A collar positioned at the upper part of member 36 is bored so that it will not contact member 46. A coil spring 62 around member 46 and between collar 66 and the lower end of the member 46 urges said member 46, part 38 and ball bearing assembly downwardly so that the parts are elevated, as will hereinafter appear, against the action of the spring. As stated, the inner race 14 has an enlarged bore 56 therein so that the spindle [6 does not contact therewith.
A groove 6| in the part 60 receives a spring member such as 84 which bears in the groove and on part 46. This tendsto yieldingly maintain the parts in concentric relation, there being a space between member 46 and member 60, as shown in Fig. 5.
A cup 10 has a hub part 12 fixed to the inner ball race M and a skirt 16 extending downwardly outside the part 36. A belt groove 18 is provided whereby by means of a belt part the cup is 1'0- tated. The cup however may be rotated by any other suitable means There is a friction ring 80 in the cup 10 and another friction ring 82 on the lower side of the carrier I4.
As the cup is rotated and with a yarn or element extending through a guide such as G which may be disposed thereon and from the spool or a package on the spindle the package or spool will be rotated by the cup. The guide or guides if used on the cup may be of any form associated with the cup. The spindle speed will equal that of the cup plus an additional speed depending upon the amount of yarn which is taken up.
In devices of this type it is desired and is necessary to stop the cup or spindle quickly and to that end brak ng means is provided as follows.
The gear 30 has on its upper side one or more inclined cam surfaces I06 which cooperate with similar surfaces M2 on the lower side of the member 38. When the gear 30 is rotated the part 38 is cammed upwardly lifting part 46, ball bearing assembly and cup 10 so that the friction members 80 and 82 are brought into frictional engagement for the braking action, To accomv plish rotation of the gear 30 a lever I66 is pivoted at I08 to the base and it has on its end a gear segment llll which meshes with the teeth of the gear 30 as shown. As the lever I66 is oscillated it in turn oscillates gear 38 elevating the mounting for'the cup. A key 55 in member 38 is slidable in a keyway 41 of the hub 36 to prevent rotation of socket member 38.
The spool or yarn carrier 22 is provided with one or more projections in the form of fins H2. These offer resistance to air as the spool rotates and tend to retard its rotation or function as a braking means to tension the yarn as it is unwound from the spool. These may be mounted by means of screws H4 so their angularity may be varied and in any position of adjustment they offer a constant uniform resistance and therefore bring about uniform tension of the yarn.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the cup and spindle are separately mounted and out of contact so that one is not likely to transmit vibrations to the other while they may move or their axes may move relative to one another.
While I have described the invention in great detail and with respect to a preferred form thereof, it is not desired to be limited thereto since many changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a base, a spindle extending upwardly therefrom, a cup inclosing the spindle rotatably mounted on the base independently of the spindle, means to facilitate tilting of the cup relative to the spindle, means to facilitate reciprocation of the cup relative to the spindle, brake means operable as the cup reciprocates in one direction, means to reciprocate the spindle, and a yielding mounting for said spindle whereby it may tilt relative to the cup.
2. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a base, a spindle extending upwardly from and yieldably mounted on said base, a cup around said spindle for enclosing yarn thereon rotatable and yieldably mounted on said base for rotatable and tilting movements thereof relative to the spindle, and brake means acting to retard rotation of the spindle.
3. A device of the class described comprising in combination, a base, a relatively rotatable spindle and cup therearound for enclosing yarn thereon, separate yieldable mountings for the spindle and cup permitting relative tilting movements thereof.
4.An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a base, a spindle extend ing upwardly therefrom, a socket member reciprocable on said base and having a curved seat,
a member having a curved part resting on said curved seat, means to retain the curved part and seat in operable relation, and a cup rotatably mounted on said member and disposed around the spindle for enclosing yarn thereon.
5. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a base, a spindle extending upwardly therefrom, a socket member reciprocable on said base and having a curved seat,
a member having a curved part resting on said curved seat, means to retain the curved part and seat in operable relation, a cup rotatably mounted on said member and disposed around the spindle for enclosing yarn thereon, brake means associated with said spindle and cup operable as the socket member moves in one direction and means to move said socket member.
6. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a base, a spindle, a yieldable mounting for said spindle in said base, a socket member reciprocable in the base having a curved seat, a member having a curved part on said seat, a cup rotatably mounted on said member disposed around said spindle for enclosing yarn thereon, and spring means to retain the curved part on said seat.
7. An apparatus of the class described comprising in combination, a base, a yieldable mounting in said base, a spindle extending upwardly from said mounting, a member non-rotatable and reciprocable relative to said base having a curved seat, a cup around the upper end ofsaid spindle having a part seated in said curved seat, the said cup being rotatable relative to said part, and spring means associated with said part and base to retain said part on the curved seat.
