This invention relates to improvements in shaving devices and has that type of implement utilized to obtain a dry shave and wherein a cutter cooperates with a 5 shearing element to sever the hair.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved: device the construction of which is such as to produce a simple, comparatively inexpensive, and practical implement the elements of which can be readily assembled and taken apart, and from which the cut hairs can be easily removed.
Another object is to secure an effective cooperation between the shearing element and cutter which will enable a'close shave to be obtained, and to adequately reinforce and support the extremely thin face-engaging portion of the shearing element against such flexing thereof that would otherwise interfere with the proper operation of the cutter. e
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing the numeral 8 indicates a handle for the device by which it may be manipulated, with one end of the handle having therein a recess 9 in which the cutting head of the implement may be detacliably secured by a screw I0. Generally, 50 the cutting head comprises a receptacle I I on which is detachably mounted a shearing element I2 and within which there is disposed a supporting member I3 carrying a movable cutter I4 for cooperative relation with the shearing element I2. The receptacle II may be made from' sheet metal and stamped into channel formation with 10 open ends so that a trough-like body is provided consisting of a bottom I9 and side walls 20. Thi trough-like receptacle is adapted to receive therein the supporting member I3' which may also be ,s formed from sheet metal. Said member I3 in- 15 cludes the base 2|, the sides 22 and end flanges 23, the latter being of slightly greater depth than the sides 22 so that the lower edges of the flanges will engage the recess 24 at the ends of the bottom I9 of the receptacle II to retain the base 20 member against longitudinal movement in the receptacle after said member is disposed in its operative position therein. The sides 22 of the "supporting member engage the inner surfaces of the walls 20 of the receptacle and aid in supporting the same against any inward movement 1 which might otherwise interfere with the proper v operation of the cutter, particularly when thev screw I0 is fastened against one of the`-wal1s 20 when the cutting head is secured in position in 30 f' the handle.
Meansare provided in connection with the supporting member I3 for carrying the cutter I4 in` spaced relation thereto and for exerting a yielding pressure upon the cutter in thedirection of the shearing element I2 when the parts are in operative position, to thus maintain the'teeth 1- 25 of said cutter in cooperative relation with the blades 26 of the shearing element. of the cutter is accomplished by the provision of two leaf springs 21 carried by th-e supporting member I3. To secure each spring 21 in position on said member, the sides 2 -2 of lthe latter adjacent each end are cut to provide opposed instruck lugs 28 which are bent inwardly toward the base 2I of the member I3 toclamp' .one end of the spring 2l against the inner surface of said base. The other end of the spring is bowed as indicated at 29 and the extremity of said bowed portion extends outwardly through a longitudinal slot 30 formed iii the base 2|. The projecting 0 extremity of the portion 29 of the spring is reduced to provide supporting shoulders 3I and an extension 32, the latter projecting into an opening 33 formed in the bottom of the cutter I4 55 so that the latter will rest upon said shoulders and be supported thereby during the reciprocating movements of the cutter, the portion 29 of the spring then flexing in the opening 30 and, at the same time, exerting pressure against the cutter in the direction of the shearing element I2, By thus positioning the spring 21, it will also be apparent that as the cutter is reciprocated, the portion 29 of said spring will be flexed in the direction of movement of the cutter. Due to this flexing and the inherent tendency of said spring to restore to normal, the same will exert a pressure upon the cutter as the latter starts its movement in either direction from one extreme of its range of movement, and this pressure will therefore aid the cutter at the start of its movement and will, to some extent, relieve the torque on the driving element which operates the arm I5. Also, it will be noted that since the upper end of the portion 29 of the spring moves with the cutter as it reciprocates, friction between the spring and cutter is practically eliminated.
The cutter I4 may also be made of a sheet metal blank bent to form a substantially rectangular base portion 34, with contiguous abutting webs 35. The free longitudinal edges of the blank adjacent said webs are bent outwardly in opposed relation and each edge combines with the adjacent parallel portion of the base 34 to form a longitudinal channel 36 extending the length of the cutter. The teeth 25 are cut in each of said edges so as to form cutting edges which coact with the blades 26 of the shearing element.
At the ends of said edges relatively Wide portions 31 are provided which act as bearing surfaces for the ends of the shearing element and aid in reinforcing the latter against collapsing. At the inner adjacent ends of the opposed teeth 25 in the cutter the same are reduced and combine to form a. Vf'shaped groove 38 extending along the center of the cutting surface for a purpose which will later appear.
