Description

ABDOMINAL EXERCI SER Filed Jan. 14, 1938 Patented Nov. 14, 1939 UNITED STATES ABDOMINAL EXERCISER Yonai Uchiumi, Kanda-ku, Tokyo-shi, Japan Application January 14, 1938, Serial No. 185,076
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an apparatus for the exercise of the abdomen.
The main features of the invention are a flexible clapper and a guide piece for the head of said clapper within the apparatus, said clapper springing off the guide piece and ringing a bell intermittently when the abdomen compresses the apparatus during the performance of abdominal (diaphragmal) breathing exercises.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus allowing proper regulation of breathing exercises and practice of normal and regular breathing;
A further object is the correction of irregularities of breathing;
And still another object of the invention is an apparatus facilitating exercises strengthening the abdomen by its regular expansion and contraction, and thereby improving the circulation of blood.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of the apparatus, and
Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the apparatus, a part being out 01f in order to show the inside of the apparatus.
The apparatus consists of a frame which is curved in such a way as to leave appropriate space between the outer plate I and the inner plate 2 of the frame. On the inside of the outer plate there is provided a bell body 3 and a guiding leaf spring 4. On the inner plate 2 there is provided a clapper consisting of a leaf spring stem 5 and a head 6.
The apparatus, is fastened to the lower part of the abdomen by a belt or similar device. When breathing exercises are performed the outer and of abdominal pressure the inner plate 2 is curved again, the guiding spring 4 again engages the clapper head 6, until the latter is released as above-described. This enables the user to perceive easily the tact of his breathing, and causes him to repeat his breathing exercises properly regulated. The object of using this apparatus is thus to strengthen the pressure in the abdomen, to make the circulation of blood vigorous and, consequently, to improve the general health of the body, by giving the abdomen normal and regular movements of expansion and contraction.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, 1 declare that what I claim is:
An abdominal exerciser, comprising a flexible, elastic frame of predetermined length and adapted to be attached to the body of the user, said frame being curved so as to leave a space between the outer and the inner part of said frame, a bell within the outer side of said frame, a flexible clapper on the inner part of said frame, said clapper and said inner part of said frame being directly actuated by the movements of the diaphragm of the user and a guiding spring within the outer part of said frame for the alternate retention and release of said clapper.
