw rod 53, as shown in Fig. 5, extends through a bore in the cylinder into a recess 54, similar to the recess 45, and hasthreaded engagement with a slide 55 which bears a pin 56 adapted to engage a transverse slot 51 in said inner turtle. The head 52 may also be provided with a calibrated disk 59 and the end of the cylinder with a reference mark 60. It will be observed that although the slots 42 and 51 are not in alinement as the turtles are applied to the cylinder, nevertheless, they are symmetrically disposed with respect to the longitudinalr center lines of the turtles, so that either turtle may be turned end for end to bring the slot therein into position for engagement either bythe pin 43 or by the pin 56.
In order to provide for circumferential adjustment of the turtles, each turtle is provided along its longitudinal center line with a pair of diagonally disposed slots 62 which are adapted to be engaged by pins projecting from a slide adjustable longitudinally in the cylinder. The slide which controls the circumferential adjustment of the outer turtle I4 is shown at 64 in Fig. 6 and carries pins 63 engaging slots 62. This slide 64 is adjustable in a recess 65 formed in the cylinder and has threaded engagement with a tubular screw 66. The latter extends outwardly through a bore in the cylinder and is provided at its outer end with a'squared head 68. This screw is held against longitudinal displacement with respect to the cylinder by engagement of the head 68 with the outer end of cylinder I0 and by an Aopposed collar 69 secured to the sleeve by set screw 10 and bearing against the outer Wall of the recess 65.
The slide 12 which controls the position of the inner turtle 14a is similar in form to the slide 64 and bears pins 63a which engage the slots 62 of the inner turtle. The slide 12 has threaded engagement with a screw rod 13 which passes through the tubular screw 66 and terminates at its outer end in a square head 14. The rod 13 is prevented from longitudinal displacement with respect to the cylinder by a collar 15 secured thereto by means of a set'screw 16 and engaging the outer end of the recess 16 in which slide 12 is adjustable, the opposite end of this recess being engaged by the inner end of the rod 13.
