The present invention relates to a holder which is adapted to provide for the interleaving of carbon automatically between the several continuous strips of forms in use simultaneously in the holder.

In prior devices of this character which are intended to be readily portable, the device is of such a form that the carbon sheets must be interleaved manually between the several forms of the sales slips before each sales record could be made. One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide for the automatic interleaving of the carbons between the forms of the sales slips, thereby eliminating any handling of the carbons, by the reset of the holder.

In certain prior devices, the carbon sheets have been automatically interleaved with sales slips, but in these devices the strips of forms were necessarily of a special character in which the several forms for each individual sales record are on separate strips of forms. The several strips are necessarily interfolded manually before being positioned in the holder, thereby increasing the cost of the forms to users. A further object of the invention is to provide for the interleaving of carbons with the usual types of sales slips in the form of a continuous strip zig-zag folded, thereby eliminating the necessity for the positioning of several record strips in interfolded relation.

Where a record copy is to be retained with the device, the present invention incorporates the provision of a storage compartment in which the record copies can be positioned after the sales record is entered thereon. An additional feature of the invention involves the provision of a double device for use where certain sales records are to be in duplicate and other sales records in triplicate, as for example, in recording both cash and charge sales.

It is also desirable that a device of this character shall be portable and capable of being carried on the person, and one of the objects of the p present invention is accordingly to provide a portable holder of such a size as to permit it to be carried in the pocket and to be held in the hand during use, at the same time providing a protection for the record form which is in a position for sales entries to be made thereon.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

As best shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the holder comprises a rectangular box I having a bottom wall 2, side walls 3 and i, Fig. 3, and end walls 5 and 6. A writing plate I, forming a cover for the casing, is hinged to the end wall 6 of the box by a pivot pin 8 extending along the upper end of said wall. The end of the cover plate l remote from the pin 8 is spaced a short distance from the upper edge of the end wall 5 to provide an elongated slot or opening 9, through which the salesbock strips or forms are drawn. Depending flanges it] on opposite side edges of the cover plate I engage with the side walls 3 and l on the inner sides thereof for holding the cover plate in proper position. The end of the cover plate adjacent the opening Q has a depending flange H re-bent upon itself to provide an arcuate surface over which the salesbook forms are slidable. Lugs ill support the writing plate 1 in proper position on the box.

The interior of the box is divided into a plurality of horizontal compartments l2. l3 and 14, each of which receives a continuous strip of sales forms zig-Zag folded to form a pack from which the forms are drawn in the form of strips. The compartments are separated from each other by plates i5 and I6 hinged on pins ll and i8, respectively, located adjacent to the end wall 5 and in parallel relation to the hinge pin 8, said pins being supported in lugs H and i8" on said end wall. The free ends of the plates i5 and i6 are supported, respectively, in spaced relation to each other by lugs l9 and 28 secured to the side walls 3 and 4. Obviously, the lugs H! are staggered with respect to the lugs 29 and the plate it has notches l9 in alinement with the lugs 59 to allow said plate to swing upwardly for loading the packs in the several compartments.

Adjacent to the hinged end of the cover plate l is located a transversely extending bar 2| pivotally mounted on a hinge pin 22 adjacent to one edge of the cover, the bar 2| being normally urged against said cover by a torsional spring 23. Adjacent opposite ends of the bar 2! are downwardly extending lugs 2d, in which the shaft 25 of a roller 26 is journaled. This roller engages the several sheets or strips from the individual packs as they are withdrawn from the holder and holds said sheets releasably against the upper surface of the cover plate I. The bar 2i is readily raised to permit removal of the salesbook strips from engagement therewith when desired. A bar 2?, similar to the bar 2!, and extending transversely of the cover plate I may be positioned adjacent to the opening 9 being supported on a hinge pin 28. The bar is urged toward the cover by a torsional spring 29 surrounding the pin 28, and the end of the bar remote from the pin 28 has a depending flange 30 which holds said bar in spaced relation to the cover plate to allow the strips from the individual packs to pass between said bar and the cover plate.

Adjacent to the bar .2? are positioned a plurality of carbon supporting arms 3! and 32 hinged on pins 33 and 36 respectively, at opposite edges of the cover plate. The arms 3| and 32 extend transversely of the cover and are normally urged toward said cover by torsional springs 35 and 35,

respectively. The carbon sheets 3'! carried by the arms are nearly as wide as the cover plate and equal in length substantially to the distance between said arms and the bar 2!. One end of each carbon sheet, as shown in Fig. 4, is wrapped around the carbon supporting arm and inserted through an elongated slot 33 extending longitudinally of the carbon supporting arm. The

