Reference being had to the gures there will be seen a phonograph record resurfacing machine such as is commonly used to resurface 'phonograph records of the type' employed in dictating machines, comprising a base plate I having a left-hand upright standard 2,1an intermediate upright standard 3, right-hand upright standards 4 and 5, and an upright boss 6 directly to the right of the standard 5I APivoted to the boss 6 is an endgate 1.biased into open position by a torsional spring 8 but normally held in closedposition, as shown in Figure l, by an endgate bolt or latch9=pivoted as at I0 to the right end portion II of a` guide rail I 2 extending laterally along the front of the machine. Parallel to the shaft I5 and guide rail I2 is a longitudinal rod 2'supported by the left and rightv standards-2 and 5. Slidably and tiltably mounted .on the rod 20 is acarriage 2| having a-sleeve 22 embracingthe rod. As shown in Figure 2 the `'carriage is provided'with `an arm 23 curved forwardly over the -mandrel I1 and terminating in a shoe 23 which normally slidablyrests on the guide rail I2. The carriage is steadily moved or fed in a leftward direction across Vthe'mandrel (as from-a start position at the right end of the mandrel to a terminal position at the left end of the mandrel) by a laterally extending feed screw 24` rotatably supported by theleft and right standardsr 2 and 4. Secured to the carriage sleeve 22 by the pins 25 is `a resilient and rearwardly extending arm 26 carrying a feed nut 21 which normally envgages the underside of the feed screw. When with the feed nut 21 being in engagement with the feed 4.screw 24, a rotatinj'of the feed screw willcause a-slow' steady ymovement of the carriage. In order that such feeding of the carriage will occur coincidentally with a rotation of the mandrel the feed screw is provided with a pulley 30 which is coupled, as by a belt not shown, to a pulley 3| on the mandrel shaft I5. In theoperation of the machine the mandrel I1 and feed screw 24 are turned in a clockwise direction, the direction of thread on the feed screw being` such as to then cause a leftward feed of the carriage.
On the right side of the carriage there is an extension 32, square-shaped as viewed from the yend, which substantially overlies the rod 20.
The extension 32 carries a resurfacing tool 33 comprising a knife blade 34 mounted on a knife on the extension 32, guided by a guide rod 31,
and coupled to the knife bar 35 by a compression spring 38 coiled about the knife bar between the Vcap 36.and a shoulder 35 on the knife bar, this coupling serving toyieldably move ,the knife bar downwardly towardsthe record when the cap 36 is moved downwardly. The cap 36 is urged upwardly bya spring 39 coiled about the guide rod 31,'but upward movement of the cap 36 relative to ther bar 35 is limited by ahead 40 on the bar. By reason of theupward biasing of the cap 36 the knife bar isl normally maintained in inoperative position, this position being defined by the contact of a collar 4I on the bar 35 with the underside32 of theextension 32. The setting of the tool 33 is `controlled by a lever 42 pivotedv on thev right side of the extension 32 and having ya short arm 43 which is coupled to the cap 36 by Van angular link 44, the link being pivoted to the arm 42 by a-pin 45 and to the cap 36,by a pivot screw 46. As the lever is` swung forwardly inla counter-clockwise direction the cap 36 and knife bar 35 are moved downwardly, the tool being. moved into operative position relative to the record; in the terminal movement of the lever a lock 41, described in detail in the abovementionedBrown patent, is rendered operative to hold the tool in operative position, thereby setting the tool. Such forward or setting movement of the lever 42 is limited to the position shown -in Figure 2 by the impingement of the link 44 with the hub 42 of the lever. When the lever is in this most forward position the pin is slightly past dead center with respect to the pivot axes of the lever 42 and the pivot screw 46. The upward biasing force exerted on the cap 36 `then causes the lever 42 to be urged in a counterclockwise direction-the direction in which the lever 42 is moved to set the tool-but movement lof the lever in such direction is prevented by the contact of the link 44 with the hub 42. 'I'hus when the lever 42 reaches such limited position, the lever is releasably held there to maintain the tool in operative position. When the lever 42 is, however. tripped, or moved slightly in a clockwise direction, to return the pin 45 across the dead center line aforementioned, the lever 42 is `returned and the cap 36 is moved upwardly, as

The main switch 52 is preferably of the singlepole single-throw toggle variety adapted to snap into its cn and olf positionsand is mounted on the underside ofthe baseplate in the front right-hand portion thereof. This switch is con,- trolled' by a forwardly extending control lever 65 having a shaft 65' extending downwardly through a'boss 55m the base plate. Of the three actions aforementioned which may be selectively performed at the completion of a first or heavy cut on the record only the taking of a light or finishing-cut does not involve the release of the resurfacing. tool from its original setting. When a finishing cut is to be taken it is only'necessary to move the bracket 14 upwardly to render the finishing-cut controlling means operative, tilt the carriage upwardly and then manually return it to its start position. When this is done the machine is restarted by the closing of the switch 5|, the switch 52 having been left in on position. When the carriage is lowered upon the guide rail in its start position it will be next fed leftwardly across the record and the record will be rotated to effect the finishing-cut operation. However, if it is desired to take another first or heavy cut on the same record or to eject the record so that another may be mounted on the machine to be resurfaced, the resurfacing tool will in each case have to be released so that it may be later reset. It is also necessary that the switch 52 be thrown to off position so that the record will not be set in rotation when the carriage is returned from its terminal position for the purpose of placing the tool in a position overlying the record to permit the resetting of the tool. It is particularly important when there has been a change of record on the machine that both the tool be released to inoperative position from its prior setting and that the switch 52 be thrown to off position before the carriage is returned to reset the tool in order to avoid possible scraping of the tool on the record in the return of the carriage, such scraping being particularly likely to occur whenever the newly mounted record is of greater diameter than the preceding record. In accordance with my invention, when a first or heavy cut has been taken on the record the operator is compelled to throw the switch 52 to off position and to release the tool from operative position before he may make a change of record on the machine or return the carriage to permit a resetting of the tool, this compelling means being, however, arranged to permit the carriage to be returned for the taking of a nishing out on the record, as hereinafter explained.
