Description

Patented Nov. 28, 1939.
UNITED STATESV `muri-:rrr oFFicB PUMPING APPARATUS Alexander-D. Ferguson, Michigan Oity, Ind., as-
signor to Sullivan Machinery Compmy, a cor-v poration of Massachusetts A Application December 31, 19,35, Serial (Cl. 23o-58) 6 Claims.l
My invention relates to pumping apparatus,
and more particularly to improved driving- .means for pumping apparatus.
-For the purpose of conservingspace, it is desirableto mount the driving motor for pumping apparatus in a position in which a minimum of floor space-will be required, and for this purpose superposingthe driving motor with respect to l adjustment of the driving element of the motor relative to the driven element of the pumping device, so as to obtain the most effective driving relation. A further object of my `invention is to provide an improved motor support. Other objects and advantages of my invention'will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing, lin which one emobdiment which my invention may assume in practice has been shown for purposes of illustration,
Fig. l is a side elevation of a pumping appa-v ratus in which the invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the plane of the section line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section on a -plane corresponding to the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, it will be observed that a pumping apparatus I, herein shown as an air compressor, is provided with a suitable base and crank case 2,-and cylinder 3, the latter being supported by the combined base and vcrank case. The compressor has a combined flywheel and driving pulley 4 mounted upon its crank shaft 5. The crank case and base 2 is provided with a projecting portion 6 providing a flange and the cylinder proper 8' and cylinder head 9 are adapted to be held to the angel by appropriate which is held in adjusted position by a lock nut I8. Adjustment of the platform I6 is provided for by its pivotal mounting at I9 on an improved support member 2|), which is herein in the form of an annulus 2| having upstanding lugs orbrackets 22 thereon terminating in eyes 23 through which the pivot rod 26 passes, the pivot rod 24 also passing through depending brackets 25 on the base I6. It will be observed that the annular portion 2l is traversed by a series of holes 26 formed to permit the passage there? through of the threaded holding elements I0, and that the member 20 is clamped by the holding elements I between the collar 1 on the'base and' crank case 2 and the cylinder head 9, the parts being rigidly connected together and all held in assembled relation by the common .holding means including the threaded members I0 and the nuts,
II. It will be evident that this device provides for an extremely compact construction; .that a minimum departure from standard pumpingapparatus construction is necessary; that aditional holding elements are not required; and that the overall dimension of the machine is increased but slightly with the apparatus shown, and with a Wider pumping apparatus would not be increased any more than by the thickness of the member 20. It will be observed that by the adjusting means I'I, I8'and the pivotal support I6, the most advantageous belt tension may be secured; and
it will furtherbe appreciated that the entire d evice is of the utmost simplicity of construction.
W'hile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form is shown for purposes of illustration and that the Y invention may be modified and embodied in var'- ious other'forms without departing from its `spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a pumping device including y a base, a cylinder member, a cylinder head member, devices for clamping the same together, and a driving pulley, and 'driving means for said pumping device including a driving motor having a mounting including a member held by said clamping devices, a platform pivotally connected to said last mentionedI member, and means for Yadjusting said platform to change the relation of said motor to said driving pulley.y
able support interposed between said frame and said cylinder, and means for pivotally mounting said motor on said support in a position overlying said pump.
3. In combination, a pumpingv device including a base, a cylinder member, a cylinder head member, devices Ior clamping the same together, and a driving pulley, a driving motor operatively connected with said driving pulley, and motor supporting means including a, member held by said clamping devices. l
4. In combination, a pumping device including a base member, a cylinder member, and a driving element, a driving motor operatively connected to drive said driving element, and motor' supporting means including an element clamped bejtween the cylinder and base members and an element supported in part by saidl clamped element and in part by one of said members only.
5. In combination, a pumping device including a pump cylinder, a, piston within said cylinder anda. pump cylinder head, said piston having a piston vrod reciprocable through said head, and means for clamping said cylinder and cylinder head together, a driving motor for said pumping device, and a supporting' device for said motor positioned by said clamping rreans.
6. In combination, a pumping vdevice including a pump cylinder, a piston reciprocable within said cylinder and a. pump cylinder head, said piston having a reciprocable actuating connection extending through said head, and means for clamping said cylinder and cylinder head together, a driving motor for said pumping device, and a supporting device for said motor positioned by said clamping means and surrounding said reciprocable actuating connection.