The shearing element I2', like the other elements of the cutting head, may be made fr om a metal blank bent into trough-like formation to provide a central face generally indicated at 39, and the sides 4l).` .Along the free edges of said sides there are provided laterally extending flanges 4I which are adapted to engage in grooves 42 formed in the free edges of the side walls 20 of the receptacle Il so that said shearing element may be slid into its operative position on said receptacle. To releasably maintain the shearing element in such position, the free edges of the receptacle are provided with opposed lugs 43 which project inwardly into correspondingly formed recesses 44 in the sides 40 of the shearing element.
The blank from which the s'nearing element I2 is made may be rst bent into th'e form described and thereafter slotted in the portions 39 and 40 thereof to form the blades 26, or said blank may be out to' form said blades before the bending operation. In either event the slots so formed in the edge portions of the central face 39, whether they be staggered or aligned with each other, terminate short of the medial longitudinal line of said face in order to provide a longitudinally extending reinforcing strip 45 in the face of the shearing element which will aid to prevent undue flexing thereof. When the element is in operative position. said strip 45 is aligned with the groove 38 in the cutter and combines therewith to form an open ended channel which may receive cut hairs which fail to fall between the teeth 25 into the channels 36 of the cutter, the latter channels being bounded along their outer edges by the sides 40 of the shearing element. the outer and inner surfaces of the face 39 are ground down until said face has been reduced to a thinness of approximately .004 of an inch or less, with the exception of the end portions 41 of said face which may be of slightly greater thickness than the remainder thereof so as to provide additional reinforcement for said face and form bearing surfaces for the end portions 31 of the cutter. Lastly, the leading edges formed by tapering the corners of the blades 26 may be buffed so as to round the same slightly as indicated at 48, thereby to minimize the possibility of said edges cutting or irritating the skin during the shaving operation.
By reinforcing the shearing element and supporting the same as described, it is possible to grind the surfaces of face 39 to a lesser thinness than has been heretofore attempted with devices of this kind; and by rendering it relatively easy to remove and replace the shearing element during the manufacture of the device and prior to its final assembly, it is possible to repeatedly grind the inner surface of said face, if necessary, until an accurate engagement of said surface with the teeth 25 of the cutter is obtained.
What is claimed is:
1. In a shaving device, a receptacle and shearing element having a tongue and groove connection for relative sliding engagement therebetween, and further having interlocking means thereon for releasably maintaining the shearing element in operative position on the receptacle, and a movable cutter supported within said receptacle for cooperation with said shearing element.
2. In a shaving device, a supporting member, a shearing element, a movable cutter cooperating therewith, and a spring secured to said supporting member and having a shouldered extremity projecting beyond a surface thereof with the shoulders of the spring forming a support for said cutter and exerting a yielding pressure thereon in the direction of said shearing element.
3. In a shaving device, a shearing element having a face and side walls both of which are slotted to form blades, the slots in said face extending inwardly from said side walls short of the medial longitudinal line of said face to form a central reinforcing strip therefor, a cutter cooperating with said shearing element, said cutter having opposed sets of teeth with an intervening groove aligned with said reinforcing strip, and further having portions spaced from and combining with the side walls of said shearing element to form longitudinal channels, a receptacle on which said shearing element is mounted and which partially encloses said cutter, a supporting member in said receptacle, and a spring carried by said supporting member and exerting pressure upon said cutter in the direction of said shearing element.
4. In a shaving device, a shearing element having a face and side Walls both of which are slotted to form blades, the slots in said face extending inwardly from said side walls short of the medial longitudinal line of said face to forma central reinforcing strip therefor, a cutter cooperating with said shearing element, said cutter having opposed sets of teeth with an .intervening groove aligned with said reinforcing strip, and further having portions spaced from and combining with the side Walls of said shearing element to form longitudinal channels, a receptacle having side Walls, cooperating means on the side walls of said shearing element and said receptacle for effecting relative longitudinal sliding movements therebetween, a member in said receptacle supporting said cutter and the side Walls of said receptacle, and a spring extending from said supporting member and engaging said cutter to yieldingly maintain the same in cooperative relation to said shearing element.
5. In a shaving device, a receptacle including a bottom and side walls, a supporting member having the sides engaging the Walls of said receptacle and further having end flanges of greater depth than the sides thereof for engagement with the ends of the receptacle bottom, a shearing element carried by said receptacle, and a cutter mounted on said supporting member for cooperation with said shearing element.