The compelling means abovementioned may be in the form of means for locking vthe endgate in a mandrel-supporting position and of means for locking the carriage in a terminal position, the latter locking means being rendered inoperative by the movement of the finishing-cut controlling means to operative position so as to permit the taking of a finishing cut, but each of the locking means being rendered inoperative when the switch 52 is thrown to off position. In order that the tool will be released from operative position when each of the above locking means is rendered inoperative, a tool release is effected as an incident to the throwing of the switch 52 to off position. A means for so releasing the tool from operative position is disclosed in Heunlich Patent No. 2,095,332, issued October 12, 1937 and entitled Record shaving machines.
A tool-releasing means of the form abovementioned comprises a link 81 carrying a pin 88 in its forward end portion which engages a cam slot 88 provided in a rightwardly extending portion 89 of the plate 68, the link extending rearwardly along the right side of the machine beneath the base plate to pivotally connect with a right arm 90 of a lever 9| pivoted by a screw 92 to a boss 93 extending down from the base plate. A left arm 94 of the lever 9| is pivotally connected to the right end of a bar 95 which extends laterally of the machine along the rear edge of the opening 48 slightly within this opening. The bar 95 is supported at its left end by a link 96 pivoted by a pin 91 to the bar and by a screw 98 to a boss 99 extending down from the base plate, the link 96 and arm 94 forming a pair of parallel motion supports for the bar 95 to permit the bar to move forwardly and rearwardly in parallel movement.
On the right side of the carriage 2| there is pivotally supported, by a relatively long shoulder screw |00, a lever best shown in Figure 2.;
The lever |0| operatively connects the bar 95 with the tool-setting lever 42 and comprises a lower vertical portion |02 slidably contacting the front edge of the bar 95, a central semi-circular portion |03 curved about the carriage sleeve rearwardly thereof and pivoted at its upper end on the shoulder screw |00 adjacently of the right side of the carriage, a bail portion |04 extending along the screw |00, and a forwardly extending arm portion |05 pivoted on the outer end of the screw |00 and terminating at a point directlybelow the arm 43 of the tool-setting lever.
The cam slot 88 is arc-shaped and has at its rearward end an inwardly extending notch |06 in which the pin 88 is normally retained, as;
whenever the lever 65 is in a leftward position to place the switch 52 in on position, by a tension spring |01 which urges the link 81 leftwardly and forwardly. The link 81 extends forwardly and leftwardly from the pin 88 and ter-g minates in a cam face |08 adapted to impinge against the boss 66 when the control lever 65 is A moved rightwardly to place the switch 52 in off the tool from operative position. In the further.
movement of the control lever 65 to place the switch 52 into off position the cam face |08 impinges against the boss 66 to limit lthe leftward movement of the link 81, the pin 88 being then moved out of the notch |06. When the pin 88 is free of the notch |06 the link 81 is moved forwardly by the spring |01, with the pin 88 coming to rest in the forward end portion of the cam slot 88', the forward position of the link 81 being defined by the engagement of a lug 94 on the arm 94 with the rear edge of the bar 95.
In the leftward movement of the control lever 65 to place the switch 52 into on position, the pin 88 slides rearwardly relative to the cam slot 88' and comes to rest in the notch |08, the bar 95 remaining stationary. Thus it is seen that a throwing of the switch 52 from off to on position will not disturb a prior setting of the tool.
The means for locking the carriage in its terminal position comprises a vertically disposed latching member |09' at the left end of the guide rail I2 (see Figures 3 and 4). In a phonograph record resurfacing machine having a record-supporting mandrel: the combination of a movable endgate retainable n a mandrel-supporting position; means for locking said endgate in said mandrel-supporting position; a tool-carriage; driving means for feeding said tool-carriage along said mandrel into a terminal position; means for stopping said driving means and for rendering said endgate locking means effective by the movement of said tool-carriage into said terminal position; means for locking said tool-carriage in said terminal position; manipulatable control means operable to'start and stop saidfdriving means when said tool-carriage is out of said terminal position; and means, controlled by said manipulatable .control means, for rendering said tool-carriage Clocking means and endgate locking means inoperative.

12. In a phonograph record resurfacing machine having a record-supporting mandrel: the combination of an endgate movable into a mandrel-supporting position; a carriage movable along said mandrel into a terminal position; a
resurfacing tool on said carriage movable into n operative and inoperative positions relative to a record on said mandrel; means for locking said carriage in said terminal position; means for locking said endgate in said mandrel-supporting position; means movable into on and off positions to control the operation of the machine; and means, controlled by said control means, for concurrently moving said tool to inoperative position and rendering both said endgate locking means and carriage locking means each inoperative.
