The invention relates to a firearm of the magazine type and more especially to a releasable and interchangeable cartridge box magazine for firearms.

.The primary object of the invention is the provision of a magazine of this character, wherein its body is of box form and is adapted to contain cartridges, these being disposed therein in feeding relation to each other in a zigzag or staggered group or stack thereof and such magazine is separably fitted within the firearm in a cham- .;ber or receiver therefor, the firearm being constructed to shield or guard the magazine when therein so that seepage of moisture or water during inclement weather into such magazine at. the top thereof when the. firearm is in service at such'time will beavoided or prevented, the zigzag stacking of the cartridges within this magazine being effective for the placement of a greater number of cartridges than can be had by a straight stack, or, in other words, increasing the filling capacity of the magazine without increasing the depth or. height thereof.

Another object of the invention is the provision of .:a magazine of this character, wherein the constructionthereof enables the interchanging of .theJsame for quick loading and reloading of the firearm, the said magazine, when within the latter, being releasable therefrom by dual latching means at opposite sides of the stock of such firearm.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a magazine of this character, wherein its body is of box formation and the cartridges held therein are supported by a follower, spring advanced within the said body, so that the uppermost cartridge of the stack will be in a position for acceptance within the firearm and the said cartridges will be fed singly thereinto from the said magazine. 1

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a magazine of this character, wherein the construction of the same is novel in its entirety and especially in the detailed make-up of the same.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a magazine of this character, wherein its construction assures the quick insertion and ready removal to and from its receiving space within the firearm and such magazine when within the latter will be latched at opposite sides thereof to assure safety and also to enable quick removal as such magazine can be un latched only by operation of the latching means at both sides of the stock of the firearm.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a'magazine of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in operation, easy of fitting within a firearm and conveniently removable therefrom strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of a firearm, which is of the magazine type, the firing trigger of the said firearm being denoted at Ill, its guard at I l and built within such firearm isthe magazinereceiving space or well l2, which opens through the bottom side of the stock while the top of this space or well is permanently closed by the breech formation E3 of said firearm. Within the space or well I2 is adapted to be accommodated the cartridge magazine which constitutes the present invention and will be hereinafter fully described.

The cartridge magazine is denoted at Band comprises a hollow body having a basal piece It from which rise the side and end walls [5 and I6, respectively, of the said body, the latter being open at its top. The body with the side and end walls l5 and I6 is of a configuration corresponding to the configuration of the space or well l2 to be snugly accommodated therein while the basal piece I4 when the body is accommodated within the space or well closes the lower open end thereof and it has a contour following the shape or contour of the lower portion of the stock of the firearm, being flush with the external surface thereof when the magazine is fitted within the said firearm.

Struck outwardly from the sides I5 of the body of the magazine B are externally beveled keeper 1 gs or lips I'l, these being engageable with latches fitted in opposite sides of the stock, only one being shown in Figure l of the drawing and denoted at E8, and has associated therewith a fingeroperated release button l9 exposed for finger engagement. It is required that the latches at both sides of the stock of the firearm A be actuated for the removal or unlatching of the magazine B when fitted within the space or well [2 in the firearm. Each latch I8 shifts free of its companion keeper I! for the releasing of the said magazine when it is required to remove it from the firearm.

Arranged within the body of the magazine B is a follower 20 having a stepped upper side 2| and this follower is active upon cartridges 22 filling the magazine B, these being arranged in zigzag or staggered, stacked relation to each other when therein.

Between the basal piece M of the body of the magazine B and the follower 20 is an advancing spring 23, the end 24 thereof being made secure to the basal piece by a screw 25 while the end 26 is secured to the follower by a screw 21, the screw 25 being accessible through the open top of the magazine B by way of an opening 28 provided in said follower 20.

At the sides l5 of the body of the magazine A and overhanging the open top of the body of the latter are upwardly convergent retaining and guide flanges 29, these being extended only for a distance of the length of the sides [5, being protective for the cartridges 22 from the firing pin 30 of the firearm; The cartridges 22 within the magazine B when within the well or space l2 therefor, as created within the firearm A, will be brought into firing position through mechanism (not shown) and of standard make-up or as ordinarily associated with the standard types of magazine firearm. The flanges 29 constitute a check or side support abutment for the shell end of the uppermost cartridge, the said flanges being sloped properly in a longitudinal direction of the magazine B so as to assure the easy firing of the cartridges therein when the'said magazine B is removed from the firearm. These flanges 29 by reason of their extent in a longitudinal direction of the magazine B allow the exposure through the open top of the body of the bullet end of the uppermost cartridge of the stack filling said magazine so that such upper-most cartridge in single order will be advanced into the firing chamber or into firing position within the firearm.

The steps 2| of the follower 20 permit of alternate rest engagement of the cartridges stacked within the body thereon under the zigzag or staggered relation of said cartridges filling the same, the said follower 20 being tensioned by the inherent expansive resiliency of the spring 23 fitted within the body of said magazine.

What is claimed is:

A cartridge'magazine for a firearm having a magazine space opening through its lowermost '25 walls being disposed slightly inwardly with respect to the side and end edges of the basal piece, upwardly convergent retaining and guide flanges extended from the side walls and extendand an open top, respectively, the side and. end 30 ing for a distance of the length thereof, a stepped 86 follower plate movably fitted within the hollow body for rest of cartridges thereon in staggered disposition within said body, a compressible spring between the basal piece and said follower,

fasteners securing the spring to the basal piece and follower, respectively, said follower being provided with an opening confronting the fastening point of the spring with thebasal piece for access thereto, and meansv on the body adapted to cooperate with said firearm for securing said magazine in the magazine space.
