A TTORNEY Patented Nov. 7, 1939 UNlTl-ID STATES PATENT oer-"ice I TOOTH BRU SH l sz szb lslNG PACKAGE Joseph D. Peters, Bridgeport, Conn.
Application April 7, 1937, Serial No. 135,448
2 Claims.
an inexpensive and disposable tooth brush de-,
signed to be effective for but a short time whereby it is to be used but once and then discarded.
Another object is to provide a container particularly designed for use in the package mentioned.
A further object is to provide a disposable tooth brush particularly designed for use in the Package specified.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but includes all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the tooth brush of the invention;
Fig. 2 shows the pattern or blank of the container;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the package partly open;
Fig. 4 is an end view of the package;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially along the plane of the line 55 of Fig. 3; and,
Fig. 6 is an edge view of the package with the container entirely closed and with parts broken away Referring in detail to the drawing the tooth brush of the invention is generally designated I0 and includes an elongated handle II carrying bristles I2 toward one end thereof and formed of paper or paper pulp or other material soluble in water. For the purpose of the invention it is not necessary that the handle II be absolutely soluble but it must be of such material as to gradually soften in water. According to the invention the brush is particularly for use by persons away from their homes and without their usual facilities for the brushing of their teeth.
It is desired that the present brush together with a small supply of powder or paste besold for a small sum and the brush handle is of such material that during one .use of the brush in a tooth cleaning operation, the handle becomes soft the flaps I8 and I9 and the side wall It.
package.
so as to be unfit for further or a second use although it is not desired that the handle completely dissolve during one cleaning of the teeth. Thus while the handle is referred to as soluble in'water it is to be understood that it is not instantly soluble.
Fig. 2 shows the blank from which the container of the present package is formed. Such blank includes side wall portions I3 and It, edge portions I5, I6 and Il, at one end flaps I 8 and I9 with an end closure 20 and at its other end flaps Zl and 22 together with an extension 23 formed with the side wall portion I3. On the free edge of the closure 20 is a securing flap 2d.
The extension 23 is adapted to be bent into a U-shape by folding on the lines 25, 2t and 2'5 wherebyits portions 28 and 29 form the side arms of the U. while its portion 30 comprises the connecting portion thereof. On the outer end of the extension portion 29 is an enlarged portion 35 corresponding with the closure 20 and comprising the closure for the opposite end of the container. Closure 3i carries a draw or pull tab 32 the purpose of. which will be set forth.
When forming the container the blank of Fig. 2 is folded to bring the sides I3 and I6 opposite one another and the edges I5 and I6 opposite one another. another as do the flaps 2| and 22. The closure 29 extends across the flaps I8 and I91 and the flap or tab 24 is tucked in between the edges of Edge piece Il may be inserted into place at the inner side of the piece I5 or at the outer side thereof as desired but preferably before that is done the extension 23 is folded into the body of the con-- tainer. Such extension when in place takes a U-shape with its portions 28 and 29 lying at. the inner sides of the side walls I3 and I4 respectively and with its connecting portion 30 extending transversely of thecontainer. I
It is noted that the extension 23 is not of the width of wall I3 and so when the extension is in place there is a space between the connecting portion 30 of the extension and the edge wall I5 of the container. After the extension is in place the, tooth brush I0 is inserted into the container with its handle I I extending under the lower edge of the portion 30 of the extension as in Fig. 3.' The brush is so disposed that its bristles extend upwardly at the forward side of said portion 30.
Thereafter a container 33 of any desired type, and holding a small quantity of tooth powder or paste is placed in the main container of the The tooth cleaner is within the'folded Flaps I8 and I9 extend toward one extension together with the bristles of the brush and may rest on such bristles or otherwise as desired.
Flap l'l may now be glued or otherwise secured to the edge wall IS. The side wall l3 adjacent its end carrying the extension 23 is slotted to provide a thin strap 34 and when the brush and cleaner are in the container the closure 3! may be folded along the line 35 to dispose the closure across the flaps 2| and 22 and then the draw tab 32 is passed under the strap 34 closing the package.
' When a purchaser is to use the brush and cleaner he merely releases the tab 32 from the strap 36 and pulling outwardly on said tab causes the folded extension 23 to move out through the end of the container bringing the enclosed cleaner and the brush with it. The contents will thus be drawn from the main container due to the fact that such contents are within the fold of extension 23 and the connecting portion 30 of the latter will engage the container 33 and the bristles of the brush and move such container 33 and the brush outwardly through the open end of the main container.
There is only sufficient of the cleaner to serve for one brushing of the teeth and as above explained the brush I0 is designed to have but a short life. The package of the invention may in part at least be used as an advertising medium since the cleaner may be in sample size of any well known brand.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a package of the class described, an elon gated container, a tooth brush having bristles on one end portion, said brush located in and with its back against an edge wall of the container whereby the bristles of the brush project toward the longitudinal center of the container and are located immediately inwardly of one end thereof, an extension on said end of one side -wall of the container and folded into the container-against said side wall thereof and extending only along the bristle carrying portion of the brush and then across the container over the brush handle immediately in the rear of the brush bristles and then out through said end of the container whereby on the end of said extension being pulled to draw the extension out of the container the brush bristles are engaged by the extension and the brush is drawn outwardly of the container.
2. In a package of the class described, a container comprising an elongated hollow body including opposite walls and a discharge end, an extension on one of said walls at the discharge end thereof and folded back into the container in substantially U-shape whereby its arms extend along the inner surfaces of said side walls while its inner connecting portion extends across the container intermediate the ends thereof, said connecting portion of said extension of less than the width of said walls whereby there is a space at one free edge of such portion for the insertion of the shank of a headed article under such edge into the body with the head of said article at the discharge side of such portion, anda draw tab at the free end of said extension.
