To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL T. WELLS, of the cit of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of hio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Feeding Paper to Cylinder Printing-Machines, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This 'invention consists in mounting the nippers on a frame having a limited motion concentric with but independently of the cylinder, the object being to insure a more perfect feed by causing the nippers to seize the paper while in a quiescent state or moving in an opposite direction to the cylinder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of the cylinder and accessories of a machine embodying my improvements, Fig. 2 is an end elevation and Fig. 3 a longitudinal or axial section of the same. Figs. 4 to 8 inclusive are views illustrating the construction of the cams and cam ro 1, is the cylinder, the shaft 2, of which is journaled in standards S, to one of which is attached a stationary spur wheel 3.

a is a flat bar against which the nippers impinge in taking hold of the paper. The exterior surface of the bar al, is flush with the periphery of the cylinder. The shaft 11, on which the nippers vibrate 1s mounted at one end with a segmental pinion 111, which meshes into a corresponding one 9, of larger size which is also pivoted to the frame A.
p, is a stud projecting from the pinion 9, near its periphery and engaging as hereafter explained with a trip cam 6, attached to the cylinder.

The operation is as follows: The cylinder y being set in motion in the direction indicated by the arrow, the stationary wheel 3 causes the wheel 4, to revolve, and with it the cam 72, which by acting upon the friction roller t, impels the frame A, somewhat in advance of the motion of the cylinder, until the stud p, on the pinion 9, passing beyond the influence of the cam 6, the pinion 9, is rapidly rotated by means of the spring u, in such way as to open the nippers or throw them completely back. This position is shown in Fig. 1, where the cam 72, has impelled the frame A, to its farthest limit. As the cam "i2 continues to rotate its depressed portion allows the spring lo, to retract the frame, which is thus drawn suddenly back until arrested by a stop lo. At the same time the stud p, passing under the trip cam 6, rotates the nipper shaft thereby closing the nippers tightly down upon the bar al, at the instant they are in position to seize the edge of the paper, and the frame A with its appendage is then carried forward with the cylinder in its rotation. This position of the parts is exhibited in Fig. 2.
The spring o, may be entirely dlspensed with by employing a grooved cam 7 of the form indicated. A yoke 8 attached at one end to the frame A, and at the other conned in the groove of the cam 7 serves in this case to draw the frame against the stop 7c, the various parts operating as previously explained.
