PETERS, FHOTO-LIYHOGRAPMHL WASHINGTON D, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. MAYALI), OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND BENJN. F. GOOKE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ELASTIC STATE-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,799, dated October 12, 1858.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J; MAYALL, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Elastic Stair-Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan of a portion of a step, with the elastic pad attached and the carpet over it. I ig. 2 is a transverse section through the step, pad and carpet.
I am aware that it has long been customary to place cotton, straw or other articles between the carpet and the floors of rooms, or the steps of stair ways, for the purpose of protecting the carpet from the wear which would result from its immediate contact with the wood, and also to deaden the sound of the tread of persons walking over the floor, or going up and down the stairs; but such articles have not had the permanent elasticity which is desirable.
The object of my present invent-ion is to furnish an elastic pad of a convenient form, to be applied to the steps of stair-ways, and of a material which while it is cheap and durable, will maintain its elasticity.
That others skilled in the art may understand and use my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.
The composition which I employ in making my elastic stair pad is the following: 1 lb. of india rubber, a lb. of pulverized alum, lb. of white lead, 2 ozs. of sulfur.
These ingredients after being properly mixed are subjected to heat in a mold which gives to the article produced, the required form.
In the drawings A, is the step, B the elastic pad, C the carpet; it will be perceived that the edge of the pad at a is so formed as to bend over and clasp the front edge of the step, while the other edge I) or that toward the back part of the step gradually ta ers elf thin, leaving the part on which the foot more directly rests in ascending the stairs, somewhat thicker; this gives the required degree of elasticity, while the part turned over the front edge of the step protects the carpet from contact with the wood at the place where it is soonest worn or cut out.
These pads will be particularly advantageous on the stairs of churches, lecture rooms &c. where the noise of persons ascending is liable to disturb those who have already assembled.
The same material when formed into sheets will answer admirably for a. padding between the carpet and floor of a room or hall.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture is-- The above described elastic stair pad of the composition and form substantially as set forth.
THOS. J. MAYALL.
