Thus, the framing 3 is ovaline as shown in Fig. 1 to conform to the shape of the hat body, and is adapted to receive the body 1 in an inverted positionandin the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. Within thel framing 6 is located the element 3, comprising 1a flat, metallic, tubular band 8, which extends parallel to the framing, is closed at one terminal 9 thereof, and has its opposite endportion I0. bent over as shown towards the centre of the framing, whereat its opposite terminal I I is secured vto yand I v leads into a vertically disposed tubular rock-shaft I2, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. The band 8 has its exterior wall I3 provided with a series of perforations I4 facing the framing 6, while its interior wall I5 is lined with an electric heating coil IB which is enveloped by an asbestos liningrv I1. Links I8 are pivotally joined to lugs I9 forming part of the rock-shaft I2 and to lugs 20 forming part of the tubular band 8, which is flexible. Rocking of vthe shaft I2 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1, therefore, transmits action through the links I8 to expand the ovaline band 8 toward the framing 6, while rocking said shaft oppositely contracts the band away from the framing to the position shown in Fig. 2. The l shaft I 2 is journaled in a hub 2| which forms part of the horizontal carrying lever 5 pivoted toa post 22 depending from the machine base 2, said lever being provided, with a counterweight 23 and finger-knob 24, and the shaft is further journaled through a T-fitting 25 and provided at its extremity With an operating handle 26 keyed thereto at 21. vA steam conducting pipe 28 isconnected to the opening 29 .of T-ftting 25 which is tapped at 33 to the lever 5, and the hollow shaft I2is provided with an inlet 3| in `alignment Withthe pipe v5 28. The hub 2l is surroundedlby a heatingcoil 32 which is enveloped by an asbestos lining'33, and electric current fed by wires34 and connecting Vconducting Wires 35 energizes said coil as well as the coils I6.` v For carryingout the process with this apparatus it is preferable to first prepare the hat lining 36, by utilization of a tape 31, made of duck or other suitable material andheavily impregnated with an adhesive substance, vwhich is nor- 1,5I mally dry but becomes ,dampy and very 'sticky when steam andheat lis applied thereto. Said tape is secured to the rim of lining 3B by a line of stitching 38, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
' i Normally, the entire apparatus is elevated over 20 and out of theframing 6,.as indicated by the dash and dot lines, Fig. 2, the counterweight- 23 maintaining the carrying lever 5 with all its depending partsY in uplifted state. When it is desired to attach the hat lining to the hat body, the latter 25 is linserted into the framingl 6, in the inverted position shown, then the lining 36 is placed within the ybody 1 in required location with its adxed tape 31, and then-the lever 5 is swung downwardly about its hinge 5a to its horizontal posi- 30 tion to bring the element 3 Within the framing 6 and level with the adhesive tape 31. The operative then turns the handle 26 in. a clockwise direction, to rock the shaft I2 and expand the band 8 into a pressing contact against the rim 35 effected. The lever 5 may be then elevated to conveniently remove the assembled hat and lin-vv ing from the machine.
The coils 32, I6 continually impart heat to the steam passageways and the band 8, whereby these 50 parts are maintained dry hot for the efficient working of the process. An adjustable stop is provided for` the lever 5, to alter the setting of the level elevation of the element 3 within the framing 6, vsaid stop comprising a projection 39 55 passing through registering slots 42 of both parts,
as shown in Fig. 2, said bolt being fastened upon `the elevational setting of the plate 40 against which the lever 5 abuts upon its downward throw.
Any other method, thanby the tape 31 shown,
may be resorted to for adhering the lining to the hat body, and should any adhesive substance be utilized which does not require any steam, the latter may be eliminated and the apparatus may be otherwise operated to impart requisite heat by coils 32, i6 to the expandingpressure-band'8. If an adhesive substance should be resorted to which does not require any heat, the apparatus may be operated without energizing the coils 32, I6.
Variations may be resorted to within theescope of theinvention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1..An apparatus for-assembling a hat lining with al hat body by adhesiveness having the combination of a bodyretaining framing configurated to-iit vthe body, an element havinga chamber with'perforated walls paralleling said framing and expansible and contractible toward and away from the framing, means for actuating said walls',
means to feed steam to said chamber, and a valve in said Asteam feeding means operated by said actuating means to admit steam to said chamber upon expansion of said walls and to shut off the steam upon contraction of the walls'.

An apparatus for assembling a hat lining With a hat body by adhesiveness having the combination of a body retaining framing configurated to t the body, an element having'a chamber with perforated walls paralleling said framing and expansible and contractible toward and away from the framing, means for actuating said Walls, means to feed steam to said chamber, and a valve in said steam feeding means to admit steam to said chamber upon expansion of said walls and to shut oi the steam upon contraction of the Walls,

An apparatus for assembling a hat lining with a hat body by adhesiveness having the combination of a body retaining framing configurated to fit the body, an element having a chamber with perforated walls paralleling said framing and expansible and contractible toward and away from theframing, a rock :shaft located centrally of said element, a plurality of links joining said shaft with said walls for actuating the walls,
means to feed steam. to said chamber, and a valve for'controlling said feed.

An apparatus for assembling a hat lining ,with a hat body by adhesiveness having the combination of a body retaining framing coniigurated to t the body, 'an element having a chamber with perforated wallsL paralleling said framing and expansible and contractible toward and away from the framing, means for actuating said walls, `means tofeed steam to said chamber, a valve in said steam feeding means to admit steam to said chamber upon expansion of said walls and to shut off the steam upon contraction of the Walls, and means to heat said element.
