Description

Dec. 5, 1939. E. BRASS 2,182,112
WOOD CASE AND FASTENER FOR THE COVERS THEREOF Filed July 8, 1938 F/i/i/i/iii iNvENTOR Patented Dec. 5, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WOOD CASE AND FASTENER FOR THE.
COVERS THEREOF 1 Claim.
This invention relates to wood cases, such as egg cases, and fasteners for the covers thereof.
An object of this invention is to provide a case of the character described, provided with improved fasteners for the cover or lid of the case, fixed to the ends of the case and forming parallel guide grooves at the ends of the case to receive the ends of a cover which may be slid into covering position on the case, the fasteners having end tabs serving as stops for the cover as the latter is slid into place, and being provided with crimped or corrugated edges which may be hammered or pressed down on the cover to grip the cover and retain the same from accidentally coming out.
Another object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable fastener for the cover of a wood box such as an egg case, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, easy to apply to a box, and which shall yet be practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a case embodying the invention and provided with the improved fasteners for the cover;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a partial top plan view of the case;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 44 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a partial, perspective view of one of the improved fasteners.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l0 designates a case embodying the invention, here shown for the purpose of illustration, in the form of a wood egg case. The case has a bottom wall, end walls, and front and rear walls. Attached to the upper ends of said end walls are wood slats or strips ll. Fixed to each of said slats II is one of the improved fasteners I2. Each fastener I2 is preferably made of sheet metal and comprises a vertical wall 13 formed with a plurality of openings M to receive nails I5 for attaching the fastener to the case. Extending from the upper end of wall I3 is an inwardly extending wall it, slanting downwardly somewhat. Wall 16 is narrower than vertical wall l3. The edge of wall it is corrugated or crimped as at I! for the purpose hereinafter appearing, forming a series of parallel ridges Ha inclined to wall l3. spaced above the upper edge of slat H and above the front, rear and end walls to form a guide groove therewith. At one end of wall I6 is a downwardly turned tab 20 for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
The cover 22 for case H] has a pair of flat slats 23 at the ends thereof which may be received within the grooves formed between flanges l6 and the case. The tabs 20 serve as stops for the cover when sliding the latter into closing position. After the cover has been slid into place, the flanges 16 may be struck down with a hammer or mallet so that the corrugated or crimped edges dig into the slats 23 to hold the cover from slipping out.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In combination, a case having end walls, a pair of fastener members made of sheet metal and having vertical walls fixed to the upper portions of said end walls and flanges extending inwardly from said vertical walls and spaced above said end walls, a cover for said case having the ends thereof slidably received beneath said flanges, and a tab at the end of each member and structurally integral therewith engaging an edge of said cover and serving as a stop for the cover, the edge of the flange of each member being corrugated, said corrugations forming spaced parallel ridges inclined to the vertical wall of said member, said flanges being inclined downwardly from said vertical walls, said corrugated edge adapted to be driven into said cover.
EHME BRASS.