i extreme end of the sheet is then positioned between said arm and the flat part of the carbon sheet and is held against sliding movement without any clamping arrangement for holding the sheets. The pivotal supports for the several carbon supporting arms are staggered vertically to a slight extent for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. Spare carbon sheets 3'! are carried on the inside of the cover plate and are held thereagainst, as by transversely extending arms 32. Each arm 39 is journaled on a hinge pin at, Fig. 3, and is held against the inside of the cover plate by a spring, not shown, similar to the springs 23 and 29. The several hinge pins for the transverse arms and bars above described are mounted in suitable lugs 4i integral with the cover plate 1. Where the sales slips are of less width than the holder, they are guided transversely of the cover plate during their movement thereover by depending guides 42, in the form of flanges integral with and projecting downwardly from flat rings 43 positioned around the arm 2? and slidable longitudinally thereof. Similar guides 44, Fig. 9, are carried by rings 45 slidable on the arm 2|, said guides being partially cut away to avoid interference between said guides and the roller 26. The strips of sales slips are also guided by a roller 44 extending beneath and parallel to the edge I I, being journaled in the depending flanges II]. A spring 4'5 may also urge the record strips from which the several forms may be drawn successively. It will be noted that the sales forms are so arranged that, as the forms are drawn from the packs within the holder, the successive forms will be properly positioned on the cover plate 7 for entry of the desired notations thereon.

The holder has a cover 49 pivoted thereon, being secured by hinges 58 to the end Wall 6 of the holder. The cover overlies the cover plate and corresponds substantially in length and width to the holder, having a downwardly extending peripheral flange 5i engaging over the upper edges of the walls of the holder. The cover has an inner wall 52 connected at opposite edges to the flange M to form a compartment 53. The compartment 52% is closed at the end adjacent to the hinges 50, and is open at the other end, the edge of the wall 52 being spaced from the end Wall of the cover. This compartment receives record slips and keeps them in order as they are positioned therein.

The cover also has a provision for supporting a record card, as is customarily provided in the usual device of this character, on which the several successive sales are recorded. To this end the underside of the lower wall 52 has a pocket 5& at each end thereof. These pockets,,Fig. 2, extend transversely of said cover and receive the opposite ends of a record card, the latter being flexible to permit its insertion in said pockets.

In use, individual packs of sales slips51, 58 and 59 of the character above described, and as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, are positioned respectively on the lower wall of the holder and on the plates l6 and H3. The ends of the strips of forms making up the individual packs of sales slips are led upwardly through the opening 9, with the strip from the uppermost pack of sales slips positioned beneath the carbon arm 32 and extending along the upper surface of the cover plate and beneath the arm 2 l, Where said strip is held by the roller 26. The end of the strip from the pack of sales slips 58 is positioned between the carbon arms 3i and 32 and extends beyond the roller 26, and the end of the stripfrom the pack of sales slips 5"! overlies both carbon arms and extends forwardly as does the strip from the pack of sales slips 58, all said strips being positioned beneath the roller 26. The strips from the pack of sales slips are all positioned beneath the arm 21' and are guided thereby, and the extreme ends of the strips are all in alinement between the roller 26 and the knife edge 26, which is located.

at the end of the writing plate 7 and substantially in the plane thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. Entries are made on the uppermost strip (from the pack of sales slips 5'6) and the carbon sheets 37 and 38 provide duplicates on the strips from the two other packs of sales slips positioned beneath said carbon sheets. When the entries are completed, the ends of the strip adjacent to the knife edge are grasped and all three strips are pulled longitudinally of the cover plate until the end of the form is in alinement with said knife edge. The three strips are then torn off and the succeeding forms on the strips are then in position for entries to be made thereon.

Where it is desirable in some cases to have one carbon copy of the sales record for certain transactions, and two carbon copies for other transactions, as where both cash and charge sales are made, a plurality of devices of the character above described may be secured together. As best shown in Fig. 10, a holder 60 of the construction above described and with the cover removed. is provided with outwardly projecting tongues 6! on one side wall thereof to receive a hinge pin 62, on which is journaled a second holder 63 having a depending flange 64 whose lower end engages the pin 62. The holder 53 is of a construction similar tothat of the holder 60, but has only a single dividing plate 55, so that the holder accommodates only two packs of sales slips. In an arrangement of this character, the cover 39 is secured to the end wall of the uppermost holder 63, and is swung out of the way when entries are made on said uppermost holder. When it is desirable to have three copies of the sales record, the holder 63 is turned about the pin 62 to uncover the upper surface of the cover plate i of the holder 60, the latter providing for the making of two carbon copies of the sales record.

It will thus be apparent that by this arrangement the person using the device can make two copies of the sales record when desired by using the holder 63, or three copies of the sales record with the holder 60, depending upon the type of record to be made. In this arrangement, each holder operates in the manner above described, with the leading ends of the forms from the individual packs of sales slips located on the cover plate I of the holder 60, and on the cover plate 1" of the hold-er B3.

