' 1 Claim (01. ass-so) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mine rail tie and rail securing devices. w
The primary object of the invention is to provide a mine rail tie constructed of heavy gauge sheet metal having a central longitudinally extending knee pressed rib with the side edges of the tie bent downwardly and inwardly upon themselves to provide a longitudinally extending rib. at the bottom of each side edge of the tie in the plane of the knee pressed central 'rib forreinforcing the tie and providing ground anchor means. i v
A further objectof the invention is to provide a mine rail tie and rail securingdevice of the foregoing character wherein the securing means for each rail includes a rail engaging clamp rigid with the tie and a pair of rail engaging clamps supported by vertical pivots respectively on ears projecting laterally of each side of the tie with means on the tie for holding each of the pivoted rail engaging clamps in rail engaging position.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a mine rail tie constructed in accordance with the present invention, a pair of rails being fragmentarily illustrated as supported thereon with the devices for securing the rails in position on the tie, one
of the latter devices being illustrated by dotted lines in its rail releasing position;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the tie with the rails shown in cross-section;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2; showing, the pivotally mounted rail engaging clamps supported on. ears projecting laterally of the tie;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2, showing the longitudinally extending depressed rib and the turned under side edges of the sheet metal tie for reinforcing the tie and providing ground anchor means;' and Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, similar to Figure 4, of another form of tie with the rail omitted.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the mine rail tie 5 is constructed of heavy gauge sheet metal and as shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the upper face of'the tie has a central longitudinally extending V-shaped depression or groove 6 therein, defining a depending longitudinally extending tie reinforcing and ground anchor rib I of substantially V-shape as illustrated. As shown morelclearly in Figures 3 and 4, the longitudinal vside edgesof the tie 5 are bent downwardly and inwardly to lie beneath the tie in engagement therewith to provide ribs 8 cooperating with'the rib 1 for reinforcem'ent of the tie and to facilitate ground anchoring of the tie. .Suitable radial cuts are made in the side edges ofthe tie 5 so that 5 during the bending of such side edges to provide the reinforcing ribs 8; 'laterallyp projecting ears}! are provided for the pivotal supportof lying in rail securing devices with the ears 9 the plane of the tie 5. The tie 5 has rails l0 mounted thereon and the securing devices for each rail includea rail engaging clamp ll rigid with the tie 5 and engagedwith one side of the rail, while a pair ofpivotally mounted rail engaging clamps are mounted on the ears 9 for engagement with the other side of the rail. Each pivotally mounted rail engaging clamp arm designated in general by the reference character l2 has a pair of vertically spaced parallellegs -l3 'andsl l projecting from one side thereof to straddle'an ear 9 andbe pivotally mounted thereon by the pin or rivet l5, the upper leg l3 of the clamp being in a plane above the tie 5 and movable over the upper surface of the tie during adjustment thereof while the lower leg of the pivoted clamp is of a length relative, to the length and width of the ear 9 to permit free pivotal movement of the clamp on said ear as shown in Figures 1 to 3. The other sideof the rail engaging clamp 12 carries an upwardly directed arm 5 and a horizontally extending foot H, the arm Hi being engageable with the upper side of thebase flange of the rail I 0 while the foot I I is disposed beneath the base rail and in engagement therewith as shown in Figure 2. Each rail engaging clamp arm l2 has a latch rod [8 associated therewith for holding the clamp arm l2 inrail engaging position and as shown in Figure 1, the a latch rod I8 is pivoted as at [9 on the upper face of the rail 5 with one end thereof movable into engagement with the side of the upper leg l3 of the rail engaging clamp l2. 1
By locating the pivotal rail engaging clamps on the ears 9 in the plane of the tie 5, the clamps are lowered withrespect to the tie so that a minimum of obstructions is offered to The sheet metal tie shown in Figure 5 and designated by the reference character 5a has the side longitudinal edges thereof bent downwardly, inwardly, and then outwardly to provide a side edge reinforcement, foot, or rib 8a of three thicknesses, while the longitudinally extending v shaped depression to centrally of the tie 5a provides the central depending longitudinalrib 1a of the same depth as the side feet 8a for the proper reinforcement of the sheet metal tie. In bending the side edges of the tie to provide thev side edge supporting feet of three thicknesses, portions thereof are cut out and remain in the plane of the tie 5a to provide the laterally extending ears So for the pivotal mounting of a rail engaging clamp.
From the above detailed description or" the invention, it isbelieved that the construction and use thereof will at once be apparent and while there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is anchoring of the tie, rail securing devices carried by the: tie for each rail thereon comprising a rail engaging clamp rigid with the tie and a pair of rail engaging clamps respectively pivotally mounted at opposite side edges of the tie, the mountings for the pivoted clamps including ears projecting laterally of and in the plane of the tie, each pivotally mounted clamp including an overlying rail flange engaging lower cooperating rail flange engaging foot, and a pair of superposed spaced legs respectively disposed above and below said mounting ear with the lower side of the lower leg being in the plane of the lower sides of said tie ribs for frictional ground contact to prevent accidental pivotal movement of the clamp relative to the supporting ear and rail flange.
