Application, January 9, 1939, sein No. %9 920 Our invention relates .to a plasterer'siinishing trowel for nishing bullnose corners at the sides of the frames of doors and windows in buildings or other bullnose corners and the objects of ;our
invention are:
First, to provide a trowel that. is particularly `shaped and a handie so vides an efficient trowel for ,finishing bullnose corners around the frames of doors and windows in buildings or likebullnose corners;
Second, to provide ,a :trowel of this class that is so shaped and curved that it properly forms and finishes the bullnose corner, thus providinga bullnose corner of this class that is substantially perfect in shape and form; v Third, to provide a finishing trowel of this class which is so bullnose corner is that it is uniform its full length; v
Fourth, to pro-vide a plasterer's bullnose finish- 'ing trowel of this class which is operated longitudinally along the corner without side shifting for providing the proper form and shape of y a bullnose corner for around the frameiof the doors, windows or the like;
Fifth, to provide a trowel of this class which is so shaped and formed that there isa substantially straight portion along one side only which blends with the straight portion of the walls adjacent the bullnose corner;
Sixth, to provide a plasterer's finishing trowel of this class in which the handle is so positioned relatively to the trowel that pressure is brought to bear at the proper portion of the trowel blade to provide a maximum of perfection in the finished bullnose corner; and
Seventh, to provide a trowel: of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to operate, eicient in its action and which will not readily deteriorate or getout of order.
With these and other objeots in View as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set orth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference ther'eon which form a part of this applicationin which:
' Figure 1 is a top or plan View of our plasterer's bullnose finishing trowel shown positioned on a fragmentary portion of a bullnose corner around a window frame; Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of the trowel alone taken from the arran'ged that it 'proshaped and formed that the e finished` without variations so line 2--2 of Fig., 1' and 3 is a transverse sectional view of the trowel alone taken from the line 3- -3 of Fig. 2, e
Similar characters of reference .refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing:
The bullnose corner, which is :the conventional new constructionfor corners, particularly takes the place of the frame of doors and windows in buildings where the wood frame is eliminated at ;the outer side and reduced in size and the finish is a plaster bullnose corner as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawing in section by dash lines. The bullnose portion extends from the point i to 'thepoint `2 in Fig. 1 of the drawing, while the surface 3 is the wall space which is straight and is the finished walls with plaster finish, so that the portion Za blends in with the portion 3 under a straight portion of one side edge of the trowel. The portion 4 indicates the door or window frame portion and the portion da the door or window therein, all shown by dash lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The trowel blade 5 `is so shaped in cross section that it is straight ,at 50, for nearly onehalf the width of the blade, then it is formed in a curve-at 5b which 'extends to the edge 5c. The distance from the point 5c to the straight portion 5a. is the thickness of the lath and plaster of the wall-sometimes .three-quarters of an inch and sometimes less, and the curve of this trowel is made to, fit the different wall thicknesses outside of the wall studding. This blade 5 is shaped as 'shown best in cross section in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing and is made of steel and is from 11 to 12 inches in length to provide long bearing surface on the corner and it is straight longitudinally as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing. `Secured to this blade 5 right on' the curve 51). and positioned so that the proper pressure will be produced for properly forming the curve bullnose corner 6 is a handle i member 'I which is substantially U shaped as shown best in Fig. 2 of' the drawing and it Secured to the blade 5 by means of two screws positioned side by 'side at each end Ta, and lb,
The operation of our trowel is substantially as follows: The proper trowel blade is selected for the proper thickness of wall and the finishing coat is placed on the corner with the trowel and the trowel blade is moved longitudinally only along the bullnose corner with the proper the scope of our invention, the construction,`
combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a plasterer's bullnose finishing 'trowel of the class described, the eombination of a trowel blade including a relatively long longitudinally straight blade member provided with a relatively wide portion that is transversely straight in cross section and asubstantially similar" width portion that is curvedincross section, and a handle member secured longitudinaliy of said blade with its middle in alignment with the radius of the arc of the curved portion.
2. In a plasterefs bullnose finishing trowel of the class described, the combination of a trowel blade including a relatively long longitudinally straight blade member provided with a relatively wide portion that is transversely straight in cross section and a substantially similar width portion that is curved in cross section, a. handle member secured longitudinally of said blade with its middle in alignment with the radius of the arc of the curved portion, said handle being provided with curved portions adapted to conform to and fit the outer curved surface of said blade.
3. In a, plasterer s bullnose finishing trowel of the class described, the combination of a relatively long longitudinaily straight trowel blade provided with a curved portion in cross section at one side and a handle Secured longitudinally along said blade at the outer side of the curved portion in substantal alignment with the radius of said curve of said blade.
4. In a plasterer's bullnose finishing trowel of the class described, the combination of a relatively long longitudinally straight trowel blade provided with a curved portion in cross section at one side and a handle Secured longitudinally along said blade at the outer side of the curved portion in substantial alignment with i the radius of said curve of said blade, said blade provided with a transversely straight portion at one side intersecting the one side of the curved portion.