In certain devices of this character it is desirable to retain a record copy, without the necessity for manual positioning of the record copy in a compartment as in the structure above disclosed. When this becomes necessary, the record strip may be stored by the structure disclosed in Fig. 11. Referring to this figure, the holder 64 consists of a box 65 having a cover or writing table 66 pivotally mounted on a pin 61 carried by the box. The table has a transverse slot 68 adjacent to the pivotal support, and the record strip 69 (corresponding to the strip from the pack of sales slips 59 above) is passed downwardly through the slot G8 to a roller ll] journaled on a pin ll extending transversely within the box 65. The end of the record strip is secured by any suitable means to the roller 10, and is wound upon said roller as the latter is rotated. For rotation of the roller 10, the end thereof carries a large-diameter disk 12. A roller 14 corresponding to the roller 26 above is also provided with a circular flange '15, whose periphery engages with the periphery of the disk 12, the circular flange 15 extending through a slot 73 in the cover for engagement with the disk 12. As the record strips 69, 65' and 69 are advanced over the surface of the table 66, the roller 14 which engages with the uppermost record strip 69" is rotated and procures a corresponding rotation of the roller 19 for winding the lowermost record strip 69 thereon. The roller H1 is preferably removable from within the box, as by the removal of the pin 1!, or by any other suitable mechanism.

Where stores use the charge-a-plate system, in which each charge customer has a small plate bearing his name and address and generally an identification number, the holder of the present invention is provided with a depression 16 in the cover or writing table 1. This depression is approximately the dimension of the identification plate, and locates said plate be-. neath the portion of the sales slips on which the address is usually written. "In use, the identification plate is positioned in the depression beneath the sales slips, and the usual well known stamping device is then operated for transferring the impressions on the plate to the several sales slips. i

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the holder provides for the automatic interleaving of carbons between a plurality of forms on which the sales entries are to be made, thereby entirely eliminating the manual handling of carbons except when replacement of used carbons is necessary. Moreover, by reason of the compartment in the cover, one copy of each sales slip may be retained with the sales holder, said copies being removed from the compartment when desired. The device can readily be made of a suitable size for carrying in the pocket, and is capable of use with the usual pack of sales slips made up of a single strip of forms folded to form the book.

I claim:

1. A holder for sales slips comprising a casing in which at least one pack of sales slips is positioned, a cover plate hing-ed to said casing at one end thereof, the edge of said cover plate being spaced from the casing at the end opposite to the hinge for providing a slot for access to the casing when the cover is closed, and a plurality of parallelly positioned plates hinged within the easing adjacent the same end as the hinge for the cover plate, said last mentioned plates defining compartments within the casing for holding the individual packs of sales slips.

2. A holder for sales slips comprising a casing in which at least one pack of zig-zag folded strips of sales slips is positioned, a writing plate forming a cover for said casing, one end of said cover plate being spaced from the adjacent end of the casing to define a slot at one end of said plate for access to the casing when the plate is in casingclosing position, and means on one part of the holder for locating an identification member in predetermined relation to the writing plate for transferring the characters on the member to a predetermined part of the sales slips located on the writing plate.

3. A holder for sales slips comprising a casing in which at least one pack of zig-zag folded sales slips is positioned, a writing plate forming a cover for said casing, one end of said cover plate being spaced from the adjacent end of the casing to define a slot at one end of the plate for access to the casing when said plate is in casing-closing position, the ends of the strips of sales slips from the pack being drawn from the casing through the slot and over the plate, a pivoted cover for the holder overlying said plate and the strips thereon, one part of the holder having means for locating an identification plate in a prede-' termined position for transferring the information on the plate to the sales slip on the Writing plate by a predetermined part of the slip.

4. A holder for sales slips comprising a casing in which at least one pack of zig-zag folded sales slips arranged in a continuous strip is positioned, a writing plate forming a cover for said casing, one end of said plate being spaced from the adjacent end of the casing to define a slot at one end of the plate through which the ends of the strip of sales slips may be drawn from the casing, said plate having means for locating an identification member in predetermined relation thereon, said locating means positioning the member beneath the sales strips which overlie the writing plate with said member in predetermined relation to the strips.

5. A holder for sales slips comprising a casing in which at least one pack of zig-zag folded sales slips arranged in a continuous strip is positioned, a writing plate forming a cover for said casing, one end of said plate being spaced from the adjacent end of the casing to define a slot at one end of the plate through which the ends of the strip of sales slips may be drawn from the casing, said plate having means for locating an identification member in predetermined relation thereon, said locating means positioning the member beneath the sales strips which overlie the writing plate with said member in predetermined relation to the strips, and carbon sheets to provide for reproducing on the sales slips overlying the plate the information on the identification member when the latter is properly located by the locating means.

A holder for zig-zag folded strips of sales slips comprising a casing in which at least one pack of the strips is positioned, a cover plate for said casing, one end of said plate being spaced from the adjacent end of the casing to define a slot at one end of the plate through which the ends of the sales slips from the pack are directed, means in the form of arms carried by the cover plate for supporting a carbon sheet above the cover plate and arranged to permit the ends of the strips from the pack within the casing to be positioned on opposite sides of the carbon sheet, a transversely extending arm on said cover plate for guiding the strips of sales slips and at least one depending guide transversely adjustable on said arm for laterally guiding the sales slips.
