The pair of horizontally disposed fingers are l spaced sufficiently to provide a socket for a spring 30 and washer 3I which together with a pin 32 serve to retain the ram in a raised inoperative position relative to the base II. lAssembly thereof is effected by merely sliding the ram upwardly or downwardly through suitable bearings 33 in the fingers 22 and 23 and passing the same through the center of the spring and washer while they are disposed in a socket 34, formed between the fingers 22 and 23, and then passing the pin 32 through a suitable cross-drilled hole in the ram 24 when the parts are susbtantially in the position shown in Fig. 2. The pin 32 may be an ordinary cotter pin.
The fingers 22 and 23 are preferably provided with caps 22 and 23' held in place by screws 35,
to provide the bearingsA 33` for the ram 24 so that wear may be compensated for, and to always insure 'a snug sliding t of the ram 24 in the block I1. If preferred, for economy and where the press is not to be put to hard use, the caps 22 and 23' may be made integral with the lingers 22 and 23, and the bearings 33 provided by merely drilling, broaching, or otherwise machining the bearings 33 for the ram 24.` A round ram may be provided; however, since it may be desirable to provide a tool in the socket 26 whichwill remain in a fixed lateral relationship to work or fixture on the base the ram is preferably in the form of a square rod fitting into square bearings, such as the ram 24 and bearings 33 shown.
Thus, it will be seen that the spring 30 and pin 32 serve to retain the'ram 24 in the block I1 for as the ram moves downwardly the pin compresses the spring. Passage of the ram upwardly *out of the lingers 22 and 23 is prevented by the pin engaging -the lower side of the finger 22 and passage downwardly and outwardly of the ram isprevented by the pin compressing the spring and washer toward the top of the lower finger 23.
'I'he block I1 also includes an integral support 38 for an operating lever '39 and preferably including a handle 40. This support 38 is preferably inthe form of a pair of forwardly projecting lingers 4I and 42 (see Figs. 1 and 2) with a socket 43 therebetween adapted to receive a fiat cam 44, preferably formed integral with the lever 39, with the cam pivotally mounted upon a stud 45 which passes through the forwardly projecting fingers 4I and v42 and is retained therein by pins 46. The cam 44 is proportioned and located to overlie a head 41 on the ram 24 and thereby to work directly upon the ram. The handle 40 may be formed integral with the lever 39 but is preferably made of wood or other materials softer thanl the metal lever and is suitablysecured on the lever 39 as by washers 48 and nut 49.
When the lever 39 is moved in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 2, the cam 44 engages the top 41 of the ram 24 thereby compressing the spring 30 and forcing the ram 24 toward the base II to cooperate with Work on the base. Movement of the ram 24 to the raised and inoperative position is eiected by merely moving the lever 39 into the raised position. The spring 30 andram 24 working upwardly against the cam 44 facilitates return oil the lever to the raised and inoperative position. A larger or smaller base II may be provided 2,184,356 tools, which may be held on the xture, as desired. It has been found in practice and use that the fixture remains on a bench in quite a satisfactory manner without the use of any fastening elements. However, when the fixture is intended to remain on a bench for 5 a long time it is preferable to secure it to the bench. For this purpose the present invention provides a threaded hole 54 at the underside of the base II to which any suitable fastening bolt passed through the bench 55 may be secured. As shown, this is accomplished by a headless bolt SI5v tightened into the threaded hole 54 and passed through a hole 51 in the bench where it is rigidly secured by a k'nob nut 58 as shown in Fig. 2.
The'block I1 may be made integral with the standard I3. However, the one hand press is adaptable for a wider range of Work through the provision of the various ram locations made possible with the loose or slidable block I 1, which may be locked in various positions relative to the base I I.
If preferred, projecting fingers 4I and 42 may, as shown in Fig. 3, be provided to extend sideways in the block I1', so that the lever 39 will extend toward' the side of the hand press rather than forwardly from the press. The only real point of difference in this structure over that form disclosed in Figs. 1 `and 2 is the provision of a single forwardly projecting iinger supporting the pair of fingers 4I and 42 which projects toward the side of a machine rather than toward the front as do the fingers 4I and 42.-
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of this invention and portions of the improvements may be used without others. 35
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In a hand press the combination of a onepiece main frame having a base; a bifurcated standard thereon; a block slidably mounted on the standard having a tongue projecting between the legs of the standard in guiding engagement; a pair of spaced bolts threaded into the block and engaging the opposite side of the standard for holding the block securely in any desired position on the standard; spaced lugs made integral with the upper portion of the block; a cam member journaled in said lugs; spaced apertured arms integral with the block below the lugs; and a ram reciprocally mounted in the arms in posi- 1 tion to be acted on by the cam member and itsl lower end being above said base; said tongue extending throughout the length ofthe block from above the cam member to below the lowerm'ost one of the arms.
2.
